Introducing Life’s Flix

A Pierce County company wants to make your friends and relatives into stars on YouTube.

Email

Depending on the creativity and talent of your circle of friends and the disposition of your family, the idea of handing a select five or ten of them a video camera and letting the fate of your wedding-day movie rest in their hands might seem really crazy. Especially if you’re thinking you’d then get a pile of digital footage in return, along with maybe a well-intended, ‘Have fun with that!’

Wedding videos, whether professionally created or some Uncle Jack job, are all about the editing. A lot will happen during your approximately eight-hour big day, and a lot will need to happen in order to elegantly cram it into anything that anyone (including you) will want to sit down and watch.

If hiring a professional videographer isn’t in your budget, a couple of dudes in Steilacoom (that’s southwest of Tacoma, pardner) have a solution, and it’s called Life’s Flix.

The newly launched company sends you five or ten cameras, depending on the package you select. You bestow a special honor/duty on a few friends and family members, and then return the cameras to Life’s Flix later.

In other words, you wash your hands of the whole editing process. The company’s storytelling and digital tech pros cull the best scenes into something akin to the footage of this destination event on Life Flix’s YouTube channel. (Don’t have 35 minutes on your hands? Check out the abbreviated version above.)

New Venue: 1927 Events

The folks behind Sole Repair and inside the kitchen at Scott Staples’ Feed Co. Catering open a new spot in the heart of downtown.

Email
1927_feed_co

A portion of Feed Co.’s spread at the recent Linked wedding fair; Feed Co. is the catering partner for 1927, the new downtown event space.

It’s an address, it’s emblematic of an era, it’s a new L-shaped reception space on Third Avenue from the folks who do Sole Repair up on Capitol Hill: 1927 Events has arrived.

Well, almost.

I recently met co-owner Grace Hoffman and Feed Co catering director Stacy Paczan (the Scott Staples-fronted cookery is the official food and drink outfit for the Pike Street venue and the new downtown one) inside the work-in-progress and got the scoop.

Hoffman’s partner has been holding on to the space—around the corner from the Moore Theatre and convenient to lots of downtown parking and hotels—for some time, but build-outs like these take time. (Read: Staples isn’t going to just cook any-old-where, and I’ve heard the kitchen is going to be fantastic.) The original structure, which was built around 1927, gave way to lots of great brick and exposed beams, and the architects and designers were able to repurpose materials—and add elements of Swing era charm of course. I was too early to see the chandeliers and other finishing touches, but they’ll be in place soon; several weddings are on the books for this summer.

In addition to top shelf catering, 1927 offers the whole seating shebang: tables and chairs are included, and they’ve got room for 300 celebratory guests for a cocktail, stand-up style affair, or 190 when a full, sit-down dinner is planned.

Pepper-crusted pork loin, red beets, green beans, walnuts and watercress with a salad of shaved summer squash, sweet peppers, grilled bread and parmesan dressing, anyone? Maybe some sage falafel bites with lemon-paprika mayo and a one or two wild boar Sloppy Joe minis with onion-sage crumbles?

Hoffman, Paczan, and their cohorts are planning an open house at the end of June. Stay tuned; we’ll make sure you have the details.

Next Question: Melissa Parker, Amazing Events

This new series explores the questions you should be asking potential wedding vendors.

Email
Azzura_photography_4

Ask her anything: Melissa Parker, wedding consultant and owner of Amazing Events.

Welcome to Next Question, a new series that focuses on trade secrets from leading local wedding vendors. We ask them what questions clients should ask—but don’t. That’s right: They’ll tell us what concern they seldom hear voiced, and of course, the reply to that missing query as well. The question you’ll be answering as you peruse this series is, Am I asking the best questions? The answer, provided you keep reading, will be yes.

Wedding consultant Melissa Parker of Amazing Events probably hears all kinds of good questions, but the one she doesn’t often get is:

The venue we’re considering has a wedding coordinator on staff. Why would I need to hire a separate wedding planner?

Here’s why she says this is an important concern to voice.

“The venue’s coordinator is usually a catering sales manager who will help plan the details that pertain to that venue—like overseeing the menu details, floor plan, and room reservations,” says Parker. “But they won’t be intricately involved in every aspect of the wedding like a professional bridal consultant will.”

And Parker would know: She’s been planning weddings and events for the past 13 years. Her award-winning planning has taken her all the way to Hawaii, but luckily for Seattleites, her focus is all local. So what can you expect from a planner like Parker that you won’t get from your venue’s coordinator?

