Tooth and Beauty

A progressive dental clinic relies on the pleasure principle.

When I was a kid, I remember walking in the door of the dentist, and it smelled like cloves and burning tooth. You had some tired guy with the same 20-year-old National Geographics on his counter, it was cold, and the drills had smoke coming out of them,” says Dr. Joseph Zimmer. “If you’re going to say to patients, ‘This is not your grandmother’s dentistry,’ then it really needs to start right at the front door.”

And at Zimmer’s 17th-floor aerie in the Medical Dental Building, it does. Witness the frosted and engraved glass window in his office entrance—five-foot tall lilies etched in crisp art deco style (a good match for the building’s 1920’s bronze lighting fixtures). Inside the waiting room, rust-colored Eames-style sofas line up beneath surrealist, neoclassical Japanese prints and a giant red lithograph bearing the words “I Want What You Want / Happy Ever After.” Zimmer’s office cat—a slinker named Sumisan—peers sleepily at staff while flocks of finches do loops around a massive bird feeder just outside the waiting room’s plate glass window.

But wait—there’s more. Up a column of stone stairs is Zimmer’s pièce de résistance: his preventative care unit offering 270-degree crow’s nest views of the city, and encircled by a rooftop garden of potted cedars, pines, and maples sculpted like giant bonsai trees. Inside, a dazzling white vaulted enclave with gray-veined white marble floors and broad, ceiling-to-floor windows is rimmed by chalk-white window benches. Four winsome, black-clad hygienists chatter with patients between rinses and spits. “In the bad old days of dentistry,” says Zimmer, “you just worked and worked on the same people all the time.” But now, he says, his patient population is so “clean,” all they really tend to need is maintenance. “It becomes like a haircut,” he says. And that idea led him to his “open concept” unit; with its multiple chairs separated only by petite hanging scrims, the place feels more like a high-energy hair salon than a dental office. No surgeries are done here (those happen in private rooms, elsewhere), it’s just teeth cleaning, checkups, diagnoses, and (coming soon)—botox? “People trust me to give shots, and they’re here every six months anyway,” Zimmer explains. “If you’re already going to the dentist, you don’t have to cop to it when your
spouse says, ‘What did you do today, honey?’ ” But he’s also quick to assert that he’s not running a dental spa. “I’m a serious dentist with lots of degrees and stuff…we don’t massage people’s feet or anything.” Zimmer points out his state-of-the-art equipment, like a $50,000 machine that receives wireless transmissions from a laser-guided tooth scanner (no more nasty-tasting plaster impressions) and then carves, bakes, and glazes new crowns in one hour—just enough time for the patient to grab a cup of coffee. He’s got devices that screen for early-stage mouth cancers and digital x-ray machines that put out 90 percent less radiation than the old kind. Plus, from any room in the suite he can bring up a patient’s records, images—anything—with the click of a mouse.

Such convenience and panache have made Zimmer’s office busy with patients who actually seem to enjoy going to the dentist—a crowning accomplishment, to be sure.
