Introducing Life’s Flix

A Pierce County company wants to make your friends and relatives into stars on YouTube.

Email

Depending on the creativity and talent of your circle of friends and the disposition of your family, the idea of handing a select five or ten of them a video camera and letting the fate of your wedding-day movie rest in their hands might seem really crazy. Especially if you’re thinking you’d then get a pile of digital footage in return, along with maybe a well-intended, ‘Have fun with that!’

Wedding videos, whether professionally created or some Uncle Jack job, are all about the editing. A lot will happen during your approximately eight-hour big day, and a lot will need to happen in order to elegantly cram it into anything that anyone (including you) will want to sit down and watch.

If hiring a professional videographer isn’t in your budget, a couple of dudes in Steilacoom (that’s southwest of Tacoma, pardner) have a solution, and it’s called Life’s Flix.

The newly launched company sends you five or ten cameras, depending on the package you select. You bestow a special honor/duty on a few friends and family members, and then return the cameras to Life’s Flix later.

In other words, you wash your hands of the whole editing process. The company’s storytelling and digital tech pros cull the best scenes into something akin to the footage of this destination event on Life Flix’s YouTube channel. (Don’t have 35 minutes on your hands? Check out the abbreviated version above.)

Powell and the Belathee gals staged their imagined affair at Pravda Studios, a second-floor, light-filled space that takes on whatever vibe its visitors can dream up.

Powell, a florist and an event designer, let white cattleya orchids and air plants inspire the floral elements.

Powell created centerpieces that took the original bouquet concept one step further; ‘Why not? Citrus! It doesn’t exactly fill our Pacific Northwest backyards, but it’s the ultimate pop of freshness and color, and thankfully grows beautifully just two states away,’ she says.

I love the simple, classic look of these boutonnieres.

Clear glass was the main table element—it’s there in sleek candelabras, heavyweight cut crystal, and a number of places in-between. Metallic accents in the linens, flatware, and votives added a touch of urban cool. Chairs are from Pravda Studios; table lines are from Choice Linens; crystal stemware is from AA Party Rentals; gold flatware is from the Invisible Hostess.

Powell, an avowed paper junkie with a graphic design background, brought in the talents of Swash Letterpress for the menu cards.

Powell: ‘Although I wanted to err on the side of a more modern design, I couldn’t resist using one of Vintage Ambiance’s amazing antique sideboards for our dessert display. And in fact, the rich cocoa and ganache cake by Tallant House sitting atop the vintage table made for just the type of unexpected juxtaposition I love.’

Here’s a reminder that there’s more to wedding photography than portraits and documentary shots. If you’re looking for something artistic and dramatic to remember your day, make sure you talk about that with potential photographers.

There are Real Weddings and then there are, well … imagined ones. The latter: inspiration shoots orchestrated by talented vendors who want to share a vision about the way things could be.

Here, for example, a ‘clean, fresh, polished’ reception space—one that ‘feels glamorous and welcoming; traditional yet modern,’ as dreamt up by McKenzie Powell of the event design consultancy of the same name and photographed by the duo of Annabel Braithwaite and Dorothee Brand of Belathee Photography.

Preorder: Elizabeth Messina’s The Luminous Portrait

Some ideas about getting the most out of your wedding day photographs.

Email
Elizabeth_messina

Messina’s book focuses on capturing natural light to create the most engagingly gorgeous portraits.

Part of what makes folks fall in love with weddings—theirs and others—is the imagery. They scroll through blogs and flip through magazines looking for dress ideas or flower inspiration, and they’re struck again and again with these almost impossibly beautiful photographs. I don’t know if science has a name for it but there’s little room to refute the notion that women are about four thousand times as lovely on their wedding day, and men equally as handsome. Grandmothers glow, nieces and nephews become ridiculously cute.

And sure, that beauty comes from within. Without a doubt. But it also comes from the hand and eye of a skilled photographer. No doubt about that, either.

Many readers and colleagues have asked me about the fashion spread in the current issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom, shot by LA-based photographer Elizabeth Messina. It is, indeed, a thing of beauty and we’re excited to have it in our magazine. Messina’s first book, The Luminous Portrait is available for preorder on Amazon now (it ships on April 24), and it strikes me that it’s as good a recommendation for soon-to-be-married types as it is for up and coming photographers.

