Last week we recommended white wines to pair with Thanksgiving dinner. This week, we turn our attention to reds. As before, we’ll focus on fairly widely available wines that are well priced. 

In terms of red wines for Thanksgiving, leave the big reds (think cabernet sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends) until after dinner. Wines that have a lot of oak on them will most likely clash with some of the more acid driven dishes on the table (I’m looking at you cranberry relish) or run over the subtleties of the turkey you slaved all day over. 

Instead, go with wines that are traditionally fairly lightly oaked, such as Rhone-style blends or syrah. In terms of the former, you can’t do better for the money than the 2013 Syncline Winery Subduction Red Red Wine Columbia Valley ($20). A blend of syrah, mourvèdre, carignan, and other varieties, it’s made in a fresh style with aromas and flavors of herbs, spice and red fruit. It will shine on the Thanksgiving table. 

Syrah is one of Washington’s greatest strengths, with wines that range in styles from earthy/savory to fruit filled. Check out the 2014 Barnard Griffin Syrah Columbia Valley ($17). It’s loaded with blueberry aromas and flavors with a silky feel – a complete delight.
