How’s this for awesome: The area’s newest food truck is all about artisan cheese. But it isn’t a food truck in the traditional sense—The Milkman’s Daughter is more of a mobile grocer.
"Basically, it’s a cheese shop and gourmet deli out of a 1956 vintage Wimbledon Ford," explains Inger Herman, the woman behind the wheel.
Herman will tell you she’s no cheese expert but she is undoubtedly a curd nerd. Her love for the stuff goes back to childhood. She spent summers on dairy farms in Norway and recalls eating gjetost, a brown Norwegian cheese, in elementary school. She’s equally enthusiastic about vino, and it was during a wine-and-cheese filled trip to Salt Spring Island that she and husband Steve realized too few wineries offer savories for your sipping. And so the Milkman’s Daughter was born.
Herman expects the truck to carry around 15 kinds of cheese, from goat to gouda to cheddar. The goal is to mostly stock labels from the Northwest down to California, such as Rogue Creamery, Tillamook, and Mt. Townsend. Savories include salami, prosciutto, olives, artichoke dip, and tapenade; there are jams, jellies, and "some little sweets," too. Eventually Herman will sell bundled picnic baskets.
As the foods are selected with wine tasting in mind, it only makes sense Herman will stick to the Eastside. She made her debut last weekend at Brian Carter Cellars, and will park outside tasting rooms in Woodinville primarily on the weekends. Enjoy the savories on the spot or over a bottle at home—it’s up to you.