“The planner will assist with etiquette of invitations, family matters, the ceremony and toasts,” Parker says. “They will assist with designing the decor, be the liaison with vendors and the wedding party, and coordinate the rehearsal.”

Read: Instead of fielding phone calls from your florist, caterer, DJ, or the flower girl’s mom, you can enjoy your wedding knowing you’ve hired a professional to specifically take care of those essential details. And your venue coordinator will thank you for letting her focus on the locale.

The end result? Parker says, “The venue coordinator and your wedding planner will work together to ensure a smooth event.”

Preorder: Elizabeth Messina’s The Luminous Portrait

Some ideas about getting the most out of your wedding day photographs.

Email
Elizabeth_messina

Messina’s book focuses on capturing natural light to create the most engagingly gorgeous portraits.

Part of what makes folks fall in love with weddings—theirs and others—is the imagery. They scroll through blogs and flip through magazines looking for dress ideas or flower inspiration, and they’re struck again and again with these almost impossibly beautiful photographs. I don’t know if science has a name for it but there’s little room to refute the notion that women are about four thousand times as lovely on their wedding day, and men equally as handsome. Grandmothers glow, nieces and nephews become ridiculously cute.

And sure, that beauty comes from within. Without a doubt. But it also comes from the hand and eye of a skilled photographer. No doubt about that, either.

Many readers and colleagues have asked me about the fashion spread in the current issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom, shot by LA-based photographer Elizabeth Messina. It is, indeed, a thing of beauty and we’re excited to have it in our magazine. Messina’s first book, The Luminous Portrait is available for preorder on Amazon now (it ships on April 24), and it strikes me that it’s as good a recommendation for soon-to-be-married types as it is for up and coming photographers.

The glow will come naturally, but will the ability to hold your body gracefully? Not all of us are completely at home in front of the camera, but in studying the portrait work of the best wedding shooters, couples should be able to glean angles that will work for them on the big day, and even ideas about what kinds of lighting they like best.

Of course, there are other ways to prepare. Go back through all those award-show images and watch how Rooney Mara holds her arms not in a triangle shape at her waist, but softly in front of her in a sort of relaxed air hug. And how about that grip and grin between Madonna and Andrea Riseborough? Their bodies make a slight V, not a straight plane. And even though Evan Rachel Wood is doing that hand-on-hip thing, she’s also making a pretty sweet S-curve with her body. If there’s one thing the red carpet can teach you, it’s that you really don’t even want to lock your knees and go stiff.

The photographer you hire can teach you a lot, too. Consider booking an engagement session if for no other reason than to practice your moves and work with him or her (or them; many top shooters are husband-and-wife teams) to learn how to meld your styles and come together as a team.

Seattle Wedding Show

You’re invited to our (booth at the) wedding (show) on January 7 & 8.

Inspiration

All I can reveal is that this image is serving as a major inspiration piece for Seattle Met Bride & Groom’s SWS booth.

About once or twice a year, I get to feeling like I’m the one planning a wedding. Sometimes it’s because of an elaborate feature we’re planning, but more often it’s a party that gets me.

This year, it’s the annual Seattle Wedding Show at the Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday January 7 and 8. You can get your tickets here.

It’s all about the booth at a show like this; we—the florists, the DJs, the caterers, the venues, the cake bakers—all want to create a space that you will inspire you. And inspire conversation. I’ll be there all weekend and we definitely want you to come by and say hi.

This time around we’re working with the crazy-talented Steven Moore (who just got married himself), the great resources at ABC Rentals by Cort, and one of the most popular new vendors in town, Vintage Ambiance.

It’s possible that I’m the pickiest “bride” they’ve worked with all year. We’re throwing around ideas on color and trends, inspiration and innovation, and comforting, welcoming environments. Stuff you’re thinking about, too, huh?

So come by and we’ll compare notes. I’m looking forward to it.

Floral, stationary, and rental companies collaborated to create a dream-worthy scene.

Models dressed in finery from Belle Reve swished and swayed through the crowds throughout the evening; one lucky bidder won the dress of her choice from the Bellevue bridal salon.

Aside from being a kick*&^ fundraiser, Get Hitched is two things: a chance to mingle and meet with the wedding vendors assembled for the event (pictured here, the gals from Junebug), and a chance to win their goods— in both silent and live auctions.

View Slideshow » Photo: La Vie Photography

During the silent auction portion of the evening, folks enjoyed cocktails and made connections. And not a soul in attendance missed this gal, who was dressed in the gown that La Belle Reve’s owner designed and wore to her own celebration.

