Like Ugg boots and using the word “locavore” a lot, cupcakes are a trend that seem to be sticking around.

Today, January 5th, marks the opening of the first retail space for cupcake caterer Wink Cupcakes, which has been baking from a commercial kitchen in downtown Seattle since 2006. Lisa Gagnon, general manager of Wink, traces the success of cupcakes to our childhood longings. Scarfing down a cute confection, she says, "really brings people back to a time when they were kids." The store is located at 1817 Queen Anne Avenue, and is open today from 8am to 7pm.

We had the chance to sample some of the cakes, and heartily suggest the mint brownie—one of Wink’s “flavors of the week.” (Order three days in advance to ensure availability, minimum one dozen per order). It looks like a cupcake, but it hits the palate like the slightly gooey bit o’ heaven that you’d expect from a bona fide brownie. The winner from the regular menu was coconut, which appealed with real coconut flakes scattered atop cream cheese icing.

The cupcakery will also be serving Whidbey Island Ice Cream and plans to hook sugar fiends with a buy-one-get-one-half-off afternoon happy hour.
