If you're wondering what's going on at the King County Metro cuts hearing tonight (or haven't been able to get in to the meeting thanks to the blocks-long line outside the King County Courthouse), I've been Tweeting from inside the meeting for the past couple hours.

why is everyone soo angry there is a middle ground get Metro's affairs in order, really weed out the coruption, reopen the union contracts, then ask the voters for money.

Well for one, b/c downtown pays extra for it. Secondly considering the large crowds of people, having it be ride free can actually save money by speeding up the loading process. Time = Money. We would need to move to a Proof of Payment with offboard payment (think Link) before we can think about getting rid of the RFA.

I wonder how many of the King County Council members at attendance last night actually rode Metro home. I'm sure Larry Phillips didn't. If they did, we wouldn't be having these problems.

thanks god we are building the DBT for a few billion, while cutting Metro. Those chavs really need to walk more. Meanwhile the right kind of people should be whisked from the highlands to the stadiums to put down $400 for a family night at a mariners or football game by using a tolled DBT. This will tell the job creators they are important, then they will go create more jobs thru their meet and greets in the delux boxes at the stadiums; then after creating more jobs there will be more sales tax; then maybe we can restore metro, depending on if the chavs have walked enough miles to lose some weight. So remember -- DBT yes, Metro who cares?

Efficiencies and cuts have been going on for the last several years. The contract was not "reopened", but it was renegotiated on its regular expiration, and drivers took substantial concessions and no raise this year. They have yet to conduct a review of cost savings at management levels, however.

The contracts for drivers and vehicle maintenance were just renegotiated and ratified this last January, with union members taking substantial concessions and no raises. Scheduling efficiencies - which have all but eliminated even basic meal and restroom breaks for drivers - have been going on for the last 2 years. Metro has NOT conducted an audit of potential cost savings at the administrative/management level, however.
