ECMO TO GO

Seattleites feel lucky to have Children’s Hospital in their own backyard, but sick kids from surrounding states rely on the world-class facility as well. Sadly, faraway pediatric patients facing a respiratory or cardiac emergency often die before reaching the hospital or can never make the trip at all. To get them here safely, Dr. Mike McMullan designed a briefcase-size mobile ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation)—or heart-lung—machine that can sustain patients while their organs recuperate, increasing survival rates by more than 60 percent. Children’s will also use the machines for cardiac arrest victims, making it the first facility in the region to employ ECPR—extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
