Pottery Northwest takes first place—and the Golden Jack Bottle award—in the 2010 badminton tournament. (l-r: OtB artistic director Lane Czaplinski, Pottery Northwest’s Natsue Makino and Drew Nicklas, OtB managing director Sarah Wilke)

It only took 15 minutes for us to lose our first-ever match at the On the Boards badminton tournament. Even worse? We lost to dancers. In little black leotards. They literally glided onto the badminton court, curtsied, and kicked our ass. Ugh.

But it was worth the embarrassment to be part of OtB’s (now) annual arts tourney, where costumes and smack-talking are encouraged and the beers only cost a buck. I don’t know what was more entertaining: talking to a cape-wearing intern from Henry Art Gallery or watching the Teen Tix team run around dressed as shuttlecocks. Or acknowledging that artists do have hand-eye coordination.

After four hours of play, Pottery Northwest took home the first place trophy: the Golden Jack D Bottle. I want that bottle. I’m practicing before next year’s tournament. Hear that, Velocity Dance? You’re done.

Award winners:
Best Crowd Cheer | SAM – The Hammering SAM
Most Artistic Playing | Velocity – Volleycity
Hardest Working | Balagan Theatre – Balagan Commando Team
Stick to the Arts | 4Culture – The Bureaucrats
Best Smack Talk | EMP – Spock ‘n’ Rollers
Best Costume | Teen Tix – The Cockettes
Most Team Spirit | Henry Art Gallery – The Henry Cock Blockers

(More pics forthcoming—including one of me and Matt Halverson looking awesome on the court. Hopefully.)
