Skillet Diner: Ballard
Early birds and night owls now have reason to rejoice. As of Monday, Skillet Diner's new Ballard location is open for business. Drop in for a bite at 2034 NW 56th Street, open from 7 am to midnight daily.
Outside the Box
Caterers and CrossFit devotees Charles Aguiling and Marizel Yuen rolled out their paleo diet food truck recently. They're currently building a regular schedule, but you can most often find them outside various CrossFit studios for lunch. Popular menu items include pork carnitas on lettuce wraps and the grass-fed beef sliders topped with bacon and served in an almond bun.
The small food and wine shop opened this week across the street from Matt Dillon's Bar Sajor in Pioneer Square, Eater Seattle says. A collaboration between Dillon and restaurateur Katherine Anderson, the shop offers a small selection of food and wine, along with retail goods like cookbooks, flowers, and house items. A larger space will open later this year with a larger menu and selection of pantry goods and retail items.
Sustainable sandwich shop Homegrown sent word that its fourth location opened this week in downtown on the corner of Second and Marion. The menu is the same, though this location will start pouring Stumptown espresso this fall. Check out Facebook for photos of the new space.
Lucase Neve (formerly at Cafe Lago) is now serving up wood-fired pizzas at 20 Roy St in Lower Queen Anne, according to Queen Anne View. The menu is fairly small, with offerings based on what's in season. A rotation of craft beers (including growler fills) and a small selection of wines are also available.
Alki's Bada Bistro quietly closed last week, five months after its opening, West Seattle Blog notes. National chain Fatburger will be taking over the space, opening rather quickly sometime this month or in September.
Martino's Smoked Meats and Eatery
Seattle carnivores and sandwich fans can now add another eatery to their list of restaurants to try. Martino's will open later this month on Phinney Ridge. A commercial smoker will produce a variety of smoked meats like chicken, tri tip, pork, and even tomatoes for salsa. They'll be served up in sandwich form by day, and entree-type plannters in the evening.
Hitchcock owner Brendan McGill is opening a German-style hall of beer and brats in Pioneer Square. McGill says Altstadt will be a happy medium between higher-end spots arriving in the neighborhood and the rowdier bar crowd. Keep your eye out for an October opening, just in time to catch the excitement over Oktoberfest.
The locally owned salad shop will officially open August 21 at Third and Marion. You can design your own veggies-protein-dressing combo, or get one of the 14 house salads, though it will involve speaking aloud names like Big Schrimpin' or Dice Dice Baby. CHS reports Taylor Hoang, owner of Seattle's group of Vietnamese restaurants, Pho Cyclo, is adding new menu items to appeal to customers looking to escape the summer heat. Drop in for grilled salmon, black sesame spicy noodle salad, or a spicy mint and lemongrass chicken banh mi, all less than $11.
Meeru Dhalwala's South Lake Union Indian restaurant recently announced it's introducing happy hour to the menu from 4 to 5:30pm. Look for craft cocktails and a small selection of white and red wine, rose, and draft beer, and $5 savory Indian snacks.
The Neopolitan-certified restaurant in West Seattle is adding a private event space next door, West Seattle Blog says. Pizzeria 22's owners signed the lease on the empty 800 square feet storefront next door and are planning to create a small pass-through to join the original storefront to the event space. The space should be ready by winter, fully equiped with an espresso bar and a dough-making facility.
CHS reports Broadway's only vegan bar will be ending its food service next Tuesday. Owner Dylan Desmond says he's hoping to focus more on live music and performing arts, likely to appeal to the nightlife crowd on Capitol Hill. Don't fret though, nearby, Plum is still around to satisfy the vegan belly.
Downtown's casual French restaurant is losing two lead chefs this month, Eater Seattle reports. Pastry chef Kim Mahar is leaving the restaurant next Wednesday and executive chef Seis Kamimura left last week to take up an undisclosed position at CenturyLink.
Starbucks: 23rd and Jackson
The Seattle Times has news one of Central District's most popular Starbucks shops is partnering with the YWCA to convert to a "community store." Fifteen cents from each transaction at the store will be donated to Seattle's YWCA's GirlsFirst and Young Parent programs which offers girls of color after-school activities, summer leadership training, and mentoring, among other programs.

Bar Sajor, Joule, and The Whale Wins
Bon Appetit recently announced the 50 finalists for its list of 10 best new restaurants. Three Seattle restaurants made the national list (never mind the fact that Joule isn't technically new) with The Whale Wins touted as "rustic, wood-fired dishes driven by the bounty of the Pacific Northwest" and Joule is lauded for its focus on beef.
