What: Substance Cabernet Sauvignon Washington 2013 $15

Where: Sixth Avenue Wine Sellers, Esquin Wine and Spirits, McCarthy and Schiering, PCC Natural Markets

Why: 2013 was the beginning of three increasingly warm vintages for Washington, and, based on the wines released thus far, it looks to be a banner vintage for the value tier in general and for cabernet sauvignon in particular.

Known for its firm tannins and terrific aging potential, cabernet sauvignon has long been called the ‘King of Grapes.’ Here in Washington, Cabernet is increasingly becoming a calling card for the state. Plantings are surging, and it is already by far the state’s most planted grape variety, though chardonnay and riesling often produce more tonnage. Washington cabernet is known for its dark fruit notes and dried herb aromas and flavors, with ample tannins and acidity.

The 2013 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon Washington ($15) is an outstanding example of the variety. The aromas and flavors show the warmth of the vintage, with generous blackberry and black currant notes, along with cabernet’s signature herbal accents. It’s a serious crowd pleaser at a hard to beat price. Drink up!