Brook and Jubal from Moving 95 were this year’s hosts.

Representatives from this event’s beneficiaries were particularly great this time around. Hearing about one particular young woman’s resolve made all the difference. As she laughed through her tears and told her story, we all understood why we were there. Money raised goes directly to foundations who grant wishes for those living with potentially fatal cancer and other conditions.

And then it was time for me get up on the auction block. Would you believe someone donated $1,000 to the cause in exchange for a shopping date with me?

View Slideshow » Photo: La Vie Photography

There’s the lucky winner!

View Slideshow » Photo: La Vie Photography

At the end of the evening, when the numbers were crunched, a real party broke out. You better believe that Seattle’s best party throwers are also Seattle’s best party people.

Besting last year’s total by more than 20 grand, the recent Get Hitched Give Hope gala raised a whopping $85,000 for the Dream Foundation, the event’s primary benefactor, and the Young Survivor’s Coalition, who will also see the benefits of those funds.

While that’s a hugely gratifying number and speaks volumes about everyone involved, it’s also important to note that many a Seattle bride-and-groom got their dreams fulfilled that night, too.

There were auction bidders-n-winners for bridesmaid bouquets, wedding planning, hair and makeup design, and much more; including a guided, chauffeured shopping trip with yours truly. How much did that last one go for? Click through the slideshow to find out.

Thanks to everyone who was there—including all those dudes who came out this year. Grooms forever! And big love and many, many thanks to the organizers and sponsors of this important and excellent yearly event. We couldn’t be more honored to be involved.

New Venue: The Oasis

SLIDESHOW: A few shots of Herban Feast’s new property, the Oasis. Check the built-in stone elements and SoDo Park-like loft flavor. And now that you’re here, consider hanging out for a bit… the food trucks will be along any minute now.

View Slideshow » Illustration: View Slideshow » Illustration:

On a recent Thursday (read: it wasn’t even a summer month) I drove by SoDo Park at around 5:30 and saw a priest-led bridal party out on the sidewalk, waiting to make their grand entrance.

5:30 on a Thursday? Now that’s the sign of some recessionary restructuring (of tradition, that is)—and a very, very popular venue.

So it’s no wonder the Herban Feast folks (the ownership team behind SoDo Park) snapped up the property next door to their beloved First Ave South hub when it became available.

The newly christened Oasis can accommodate up to 100 for seated events, and cocktail parties for up to 200. And while guests certainly may utilize the award-winning catering chefs at Herban Feast, the 18-foot sliding door that leads to the drive-in courtyard provides access for on-trend food truck delivery service. Good Times.

It’s worth noting that many a venue owner would have made on-site catering a condition of rental at the new spot. HF head BJ Duft just isn’t that kind of guy. The food truck thing is too fun and too perfect, so the company is partnering with a fleet of mobile food trucks including Fusion on the Run, Parfait Ice Cream, The Bistro Box, Skillet, and Marination Mobile so that guests can get the most out of the space’s architectural elements and the city’s meals-on-wheels.

Speaking of architectural elements; a built-in rock garden, tons of lusciously non-native plants, and lofty ceilings are responsible for the warm, lounge-evoking name. And speaking of lounge: while the Oasis can be booked as a stand-alone event space, it can also be an add-on to events celebrated at SoDo Park. Imagine an adjacent cocktail area, or an add-on dessert room (paging the aforementioned ice cream delivery …) for your 200-person celebration. Unlike most other venues, the Oasis is available at hourly or block rates, so couples and planners will want to keep it in mind for bachelor parties, rehearsal dinners, and the like.

And check this out: If you book by November 15 for events occurring before the end of January 2012 (do I hear a shotgun?), you can save up to 50 percent off the booking fee. (Subject to availability; contact 206-932-4717 for complete information.)

The Luly Yang fashion show is a big highlight at Urban Unveiled each year.

Where: Benaroya Hall

What: Dozens of vendors in categories from hair and makeup and stationary to photographers and wedding planners gather inside one of downtown’s grandest meeting places because they want to meet you. Stroll the upper tiers and tuck into side rooms to meet, talk with, and sample the talents of some of Seattle’s top wedding professionals.

And do it all in a timely manner; the Luly Yang fashion show starts at 9. Yang has debuted her collections at Urban Unveiled for the past few years; it’s a great chance to see her most recent designs in action—on the runway, that is. Which is not that different from an aisle. Correct?

Urban_unveled

Benaroya Hall becomes a top tier wedding show on Wednesday, October 12.