The glow will come naturally, but will the ability to hold your body gracefully? Not all of us are completely at home in front of the camera, but in studying the portrait work of the best wedding shooters, couples should be able to glean angles that will work for them on the big day, and even ideas about what kinds of lighting they like best.

Of course, there are other ways to prepare. Go back through all those award-show images and watch how Rooney Mara holds her arms not in a triangle shape at her waist, but softly in front of her in a sort of relaxed air hug. And how about that grip and grin between Madonna and Andrea Riseborough? Their bodies make a slight V, not a straight plane. And even though Evan Rachel Wood is doing that hand-on-hip thing, she’s also making a pretty sweet S-curve with her body. If there’s one thing the red carpet can teach you, it’s that you really don’t even want to lock your knees and go stiff.

The photographer you hire can teach you a lot, too. Consider booking an engagement session if for no other reason than to practice your moves and work with him or her (or them; many top shooters are husband-and-wife teams) to learn how to meld your styles and come together as a team.

Seattle Wedding Show

You’re invited to our (booth at the) wedding (show) on January 7 & 8.

Inspiration

All I can reveal is that this image is serving as a major inspiration piece for Seattle Met Bride & Groom’s SWS booth.

About once or twice a year, I get to feeling like I’m the one planning a wedding. Sometimes it’s because of an elaborate feature we’re planning, but more often it’s a party that gets me.

This year, it’s the annual Seattle Wedding Show at the Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday January 7 and 8. You can get your tickets here.

It’s all about the booth at a show like this; we—the florists, the DJs, the caterers, the venues, the cake bakers—all want to create a space that you will inspire you. And inspire conversation. I’ll be there all weekend and we definitely want you to come by and say hi.

This time around we’re working with the crazy-talented Steven Moore (who just got married himself), the great resources at ABC Rentals by Cort, and one of the most popular new vendors in town, Vintage Ambiance.

It’s possible that I’m the pickiest “bride” they’ve worked with all year. We’re throwing around ideas on color and trends, inspiration and innovation, and comforting, welcoming environments. Stuff you’re thinking about, too, huh?

So come by and we’ll compare notes. I’m looking forward to it.

“Come wedding #46 who knows but what I can tell you is that eight wedding days in, the nerves still kick in, the butterflies still appear in our tummies and our palms still sweat so we must have something right!” -Lisa

“We even surprise ourselves how well we get on. We spend every waking moment together and live in a Dodge camper van (which isn’t that big) and we don’t fight. We are both very laid back and bicker like any couple but we generally laugh about it and forget it. I am very lucky to have someone as patient as Alex as I can pull the Princess card every now and then but he just lets me have my moment and then we carry on as usual.” -Lisa

The Market made a classic and very pretty autumn wedding—but where would you have had Lisa and Alex wed if you were picking a very-Seattle and world-worthy setting?

Right now you or someone you know is frequently overwhelmed by the thought of just one wedding, but check this out: A few weeks ago, a British couple who are getting married over and over again as they travel around the world came through our town and tied the knot, for the eighth time, in Seattle.

One of their vendors reached out to me via Twitter, I eventually connected with Alex and Lisa, and we had the conversation below. I figured there must be something the rest of you could learn from a couple crazy-in-love enough to travel for two years and say “I do” all across the planet..

WWW: Take us back to the conversation that started it all. What’s the original idea behind this epic wedding trip? You even have something of a brand—this 2 People 1 Life idea—How much of this is about the social media hype and buzz?
Lisa: As soon as we got together three years ago (after knowing each other for ten years) we knew we wanted to travel. We would like to find somewhere else in the world to live so we planned to travel for a year and find that place. We started saving and as time passed we decided we would like to get married someday too. Whilst still planning our trip we started looking at places in the UK to get married before we left. We always like to be a little different but the most unique wedding location we could find as we were looking was the London Eye and it just didn’t quite inspire us…so we decided that as well as looking for somewhere to live we would look for a wedding venue too.

We decided to blog about the places we found so we could share with similar minded people. One morning we were sat at the breakfast table talking about our trip and the plan and it was just like a lightbulb. We looked at each other and Alex said to me, “Why don’t we just do it?” as in, why don’t we have a wedding ceremony everywhere we go? How better to tell people about these great wedding locations all over the world than to gather the people needed to create whatever you want and then blog all about it!

