were devout practitioners of the College Revivalist style—aka what happens when your living room is furnished with Craigslist finds and hand-me-downs from your coed days. Then interior designer Lindsey Runyon came along.

“They were ready for grownup furniture,” Runyon says of the Phinney Ridge couple. “They had been living with the space and knew what they wanted.”

Along with a desire for a fresher look, the couple had three main requests: room for storage, more seating, and a better overall flow. The designer zoned in on their postcollege style—contemporary with a midcentury-modern twist—and got to work.

Before the makeover.

Out went a stuffy rolled-arm love seat with fringed pillows; in came a streamlined sofa in gray doeskin. A pair of apple-green armchairs and a sleek coffee table easily expanded the seating arrangement, while custom charcoal-gray storage cabinets anchored the rear wall.

Runyon mixed in eclectic patterns and warm textures throughout to give the space layers of youthful coziness. Handmade pillows purchased from online crafts marketplace Etsy complement the chocolate-brown trellis curtains. A twisted-wool area rug acts as a cozy counterpart to a stainless steel fireplace. And a cluster of bubble lamps steals all the attention.

“They’re young and fun and cool,” Runyon says of her clients. “They were ready for this change, and it was just fun to see the transformation.”
