But that harrowing statistic didn’t stop Austrian Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner from becoming the first woman to summit the world’s 14 highest mountains (the “eight-thousanders”) without supplemental oxygen. That’s even after her husband, one of the leaders of the K2 climb, decided halfway up the peak to stop.