This year’s Urban Unveiled, and this season’s Luly Yang line, is called Diamond, so expect lots of sparkle. I previewed Yang’s newest dresses the other day, and they are just plain stunning.

When: Wednesday, October 12; doors open at 6. Tickets are available through the Urban Unveiled website.

What’s Your Take On… Digital Invites?

A Mercer Island college kid is leading the paperless push in wedding stationery.

Email
2

Do not print this email. One of Greenvelope’s digital save-the-dates.

It finally happened this year: I got not one but two digital wedding invites.

Was I surprised? Yes, very. Was I offended? Absolutely not. Both couples are high-tech, super busy, and very practical. They’re both also very stylish. And super tactile; the women in each of the couples are among the biggest paper-, ink-, design-, and art-lovers I know. If this method of information-spreading was most efficient for them, so be it. I did spend a couple of minutes lamenting that they hadn’t gone the old-fashioned way—only because I knew they would have sent excellent invitations, and I like holding on to that kind of thing. I’m a keepsaker. What can I say?

But there are others who are less accepting about new world trends in “stationery.” For instance, a co-worker and I were chatting about RSVPs and I mentioned the emailed wedding invites. “WHAT???,” she shrieked. I think the guy in the office next to hers is still recovering from the mid-morning sharp-noise startle.

Clearly, however, there are those for whom the progression from analog to digital doesn’t even register. I’m guessing 90 percent of that group is about the same age as Sam Franklin, the Seattle-based founder of Greenvelope, an ad-free electronic invite company that hangs its hat on an environmentally savvy hook. No trees have to die in order for your guests to hear about your celebration, and 10 percent from every package purchased is donated to Mountains to Sound.

The Mercer Island High School grad (class of ’08 in the house?) and current Washington University (St. Louis) student started his company with money from his pressure-washing business and a stint in the pizza delivery industry. Not too shabby. Figuring that a few of you have at least considered paperless invites, and hoping to at least turn you on to a local source if so, I asked Franklin a few questions about formality, expectations, and nostalgia.

WWW: As you started brewing this idea, did you think much about the tradition of paper invites? Do you have any affinity at all to paper communication; do you find value, warmth, or romance in written correspondence, or are you simply of an age where that kind of attachment doesn’t come into play? Did, perhaps, your mother or grandmother or some sensitive uncle have an adverse reaction to your idea early on?
SF: While I can appreciate going to the mailbox and physically opening up a paper invitation, my goal is to generate that same excitement electronically. Traditional paper invitations are expensive, time-consuming, and they sacrifice trees. Greenvelope is the next step to help the tech-savvy generation deliver elegant electronic invitations to their guests with a personalized, advertisement-free, envelope animation. I have worked with many older couples who are equally excited about the idea of saving trees and delivering an exciting experience to their guests.

What would you say to someone who says their wedding is black-tie at the Four Seasons and the bride is wearing Luly Yang and there just is no way they could consider not sending out engraved six-piece invite suites to set the tone for their very upscale event. Invites are, of course, the first impression of an event, and (this hypothetical person is saying), they can’t possibly imagine conveying all that their wedding is going to be with via computer or smart phone screen.
Green is hip and classy. The most formal wedding of our decade stirred up controversy when Kate and Prince William sent the Royal Wedding save the Date via fax. If Kate and William can embrace the convenience and greenness of technology, can’t we all? Times are certainly changing. So, if the Four Seasons couple is looking for the most luxurious online experience to complement a luxurious event, Greenvelope fills this niche. For those couples that are still 100 percent set on paper for the invitation, they often just utilize the electronic save the date functionality that Greenvelope offers. Every little bit helps to reduce paper waste!

Do you save or collect anything? I’m sort of a hopeless romantic, and a very tactile person, and I save a lot of paper goods, including invites and the like. I’m wondering if you are oriented that way at all and also if there is any way that Greenvelopes can be saved—have couples expressed a desire to keep some form of their invitation? Have guests?
I appreciate the value of keeping memorabilia, and I certainly understand why one would want to save an elegant, custom invitation created electronically. In fact, I keep my computer very organized and save many photos, messages, playlists, etc. Now, more and more couples are keeping and sharing many wedding memories electronically through wedding websites, Flickr, Facebook, and other social services. Since I do not want to encourage printing, Greenvelope does not offer this functionality by default. However, I do provide couples the opportunity to save a high-quality version of the invitation to their computer. Most couples take advantage of this option and print an invitation for grandparents and themselves.
