Ethan Stowell Takes Over the Four Seasons
The restaurateur whose acclaim began at First and Union is making his way back downtown
, opening a restaurant in the former home of Art Restaurant and Lounge in the Four Seasons. No name yet (sensing a trend here?) but  there will be a raw bar and an overall focus on Northwest ingredients. He’s even bringing Joe Ritchie, chef at Stowell’s Mkt. to oversee the kitchen. Look for it mid-May. 

Marination’s Columbia City Expansion
Owners Kamala Saxton and Roz Edison are expanding to Columbia City
, revamping a 1947 auto garage into a boozy, community-oriented restaurant expected to open this fall. It won’t technically be a Marination, but there will be some familiar favorites from the truck on the menu. This yet-unnamed breakfast-lunch-and-dinner (and weekend brunch!) destination will have a significant cocktail selection and a properly aloha-fied Asian-Hawaiian inspired menu. A massive parking lot alongside the building is destined to become a beer garden.

OPENINGS

Gnocchi Bar
The brick-and-mortar version of Lisa Nakamura’s popular pop-up officially opened for dinner service on Monday.  Nakamura transformed the 12th Avenue space from a gelato shop into a gelato shop-slash-gnocchi bar, where she serves her own pillowy gnocchi, soups, and salads. Gnocchi Bar opens at 5pm seven days a week.

Number 6 Cider
Former biotech specialist Tom Todaro’s Interbay cider operation is set to open today, March 27. Rotating varieties of Number 6 cider (classic apple, juniper, smoked jalapeno...) are available on tap in the pub alongside a charcuterie-centric menu. Todaro’s ciders are also available at other Seattle bars and a handful of grocery stores.

Vivace Roastery
After years of roasting in a warehouse on 11th Ave, Capitol Hill coffee stalwart Espresso Vivace is planning a new underground roastery in the basement of the Garage pool hall on Broadway, reports Capitol Hill Seattle. The new space, which should be operational by this winter, will have cooler temperatures for bean storage and additional room for employee training, at a lower cost to owner David Schomer. The construction project is expected to cost at least $550,000 (peanuts compared to the $30 million Starbucks dropped on its Pike Street roastery).

Oooh. The Seattle Times's Thursday food news compendium includes word of a new and independently owned dim sum parlor on Beacon Hill. 

SHIFT CHANGE

Adam Fortuna Departs Artusi, Spinasse
Another changeup here. Adam Fortuna reports he will be departing Artusi and Spinasse after dinner service on Friday in favor of a new gig at Stateside. Esteemed local barman Connor O'Brien will step in at Artusi starting April 7.

Murray Stenson at E. Smith Mercantile
Whenever this guy moves, it makes the news. Though he’s still reportedly looking to open his own place, Stenson will be slinging drinks at E. Smith Mercantile in Pioneer Square on Sundays and Mondays—days on which the bar used to be closed—until further notice.  Wisely, the bar will be accepting reservations while Stenson’s at the helm.

Seattle Chefs Nominated for James Beard Awards
It was a weird year for Northwest chefs
on this year’s James Beard honoree list, with none represented in any of the national categories. That said, Blaine Wetzel, Renee Erickson, and Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi all made the Best Chef: Northwest list, and journalism honorees included the folks at ChefSteps, Molly Wizenberg’s Orangette, and our own Allecia Vermillion in the beverage writing category. Cheers to all!
