What: Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling Columbia Valley 2015 $9

Where: Most grocery stores

Why: Riesling is consistently Washington’s first or second most produced white wine grape variety and has been produced in the state for decades. As a grape variety, riesling is known for its versatility, making everything from bone dry to dessert sweet wines. It’s also known for its high acidity, something that makes it ever popular with the sommelier set.

Chateau Ste. Michelle dominates the riesling scene in Washington. In fact, Ste Michelle is the world’s largest producer of riesling, making nearly 1 million cases of their off-dry Columbia Valley Riesling alone.

Most of the offerings from Ste. Michelle and others in Washington fall into the off dry category. An exception well worth seeking out is the Chateau Ste. Michelle Dry Riesling Columbia Valley 2015 ($9). This wine offers vibrant aromas of honeysuckle, peach, and pear. The palate is flavorful but well balanced, with racy acidity holding it all together. Along with its off-dry and medium sweet siblings (Columbia Valley Riesling and Harvest Select Riesling), this wine is consistently the best value out there on the shelves for Washington wine. Try pairing it with crab, scallops or perhaps even a spicy curry.
