What: Flying Trout Winery The Brook Blend Columbia Valley 2011 $35
Why: With Flying Trout Winery’s The Brook Blend, winemaker Ashley Trout riffs on the traditional Bordeaux-style blend. Instead of featuring cabernet sauvignon or merlot as the lead grape variety, Trout made this wine 60 percent malbec and 40 percent cabernet sauvignon.
Malbec started to make waves in Washington a little over five years ago when an increasing number of growers and winemakers began experimenting with the grape. The variety has shown great promise in the state, developing a reputation for rich plum and herb flavors, peppery spices, and soft mouthfeel.
The 2011 Flying Trout The Brook Blend has all this and more. It’s a captivating wine with notes of herbs, cocoa, and dark plum. The velvety, elegant mouthfeel is where this wine truly shines, however, along with a lingering, fruit-filled finish—a true ‘Wow!’ wine.
