Hike

Find trail maps and up-to-date conditions at national park visitor centers, state park interpretive centers, Forest Service ranger stations, and any kind of Wilderness Information Center. Before leaving town, try REI’s Ranger Station counter, which also sells parking passes.

Games

Rediscover what a deck of cards can do, or embrace specialty decks like Uno or Cards Against Humanity.

Wander

If attacking the trail is overwhelming, try strolling through the woods around camp; you might learn more in 100 yards of off-trail bushwhacking than a dozen miles up a mountain.

Fish

Check regulations at a local bait shop before baiting the hook; state licenses are not required in the Rainier and Olympic national parks, for example, but there are limits on allowed rivers and species.

Bullshit

Ghost stories. Fish yarns. Bigfoot sightings. The outdoors were made for tall tales.