Neither of us have really used social media for any other reason than socialising on Facebook, but as we set off on our travels we started a Twitter account and found that it is a great way to network and meet people around the world before we even arrive. The Seattle wedding was the first one we started to arrange before we arrived and that was mainly through Twitter contacts.

Seattle was your eighth city and eighth wedding. Tell us about a few of the others.
Wedding number one was completely planned by Alex in three weeks and involved 25 local businesses who all gave something including a wedding dress, fish and chips, and photography to name a few. The wedding was in our hometown, Didsbury Manchester, and was a complete surprise to me. I found out about it when he confessed on the day of the wedding which was also the day before we flew to Toronto to begin our journey around the world.

Wedding #2: Quebec in a beautiful Vineyard with a chapel and a heart shaped lake.

Wedding #3: On a rock in Honeymoon Lake in Michigan. The congregation stood in the shallow water around the rock and the pontoon captain held the service from his boat which we pulled as close to the rock as we could.

Wedding #4: In Banff on Horseback.

Wedding #5: Neck Point Beach in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island; the ceremony was held by a member of the First Nations Community there. It was a very traditional ceremony at sunset.

Wedding #6: YVR International Airport in the main terminal. The ceremony was held by Jaeger Mah who is living in the airport for 80 consecutive days and nights to celebrate the airport’s 80th anniversary.

Wedding #7: Hawaii, at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It was a beautiful traditional Hawaiian ceremony held by a Hawaiian Kahu (priest) in front of the dolphin lagoon. After the ceremony we went into the water in our wedding clothes and met the dolphins. From there we had a sunset dinner at the beautiful Buddah Point.

And then, Pike Place Market. The wedding was at the pergola and afterwards we walked the market, Post Alley and to the gum wall for pictures and then enjoyed nachos, pizza, and jugs of ale with the wedding team at Pike Brewery.

What was your favorite thing about the vows you took in Seattle?
Reverend Eric Warn held the ceremony for us under the pergola at the North entrance to the market. We loved the intimacy of the vows and how Eric made it so easy for us to focus on him and each other even though there was so much going on around us. Eric asked us to exchange a single flower to symbolise our love for each other and asked us that “in remembrance of this day and as a reaffirmation of your love and of the vows you have spoken here today, please give each other a single rose each year on your anniversary.” He also asked that when it gets difficult , instead of finding words to express that, to place a single flower on the other person’s pillow to say “I remember our vows and I love you.”

What other vendors were involved in your Seattle celebration? What did you wear?
Charlotte Balbier, a UK designer, very kindly gave me the gown I wore for the Seattle wedding—I have worn it for three other ceremonies.

Diamond Custom Floral made the boutonierre; Modern Mood Design did the bouquet. Jonas Seaman was our photographer; Kelli Bielema of Shindig Events, Tawsha Box Connell of Wedding Preview Event Seattle was so helpful, and BellaUmbrella provided a parasol incase of rain.

Checklist: Bella Bridesmaid, Budget Bride, DIY Bride

Check out Ivy and Aster, save some bucks, create a fantasy flower arrangement.

Three things to put on your calendar for the next couple of weeks:

Where: Marigold and Mint in the Melrose Building

What: Though it’s not billed as a wedding-specific workshop, Marigold and Mint’s fantasy flower fashion class sure looks like a boon for couples who want an otherworldly vibe and at least a little DIY’ing—and, maybe most importantly, a pretty amazing and slightly over-the-top flower girl. (Note: The workshop is open to boys and girls of all ages.) M and M’s flower-farmer owner and her crew will be demonstrating flower cuffs and collars, and playing with color in general. In another’s hands, the words “fantasy flower fashion” could be very scary things. I have full confidence that Katherine Anderson will be doing right by them. And you.

When: Saturday, September 17; there will be three workshops given during three time slots: 11-1, 2-4, and 5-7. The cost is $25 per person and includes all the necessary materials; email info @ marigoldandmint.com or call 206-682-3111 for more information.

************************************

Where: Mt. Baker Community Clubhouse in South Seattle

What: Northwest Budget Bride, a boutique wedding show featuring vendors who won’t break your bank. For example: Calla Bridal, Baked Cakes, Heather Donovan Harpist, and more. The day includes bubbly and bites, makeup sessions, wedding fashion, decor displays, and the opportunity to make some good decisions about vendors for your Big Day.

