What: Soos Creek Sundance Red Wine Columbia Valley 2013 $20
Where: DeLaurenti, Whole Foods (Interbay, Roosevelt, University Place)
Why: One of the joys of living in Washington right now is having access to small production, high quality wines that are made right here in the state and that other parts of the nation most likely won’t see. Of Washington’s 900+ wineries, the vast majority are small, family wineries making fewer than 5,000 cases of wine annually. This means production of any individual wine is often limited to a few hundred cases, limiting how far the wine gets outside the state.
Soos Creek Wine Cellars is a perfect example of the best that Washington has to offer—small lot, high quality wines that are exceptionally well priced. The winery’s whole lineup is worthy of exploration but one of the current releases that is not to be missed is the Soos Creek Sundance Red Wine Columbia Valley 2013 ($20). Merlot makes up half of the wine with the rest cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. It offers aromas of baking spice, herb and dark cherry that lead to luscious, ripe raspberry and blackberry flavors. It’s completely irresistible at a price that can’t be beat. Drink up!
