Designer Accessories Sale at Goodwill

Hunt for bracelets and score platforms on March 9 and 10 in the University District.

Email
Katespadeshoes

Among the goods that are being tagged and readied for this year’s Goodwill Accessories Sale: Kate Spade Mary Janes.

One of the major differences between Goodwill’s megapopular Glitter Sale and its upcoming designer accessories sale? Shelves are restocked throughout the weekend so there’s no need to camp out the night before.

The University District Goodwill hosts this yearly event, now approaching its third go-round. On March 9 and 10 from 10 to 8 the thrift store brings out its stock of designer shoes, handbags, jewelry, and men’s items (ties, belts, and the like) for a two-day blowout. We’re told that this year’s loot also includes handpicked vintage apparel.

Every penny of the net proceeds goes to support Goodwill’s community education programs. Ten of their centers around the region, including a Seattle location, offer free classes in basic computer skills, GED preparation, English for nonnative speakers, and retail and customer service. This real-world training gives low-income individuals job skills to help them become economically self-sufficient.

So tuck that in the Marc Jacobs clutch you score, and keep the organization in mind when you get down to spring cleaning.

Special Sales

Shop It: Baby and Co.’s Closet Sale

Save the date for a warehouse sale and consignment store-like pop-up from some of the most stylish and worldly women in Seattle.

Email
Lilith_jacket

A recent look from the French line Lilith gives you an idea of the directional, well-cut, easy-to-wear, earthy but urban aesthetic on offer at the Baby and Co. Closet Sale. August 11–14.

Where: 2004 First Ave, Seattle, 98101. (Bonus points if you can tell us what Japanese-inspired ‘80s-errific women’s shop used to be in this space.)

What: There are a number of shop owners around town who will come to your home and help you clean out your closet (all the better to help you fill it back up), but Baby and Co.’s Jill Donnelly takes it one step further.

This is the third year that Donnelly has hosted a pop-up shop based, more or less, on a consignment model. She’s visited the well-stocked (over-stocked?) closets of some of her best clients, and taken neatly packaged offerings from those who do their own wardrobe editing, and names like Lanvin, Marni, and Comme des Garcons are being used to describe the booty.

I’m not too shy to say that I blew my month’s shopping budget and more at last year’s sale, and as much of a boon as it was to encounter those favorite and exclusive lines, I also loved discovering pieces by small Parisian lines and Italian-made shoes. Donnelly’s crew are world travelers, and the sale reflects that in literal and figurative ways.

In addition to the excellent new-to-you items, you’ll find past season merchandise from the French line Lilith, one of Donnelly’s favorites. So, add to the consignment vibe a warehouse sale kind of thing, and start socking aside some spending money now.

When: The sale kicks off on Thursday, August 11 from 11 to 6 and continues until Sunday, August 14.
CASH ONLY
Park at the Macy’s garage at 3rd and Stewart and bring your ticket to the sale to receive a voucher for $3 parking for two hours.

End of summer designer sale at Betty Lin.

Because they operate on a different retail model (they’re basically an outlet; a sort of clearing house for some of the top boutiques in the country), Betty Lin in Pioneer Square marks down their end-of-season merchandise on a slightly different schedule.

So while shops all over the city are winding down their sales (public service announcement: the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is over on August 1), this little medley of designer dresses and favorite-label separates is just beginning.

Markdowns at Betty Lin went live today, Thursday July 28; they’ll be available as long as the past-season merchandise is.

Sonic Boom Leaving the Hill

Recent closures in the Melrose Market have us asking, What’s up with retail on Capitol Hill?

Email
Sonic-boom-records-capitol-hill

Melrose Market Sonic Boom, soon-to-have RIP status.

Sonic Boom’s closing up shop on Capitol Hill. Thank the shopping gods the Ballard branch isn’t too far away.

The music emporium is the second store in the Melrose Market area to shutter in recent times; Velouria boutique—coincidentally owned by Tes De Luna, wife of SB owner Joseph Hughes—closed late last year. At present, the ultramodern shopping mall has a number of vacant storefronts. Everyone and their uncle were psyched when the Melrose Market went up; it’s a bummer to see the retail aspect falter a bit.

Hughes cited a decline in community support for small retailers, and especially for music sales. (Some folks wanted to start WWIII over his remark to Seattle Weekly that the area’s younger demographic tends to spend money on drinks, not records. C’mon people, the comment is hardly shocking! Remember your twenties?) Yet other nearby store owners are happy with the hopping business. “It all seems pretty vibrant” notes Katherine Anderson, purveyor of organic flowers and home goods at Marigold and Mint.

Whether closing up or staying on, shop-owners share a common concern: sky-high rent. For Sonic Boom, steep rent was a major factor in closing. Same goes for Velouria—well, that, and De Luna had a baby. (Her Ballard location remains a classic.) At Marigold and Mint—likewise two other nearby vendors who didn’t want to go on record—the petite square footage is a large part of their success: “Retail only works here because of the small footprint,” says Anderson.

You probably can’t do much about the rent prices, but Hughes posted a good challenge for Seattleites on the Sonic Boom website: “Whether it’s clothes, music, groceries, shoes, furniture, or gifts,” he says, “support the stores you enjoy shopping at. That’s the best way to let them know you care about what they do.” It’s a good practice, one we’ve been advocating for two years now.

So get to it! You can shop Sonic Boom on the Hill until September 5—sales have already started with 15 percent off all merchandise.

Party Week at Horseshoe Boutique

The Ballard boutique celebrates its fifth anniversary with Toms shoes, Butter London, big sales, and you.

Email
5-toms1004-h

It’s a blank canvas…for your feet! Color some Tom’s and celebrate Horseshoe’s fifth birthday.

“I’ve always had a thing for horseshoes,” says Jill Andersen explaining the name of her Ballard boutique. “I grew up in Nebraska and Colorado and have an affinity for early Americana; plus, there’s the lucky charm aspect.” She’s certainly feeling fortunate right now: it’s her store’s fifth anniversary this month. “You survive your first year, the second year is better, then you see all this growth. It makes you want to get up and come to work,” remarks Andersen.

Some stores, like some people, let birthdays go by with little fanfare. For others, one party isn’t enough, so they throw a whole suite of celebrations.

The main event in a string of four is a Style Your Sole Toms fete on June 15. After buying white Toms, you can hire one of three local artists to decorate your purchase for $10. Paint supplies will also be on hand if you want to get crafty and design your own. Amidst cake, champagne, and serious sales, they’re also raffling off a Prairie Underground sweatshirt and other goodies.

On June 12 there’s the Annual Stockroom Sale. Arriving early is recommended: last year, so many shoppers braved the freezing May weather, that the line stretched out into the back alley.

On June 17, consider the Happy Hour Butter Party, where you can relax with a mini mani-pedi courtesy of Butter London beauty products, sip some bubbly, or enter your name to win Butter by Nadia’s Signature Dress in Little Red Stripe. “It’s going to be really, really girly,” notes Kruger.

June 21 marks the launch party for Teu Swimwear, a line by Tininha Silver which will be sold exclusively at Horseshoe. With any luck, bathing suit weather will be on the horizon by then.

As if Andersen doesn’t have enough on her plate, she’s planning the debut of her new online store to coincide with the celebrations.

“For us, the thought of launching the website on the day we opened five years ago is perfect. It’s the second shop.”