When: Sunday, September 18 from 11 to 6 (fashion show at 2); tickets are $10. See nwbudgetbride.com for more

*************************************

Where: Bella Bridesmaid

What: A trunk show for Ivy & Aster, a popular dress line for brides and bridesmaids that works for gals who go for modern silhouettes, soft, wearable fabrics, and low-key, on-trend color stories. In addition to lots of options for best friends, sisters, and other attendants, the Belltown bridesmaid specialists always keep a couple of non-trad wedding frocks in their shop, but they don’t actually carry either of Ivy & Aster’s collections. Yet. Maybe after having the full line of bridal and bridesmaid dresses—currently not carried anywhere in this state—in the shop for a few days, that’ll change.

When: Friday, September 23 and Saturday, September 24 during normal business hours; the smart ones will call ahead of time and book an appointment.

Get Hitched Give Hope ’11

Announcing this year’s wedding event to end all wedding events, and an auction lot featuring yours truly.

Email
Auctioning

A few scenes from last year’s party.

Readers of this blog as well as soon-to-be-married folk know that boutique wedding shows—smallish, self-selected groups of vendors gathered in warm, welcoming environments, maybe with a theme or concept—are the way to go. And you could almost go every weekend if you wanted to. There are lots of opportunities to scout, meet, and hire wedding-day vendors.

But none more special than Get Hitched Give Hope. This boutique wedding show is a fundraising auction, a chance to meet and “hire” (more on that in a minute) top tier vendors, and a party. A really great one. This year’s event will be held on October 27 at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Vendors across categories such as photography, dessert, planning, and beauty have donated their services by rolling them into silent and live auction lots. Drink and appetizers in hand, you’ll stroll through the party chatting with these folks and figuring out who’s right for your big day. And you’ll bid appropriately.

But here’s where the great part comes in.

The vendors don’t take the money the receive from your bid. They essentially lend their talents to your celebration for free, and the money you pledged at the auction goes to help make someone else’s dream come true. Literally. This year’s GHGH charity is the Dream Foundation, the first organization aimed at granting wishes for adults facing life-threatening illnesses.

I’ve seen it three years in a row now: the pomp and party of the night combined with the knowledge that your party will be staffed by really amazing, truly generous people and it’ll completely change the final month’s of someone else’s life, well, it’s pretty darn magical.

And for the third year in a row, I’m part of the auction, too.

Brides in need of a seasoned, professional shopper—or perhaps, an unbiased outside opinion—can bid on an all-day boutique crawl with yours truly. The score includes:

-a sweet ride from Rare Form Limo for you, me, and a couple of your best gals
-a fully stocked champagne bin inside
-a pre-planned shopping trip focused on your needs, whether you’re looking for something special for the honeymoon, party dresses for the pre-wedding ramp up, accessories for the big day, lingerie for the big night, or anything else. In other words: Let me figure out where we need to go and what we need to check out—all you have to do is enjoy the ride.
-a stop off at Report Shoes headquarters where you’ll pick out a perfect pair

It’s just a little thing, all things considered, but I’m happy to be included.

Tickets are on-sale now. I hope to see you there.

Slideshow: The Tanseys at home on their wedding. Tips, inspiration, and more from the couple and their photographer.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

WWW: What made you decide to have your wedding at home?
Michele and Ryan: We wanted to share all the hard work we’d done at our house over the past year with our friends and family. We also wanted a relaxed and comfortable environment and to make sure that all of our pets could be there. The financially responsible part of us figured that we should spend our wedding money on something we could use after the wedding not just that day. The bulk of the wedding cost went towards home improvements (paint, new doorknobs, light fixtures, furniture, and decorations), a new deck, and landscaping.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

What was the inspiration for the look and feel of the day?
We love all things vintage and antique, so our theme was Mad Men-inspired with late 50s early 60s attire. All of the decorations from the glasses, silverware, pie plates, chairs, tables, everything and I mean everything was collected by Michele (with a little help from Kaye and Michele’s mom) from Goodwill and Value Village. The wonderful people in the housewares department at the Goodwill on South Lane Street in Seattle knew Michele so well by the end.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

How many guests did you have and do you imagine you would have invited more if you held the party in a larger venue?
We had about 75 guests at our wedding and we probably wouldn’t have invited any more if we’d had the event somewhere else. Obviously the process of choosing who to invite is a difficult one for all couples, but overall I think we didn’t have too much trouble since we knew we wanted to keep it small and intimate.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

