What: Maison Bleue Lisette Rosé of Grenache Columbia Valley 2014 $20

Why: In Washington, winemakers can (and do) make rosé from just about every grape imaginable, though some varieties–such as Rhone grapes–are more successful than others, such as most Bordeaux varieties with the exception of cabernet franc. 

Few winemakers in the state are experimenting with grenache for rosé. One on the vanguard is Jon Meuret of Maison Bleue in Walla Walla. Meuret took a year hiatus from making rosé before returning it to the winery’s lineup by popular demand. Whereas previous releases focused on mourvèdre, his 2014 wine is grenache from famed Boushey Vineyard in the Yakima Valley. 

“Grenache as a rosé is even more approachable when it’s young,” Meuret explained. The 2014 Maison Bleue Lisette Rosé of Grenache Columbia Valley ($20) is certainly that. It’s a pretty pale salmon color with appealing aromas of strawberry and wet stone. The flavors are dry with a fresh, textured feel. It’s easily one of the season’s best, available in limited quantities around Seattle, but a visit to the Walla Walla tasting room is your best bet. Drink up!
