Like French hens and celebrity deaths, new happy hours seem to come in threes. Here are some promising destinations for some snack-fueled conviviality.
Elliott's Seafood Cafe
The newish oyster bar spinoff of the venerable waterfront seafood restaurant has added a late-night happy hour, perfectly situated for anyone who braves the weather to ride the Ferris wheel. Oysters run $1.25 apiece and a list of $5 plates includes buffalo oysters, smoked salmon jalapeno poppers, a squid escabeche, and sliders made with pulled beef that's been braised in root beer. Certain wine pours are $5, draft beers are $4 (or $3 if you fancy a Coors Light), and there's a specially priced cocktail list, too.
When: Sunday through Thursday, 8-10 and Friday and Saturday, 8-11.
Hunger 2.0
Since moving to its spacious new quarters, the Fremont restaurant has retooled its menu a bit and lowered prices. The ensuing happy hour menu offers more than a dozen plates at $3, $5, or $7 each. A trio of dollar bills buys you a housemade sausage, some smoked gouda, or olive tapenade and crostini. Five-buck dishes include stuffed dates or a duo of braised pork sliders. And for those who really want to make it rain, the burger is on the $7 list. House wines, drafts, and certain well drinks and cocktails are $5.
When: Daily, 4-6, Sunday through Thursday 10-11, and Fridays and Saturdays from 11pm to midnight. Bar and patio only.
South Lake Union Veggie Grill
This Santa Monica-based chainlet likes to avoid the word "vegan," but its menu of hearty comfort food and uncannily accurate meat substitutes is 100-percent plant. The South Lake Union location now entices after-work Amazonians with a $5 combo of an appetizer and a can of PBR. Choose from two kinds of wings (crispy barbecue or buffalo-style with attendant celery sticks) or nachos. The full menu is obviously available then, too.
When: Daily, 4-6.
