Retail Workshop

Winter Crowns at Marigold and Mint

Get crafty with the season on Monday, December 19.

Where: Marigold and Mint

What: Shop owner and flower coaxer Katherine Anderson and Britain-born, Seattle-based fashion illustrator Izzie Klingels (she created the cover of Seattle Met’s Fashion’s Night Out guide) team up for a winter crown-making workshop at Melrose Market’s sweetest little botanicals and gift shop.

The gals are on quite a roll over there; this DIY opportunity is quick on the heels of a Halloween mask class. We bet they’ll dream up something special around mid-February, too…

Participants can take 10 percent off anything in the store while they’re there at the workshop.

When: Monday, December 19; kids over 5 are welcome from 11:30 to 1, the adult session is 6 to 8. Cost of the workshop is $30 per person, all materials—evergreen boughs, winter berries, bright blossoms—are included.

The flip side of Wildfox’s “Cabin Girl” sweater at Ketch. It’s safe to say you could fit some serious layers underneath there, and have fun doing it.

At Les Amis, the simplicity and striking color of an Inhabit cardigan offers an easy punch for outfits that just aren’t quite there.

Inspired by traditional knits, this Ulla Johnson sweater has mid-length sleeves; layer it with a long sleeved tee-shirt or do some pattern mixing with a button-down plaid.

Margaret O’Leary has you covered with classic and timeless knits, many in the perfect lightweight cashmere that’s adaptable to four seasons of Seattle cool. Pictured here is the herringbone cardigan layered over the crew cardigan. Go ahead, wear a sweater over a sweater.

Another sweater-over-sweater look; Margaret O’Leary’s “Diva Wrap” over the stretch cashmere scrunch sweater. Turtlenecks are the thing these days, have you heard? Or maybe you’ve seen?

Not to overstate the obvious, but it sure is cold out there.

Those who survive Seattle in style do so in layers, so we shopped the city’s boutiques in search of sweaters that’ll keep you warm enough to go out looking cool.

Stop shivering already and check out our slideshow for five shops full of cozy knits in all shapes and sizes.

Holiday Shopping

Neiman Marcus Features Rainier Yurts

The luxury department store teams up with a hundred-year-old Seattle company for its holiday catalog.

It’s been two years since Neiman Marcus rolled into town, so by now you’re probably familiar with their yearly holiday catalog—complete with a handful of totally over-the-top gift ideas. We’re not talking about the high-ticket Chanel watches and cut-crystal glassware that appears in other mega-retailers catalogs, we’re talking about $250,000 custom-made speedboats. And yurts.

This year’s Christmas Book (if the Houston-based brand hasn’t yet folded under the PC “holiday” pressure, they probably never will) allows customers to order a $75,000, 12-foot-5-inch tall, 18-foot diameter tent from Seattle’s Rainier Yurts.

The South-End structure builders have been doing business since the Alaskan Gold Rush days, so they’re probably not strangers to big purses, but I’m not sure they’ve ever collaborated with luxury pillow maker Rebecca Vizard or New Orleans’s chandelier artisan, Julie Neill.

Yes, your yurt comes with antique embroidery, crystal-accented lighting, linen wall coverings, and a color scheme meant to evoke “the bubbles of a warm, soothing bath.” Installation is included, and for every backyard retreat (they call them “Dream Follys” …) that’s sold, NM will donate $5,000 to breast cancer research.
