Sale of the Week: Equal Opportunity

Jack Straw’s first big sale since the shop added a women’s department begins Friday

The patron saint of Jack Straw: Bob Dylan

Jack Straw owner John Richards opened his shop not quite two years ago with the idea that men look best when they’ve been wearing the same impeccably made modern classics for like, ever. Yes, he meant that their Issey Miyake suit jackets should be worn as long as their mortgages, but he also meant that they could and should wear those jackets every day of those thirty-year ARMs. He likes clothes to be beautiful, and totally worn-in.

This spring, that theory – more or less – was applied to the fairer sex. In March, a women’s department opened in the back, prominently featuring the work of window designer Maresa Patterson. In addition to Patterson’s sweetly nostalgic yet totally modern and innovative line, Stella Love, there was a drop-dead gorgeous rack of ceremonial garb for urban tribeswomen courtesy of Dries Van Noten. The collection grew, and now Jack Straw is one of those coed date-night shopping experiences that beats the pants off of a fleeting, here-now-gone-already brunch-and-a-movie any day.

But you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Grab your best gal or your favorite guy and get ready for Jack Straw’s biggest sale bash since going equal opportunity. Beginning this Friday June 4 save up to 70 percent on Dries, Martin Margiela, Paul Smith, and Issey Miyake for him, and Dries, Sofie D’Hoore, Vroom, and Yoshi Kondo for her.

Charlotte

I nominate Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birken, as Jack Straw’s female patron saint

Fall/Winter markdowns in the neighborhood by the bay (Elliott, that is)

This is what is meant by “new classics;” a runway look from F/W 09 Dries Van Noten, one of the lines on sale at Jack Straw

The cure for postholiday ennui: Postholiday sales. Lucky for you, the next few weeks will see plenty of ’em.

Not sure what it is about West Edge retailers, but they’re darn good at getting word out. Having received notes from the handful below regarding their markdowns, we’ll start there, with a critical mass of savings on edgy but wearable style down between Pio Square and Downtown on Western and First Avenues. Consider making a day or a lunch hour out of it.

(For snacks along the way, I recommend the Spanish Table and/or Paris Grocery; for warm beverages, Stella Caffe or Fonte Coffee, see #6 here)

Totokaelo: 30% off all future-perfect fall clothing, shoes, and accessories (Acne, A.P.C., Vanessa Bruno, Maison Martin Margiela)

Jack Straw: 40-50% off all new classic fall looks for him (Issey Miyake, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Note, more) – and check out the Sin Bin (it’s a sin if you don’t buy it) for items marked 75% off

The Finerie: 25-75% off most current season merchandise including evening wear by the once-local designer Madina Vadache

A Mano: The bi-annual sale began on Saturday; 30% off all European and artisan-made fall/winter boots, shoes, bags, and accessories

Far 4: 10-30% off heirloom and modern china, porcelain, table and home ware and lifestyle accessories

Stay tuned for more sales in the days to come

At Jack Straw, the men’s Italian-made and otherwise designer duds are not meant to be handled with care. Co-owner John Richards urges you to sleep in Comme des Garcons jackets and roll around in the hay in Dries Van Noten for years to come. So instead of looking at the pieces for sale—and currently on sale—in his First Ave shop as elements of a soon-to-end season or a modern trend that’ll be over by the time the days start getting short again, you might look at them as friends you’ll have for the rest of your life.

Kind of puts a spin on marked-down spring and summer jackets, pants, and button-downs, doesn’t it? Especially since this heat wave is already making the current quarter feel nice and long. Chances are you’ll have cause to pull on linen pants and lightweight jackets straight through the end of September—and, following John Richards’ lead, through every September after that.

Wear-forever separates are marked at 40 to 50% off, (and they’ll stay there until they’re gone) and fall looks are arriving daily. Ask John to show you his current favorite piece, an Ann Demeulemeester hoodie that elevates the status of the sweatshirt with smart detailing and perfect proportions.