For some couples, planning a wedding is enough of a project. Wasn’t it also overwhelming to plan a wedding and fix up the venue?
We nearly bit off more than we could chew. We didn’t do much serious planning until about three months out from our wedding, and we decided to do most everything ourselves. We had to put in a deck, landscape our yard, install light fixtures, retile our bathroom, finish installing trim in a few places, paint a couple rooms, and find new furniture and art. We are so thankful for the help we received. In the months leading up to the wedding we had help from our “Best Man of Honor” Jon, and from Michele’s close friend Kaye who is a wedding planner in Indianapolis. In the few days before the wedding we had most of our family fly in and help fix up the house, bake pies, and set up the tables and chairs.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte
View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

Michele: After the band left there was a group of about twenty of us sitting outside drinking and chatting. We pulled together all the comfy couches and chairs; it is the coolest feeling to be in your yard sitting on indoor furniture. I don’t know who started it but someone said, “Ryan! Wooooh!” and started clapping. Then everyone outside joined it cheering and clapping. “RYAN!” He had the biggest smile on his face, and I knew he was thinking, “I’m the luckiest guy in the world.” He tells me every day. I am so proud of him.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

Tell us you didn’t also make all the food and dessert.
We decided to have brunch catered by Duos Catering. We had bacon, biscuits and gravy, quiche, strata, breakfast panini, fresh fruit, and yogurt. Everything was so good we wish we could have eaten more! For the dessert we had our friends and family bake pies. We had so many pies that we had ten left over after the day was done. As for the drinks, we got two kegs of beer from Georgetown Brewery. We also mixed up a cooler of tequila-spike limeade for the day.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

Ryan: My favorite moments from the day came whenever Michele and I would sneak away to take pictures with our photographer Kristen Tourtillotte. The entire day was such a whirlwind of family and friends, with not as much time with Michele as I would have liked. Stepping out of the party for a few moments meant so much to me and it let me have time to spend with the woman I love so much on such a special day.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

How is photographing a wedding in a home different than taking pictures at a venue?
Tourtillotte: Since there was so much character in the house, taking photos was almost a breeze: It was easier to search for light and negative space. The guests were comfortable with having a camera in their face and were close together rather than spread around a large venue. It allowed me to come up closer and document them in conversation without them noticing so much whereas if I walked up to them from 20 feet away… Guests were just a lot more at ease and thoroughly enjoying themselves. Michele and Ryan didn’t have the traditional events of cake cutting, bouquet toss and the like so the guests conversations weren’t interrupted and they weren’t called to move to a different room to watch traditional wedding events take place.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

Tourtillotte: The way the house was decorated and landscaped reflected who Michele and Ryan are. Creative individuals with an eye for aesthetic beauty and love for antique and charming pieces that have been warmly loved in the past.

View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte
View Slideshow » Photo: Kristen Tourtillotte

Tourtillotte: After having shot plenty of backyard, hotel, gallery, and large venue weddings, there was definitely something very different about this particular home wedding. I think what connected me the most to it was having met with Michele and Ryan a few times in their short planning process and seeing first hand the amount of work they had put into making their nest feel like a home and wanting to engage their friends and family in the home-making process. I think for couples to put their own hard work and labor into creating this type of event is quite the feat. Their guests were able to see this as well and it only created a more welcoming environment and appreciation for the day. Their hospitality was multiplied; guests felt more comfortable and hung around longer.

On June 19th, Ryan and Michele Tansey were married in their Central District home amid an artful collection of vintage decor and an equally inspiring group of friends—most if not all of whom complied with the couple’s Mad Men-era theme and dressed the part.

In the slideshow here, photographer Kristen Tourtillotte of Kristen Marie Photography shares her images of the Tansey’s day, and we talk with Tourtillotte and the new couple about the down-home affair.

Click through the slideshow to find out how the newlyweds pulled off such a stylish wedding (spoiler alert: she’s an interior decorator and together they run Reinspired Home), how photographing in a home can be different than photographing at say, the Four Seasons, and get tips and inspiration for your big or small Big Day.

Cloud Storage, OneNote, and More for Weddings

Companies like MiMedia and Microsoft are catering their apps and tools to fit your big day.

Email
Cloudstorage

Should you store your wedding images here?

