TUMOR PAINT

When cutting out cancers, surgeons use imperfect indicators like texture and blood supply to guide their incisions—causing them to remove healthy tissue and leave malignant bits in the body. About 80 percent of brain tumors, for instance, reappear around the surgical site. But there’s hope: Working at both Fred Hutchinson and Children’s Hospital, Dr. Jim Olson has created “tumor paint,” a scorpion-venom-derived substance that illuminates malignancies so docs can distinguish tumors from normal tissue. The miraculous poison paint (the venom, in this form, doesn’t harm the patient) has identified cancer cells when just 200 are present; current methods like MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) require at least 1 million for detection.
