Today marks the opening of Plum Vegan Bistro, a 100 percent meatless, dairyfree, and organic restaurant at 1429 12th Avenue (former home of Cafe Stellina). Head chef and owner is Makini Howell, also owner of vegan sandwich company Hillside Quickie.

Do come in and support her. “I’m so nervous for the opening of Plum, I had a complete breakdown last week” Howell told Seattle Met’s Parisa Sadrzadeh.

She grew more confident, however, when she talked about the decor. “I was going after a really nice rustic feminine feel, and I think I achieved it. The restaurant is painted purple, green, and brown with concrete walls and 15-foot-high wood ceilings."

So what does the cruelty-free cook recommend for dinner? “The Southern fried seitan. It’s like Southern fried steak—charred with fresh thyme roasted potatoes and wild mushroom gravy.”

And all ye vegans who’ve been watching with drooling (albeit righteous) envy as the city slurps up massive quantities of Molly Moon’s, fear not: Howell’s sister is honing a dessert menu that features soy-based soft serve ice cream.

There are plans for a full bar with a weekday happy hour, though the liquor license is still pending, Howell confirmed today.