Not to spoil the romantic mood, but let’s be honest: There are lots of people who’d like to make some money off of your wedding day.

To wit: Tech companies catering their products to the engaged crowd. We’re calling the trend based on a stack of press releases in our Inbox, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that two new wedding-related riffs on existing techie tools won’t make your pre-and-post wedding life a little easier.

First, consider a wedding planner template from Microsoft OneNote 2010. If you haven’t used OneNote, think of it as a digitized spiral notebook; you can type anywhere, draw shapes and diagrams (seating charts, anyone?), make tables and checklists (his and her to-do’s?), and a lot of other stuff we haven’t tried yet. Notes are easily organized, and the search tool is definitely decent.

OneNote’s wedding template works by importing prearranged tabs, lists and tables into the application, allowing you to easily keep track of venues, vendors, prices, menus, and just about anything else you can think of. Best of all, the template is a free add-on. If you don’t have OneNote (every version of Office 2010 includes it), you can try it free for 60 days.

Think you can squeeze your planning into a two-month period? Sure gives you motivation to try, huh?

Of course, there are many couples for whom an actual real-life wedding planner is a must. Actual humans being so much more responsive, communicative, and, well, capable of making phone calls and meeting you at appointments and offering opinions and so forth.

But there’s no human-replacing when it comes to this next example: cloud storage. You’ve heard the term. It’s like using everyday storage units you’d rent from Seattle Public Storage, only it’s for your digital life. Folks use cloud storage when they run out of space on their own hardware, or if they want to keep something safe from household disasters or computer crashes. Files are copied and whisked away via an outside provider with a broadband internet connection; images, MP3s, documents, whatever are stored on high-security computer servers that are…well, it doesn’t really matter where they are because they’re not on your kitchen table.

Back to your wedding. Most couples would like to keep their wedding photos for as long as they live and then some, and with cloud storage, your wedding media is stored on different servers in different locations simultaneously in case anything at all goes wrong with one of them. Snazzy.

MiMedia.com, a cloud provider, offers seven gigabytes of storage for free, forever. What exactly does that get you? Seven gigs equal less than two hours of HD video, which is nowhere near enough to cover the extent of the reception’s open-bar debauchery. You may need an upgrade sooner than you think, so don’t get too lured in by the “f” word (free, c’mon).

And then there’s the issue of privacy.

A casual search of “privacy” on MiMedia.com yields no results, but the license agreement states in no uncertain terms that as long as you have your files on their servers, they can access and do just about whatever they want to with them. Amazon has a similar clause for their cloud storage solution. Yikes.

For most people and their wedding memories, this would seem to me to be a non-issue. But for sensitive information, artists who rely on copyright for income, and FBI, CIA, and government executives, a real storage unit might be in order. And a padlock.

P.S. – Sorry, Mac users; MiMedia is Windows-only for the time being, but Apple’s iCloud (more music-based, but boasting five gigabytes of free storage) is coming in the fall.

The current issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom is on stands now. You could be in the next issue, if you follow these Real Weddings guidelines.

The new issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom has been out for almost a month now—more than long enough to generate a new round of feverish queries regarding those pages known as Real Weddings.

Here’s what you need to know about getting in to the next issue.

1. Plan the wedding that only you could plan. Don’t worry so much about trends or tradition; do what feels right to you and what will look beautiful and be completely captivating when guests walk into the room. On one hand, consider your wedding a dinner party, the most special and well-produced one you’ve ever thrown. On the other, think about immersive environments that inspire indelible memories.

2. Hire a detail-oriented photographer who will capture the little thoughtful moments, smart and stylish tabletop and decor elements, and the big three: flowers, dessert, and dinner (or breakfast, appetizers, whatever)—not just posed shots. Gather about 25 images that are similar in subject matter to the ones we tend to print in the magazine and online (ie: they illustrate the ceremony, show off the wedding party’s grand style, and point out what was brilliant at the reception: the tables, the printed matter, the favors, the overall venue), and reference our submission guidelines for final instructions. If and when we like what we see, we’ll send the couple a Q and A to complete, and we’ll request a full set of high res images.

3. Get submissions in by October 18. We’ve already received lots of great submissions but we want to make sure we have all the best events to choose from so get your best bets in soon. We only have so many pages for Real Weddings in each issue, and considering how many beautiful weddings were orchestrated in the last year, they do go fast.
