Art Intern

Seattle Met magazine is currently seeking smart and creative design interns to help with the production of our full-color magazine. The position requires a minimum of 15 hours a week in 4- to 5-hour stints. The duration of this unpaid internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of each candidate. We are flexible with student schedules during the academic year, and the internship can be used to fulfill school credit. There is also the possibility to be paid for ad design as a freelancer.

Depending on skill level, art intern opportunities may include page design and layout, photo research, marketing/collateral design, inputting editorial corrections, spot illustration, scanning and adjusting photos, ad design (paid as freelance), participating in team brainstorming meetings, and assisting with some administrative tasks.

When interns have proved successful on smaller art assignments, interns may have the opportunity to contribute to or even design departments or features. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned.

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in design, photography, illustration, publishing, or journalism, have a good understanding of print design, a working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and Mac OS X, the ability to juggle several assignments at once, and have an interest in publication design.

Editorial Interns

ABOUT US

Seattle Metropolitan is seeking smart and outgoing interns for our editorial department, located in Seattle, Washington. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.We are currently looking for fall interns in all beats, or areas of concentration: News and Politics, Food and Drink, the Arts, Style and Bridal, and Travel and Tourism, Social Media, Copyediting. The fall internship begins August 17.

WHAT WE OFFER

Learn firsthand how an award-winning magazine and website are put together. Editorial interns are responsible for fact-checking; primary research and reporting for food and drink and arts blogs; editing blog posts for typos, bad links, and for optimized positioning in web searches; writing event and business listings; participating in team brainstorms; assisting editors in conceptualizing and/or executing features such as Best Doctors and multimedia projects such as slide shows, audio, and/or video content; publishing magazine content to our website using our content management system; editing blogs for SEO; and assisting with some administrative tasks.

Interns are expected to work closely with the respective editors of their beat and must be willing to pitch in where needed in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Interns who shine at the simpler tasks will have the opportunity to work on larger projects, such as contributing to features and writing departments. We want our interns to walk away with strong clips that they have earned.

The position requires a minimum of 20 hours a week in 4- to 5-hour stints between the hours of 8:30am and 5:30pm weekdays.

ABOUT YOU

The ideal candidate is eager, independent, and wants to learn. Candidates should be working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the liberal arts, especially journalism, English literature, publishing, or creative writing; graduates are also accepted. Successful candidates commonly have previous editorial experience at school magazines, newspapers, or journals; strong interest in magazine writing; good phone and research skills; and the ability to juggle several assignments at once. Interns must be located in the Seattle area during the internship. Experience with InDesign, Photoshop, and content management systems is helpful but not required. Digital photography and/or video experience is helpful but not required.

COMPENSATION

Unpaid; students may take the internship for college credit. And, ahem, you will learn firsthand how an award-winning magazine and website are put together.

Marketing & Events Graphic Design Intern

Seattle Met magazine is currently seeking a bright and motivated marketing design intern to assist in the marketing department. The duration of this internship is generally 12 to 16 weeks depending on the needs/schedule of the candidate. Hours required would be between 10 and 20 hours each week, and we are very flexible with student schedules during the academic year. Company policy requires this internship goes towards school credit because it is an unpaid position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Print designs (including posters, flyers, certificates, signage, various booklets, and ads for the magazine)
  • Web content designs (including web ads, e-blasts, and various graphics)
  • Updating existing design files with new text and images
  • Photo retouching
  • Research for design projects, including collecting photos, graphics and font files

DESCRIPTION

As an intern you will be guided by our Marketing Designer, on how to design and correctly set up various files for print. You will also build files for the web, but you will be trained on how to do this so your web design skills can be minimal. You will learn how to manage and organize files on our server. You will also work with the Senior Advertising Coordinator and various marketing staff to help with design projects.

This internship will give you experience with doing a large variety of design projects, and will challenge you to try different techniques and styles. You will leave the internship with more projects for you portfolio along with the design skills to work in a fast paced work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be working toward a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, and have already been through portfolio review. Must have experience working with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Good organization skills in regards to file management and a strong attention to detail are required. Candidate must be able to use this internship towards school credit.
