If we're rounding up retail trends of 2013, the subscription service box is certainly near the top of the list. Sign up and a different box of goodies—be it vegan beauty products, pet toys, or an array of Japanese snacks—arrives on your doorstep each month.

The local iteration of this mail-order movement? MakrBox, a subscription that ships a selection of products sourced in our own backyard. (You get a trend twofer for also shopping local.) Each item is handcrafted in the Pacific Northwest by small artisans and brands and chosen because it reflects the design-forward, innovative spirit of our area.

There are three different subscription levels, ranging from the $14 minimalist box that contains only consumable items to a $59 option with two or three heirloom objects. Subscribers can cancel any time. And if you fall in love with that wildflower honey or repurposed notebook that arrived one month, the MakrBox online store sells extras of all its products.

Boxes ship anywhere in the world, so it's easy to share Seattle with your grandma in Georgia or friend who just left for Florida.
