Floral, stationary, and rental companies collaborated to create a dream-worthy scene.

Models dressed in finery from Belle Reve swished and swayed through the crowds throughout the evening; one lucky bidder won the dress of her choice from the Bellevue bridal salon.

Aside from being a kick*&^ fundraiser, Get Hitched is two things: a chance to mingle and meet with the wedding vendors assembled for the event (pictured here, the gals from Junebug), and a chance to win their goods— in both silent and live auctions.

During the silent auction portion of the evening, folks enjoyed cocktails and made connections. And not a soul in attendance missed this gal, who was dressed in the gown that La Belle Reve’s owner designed and wore to her own celebration.

Representatives from this event’s beneficiaries were particularly great this time around. Hearing about one particular young woman’s resolve made all the difference. As she laughed through her tears and told her story, we all understood why we were there. Money raised goes directly to foundations who grant wishes for those living with potentially fatal cancer and other conditions.

At the end of the evening, when the numbers were crunched, a real party broke out. You better believe that Seattle’s best party throwers are also Seattle’s best party people.

Besting last year’s total by more than 20 grand, the recent Get Hitched Give Hope gala raised a whopping $85,000 for the Dream Foundation, the event’s primary benefactor, and the Young Survivor’s Coalition, who will also see the benefits of those funds.

While that’s a hugely gratifying number and speaks volumes about everyone involved, it’s also important to note that many a Seattle bride-and-groom got their dreams fulfilled that night, too.

There were auction bidders-n-winners for bridesmaid bouquets, wedding planning, hair and makeup design, and much more; including a guided, chauffeured shopping trip with yours truly. How much did that last one go for? Click through the slideshow to find out.

Thanks to everyone who was there—including all those dudes who came out this year. Grooms forever! And big love and many, many thanks to the organizers and sponsors of this important and excellent yearly event. We couldn’t be more honored to be involved.

Giveaway: Get Hitched Give Hope

Imagine yourself winning two tickets to the October 27 wedding gala.

Email
Dolcecanlis01

Stationery by Dolce Designs is one of the things you could score when you go—for free!—to Get Hitched Give Hope.

Picture it: a crisp October night, you and the person you’re psyched to spend the remainder of eternity with walk in to the Four Seasons for Get Hitched Give Hope, just as some fellow in white gloves puts a glass of champagne under your nose and another appears with some gorgeous little canapés.

The two of you are looking cocktail-party cool, feeling can’t-wait-for-the-big-day fine, and it seems like everyone in the room is too. Like they really can’t wait for your big day.

You stroll the silent auction items and notice a practically bid-free page corresponding to a vendor whose services you’ve talked about adding to your wedding-day affairs. The three of you start chatting, and while your sig other steps away to say hi to a friend, you quickly jot down your auction number and politely say goodbye, knowing luck and karma are always on your side where sweet surprises are involved.

More champagne, more great bites, followed by great sweet bites, more socializing, more opportune moments and serendipitous crossing of paths.

During the live auction, you score the very photographer you had on your dream team list from the get-go, and you get seduced by an extra or two, because the deal was so good, and because the extra-double-happiness factor of the charitable giving aspect just makes love multiply.

There’s even that moment in the live auction when you consider bidding on me. Yeah, me. But someone else scoops ya. Ah, well.

Now picture this: You got in for free.

We’re giving away one set of two free tickets to the wedding event of the year.

To win entry to the October 27 good time, all you need is send an email—use the “email the editor” link to the right of this post in the “About this blog” box—to me with I WANT TO BE A GIVER in the subject line. (One email per reader please; multiple emails will be disqualified, as will entries that don’t adhere to these directions.) Email must be received by Wednesday, October 12 at 5.

In the body of the email give your first and last name, and a phone number and email where you can be reached next week.

Names will be copied onto little slips of paper just like in third grade and one lucky set of winners will be ceremoniously drawn from a hat. Random.org is fun and all, but sometimes it’s more fun to be old-fashioned.

We’ll select one winner—he or she will claim two tickets—on Thursday, October 13 at 5, and contact them that evening. Your tickets will be waiting for you at Will Call on the night of the event, Thursday, October 27.

Get Hitched Give Hope ’11

Announcing this year’s wedding event to end all wedding events, and an auction lot featuring yours truly.

Email
Auctioning

A few scenes from last year’s party.

Readers of this blog as well as soon-to-be-married folk know that boutique wedding shows—smallish, self-selected groups of vendors gathered in warm, welcoming environments, maybe with a theme or concept—are the way to go. And you could almost go every weekend if you wanted to. There are lots of opportunities to scout, meet, and hire wedding-day vendors.

But none more special than Get Hitched Give Hope. This boutique wedding show is a fundraising auction, a chance to meet and “hire” (more on that in a minute) top tier vendors, and a party. A really great one. This year’s event will be held on October 27 at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Vendors across categories such as photography, dessert, planning, and beauty have donated their services by rolling them into silent and live auction lots. Drink and appetizers in hand, you’ll stroll through the party chatting with these folks and figuring out who’s right for your big day. And you’ll bid appropriately.

But here’s where the great part comes in.

The vendors don’t take the money the receive from your bid. They essentially lend their talents to your celebration for free, and the money you pledged at the auction goes to help make someone else’s dream come true. Literally. This year’s GHGH charity is the Dream Foundation, the first organization aimed at granting wishes for adults facing life-threatening illnesses.

I’ve seen it three years in a row now: the pomp and party of the night combined with the knowledge that your party will be staffed by really amazing, truly generous people and it’ll completely change the final month’s of someone else’s life, well, it’s pretty darn magical.

And for the third year in a row, I’m part of the auction, too.

Brides in need of a seasoned, professional shopper—or perhaps, an unbiased outside opinion—can bid on an all-day boutique crawl with yours truly. The score includes:

-a sweet ride from Rare Form Limo for you, me, and a couple of your best gals
-a fully stocked champagne bin inside
-a pre-planned shopping trip focused on your needs, whether you’re looking for something special for the honeymoon, party dresses for the pre-wedding ramp up, accessories for the big day, lingerie for the big night, or anything else. In other words: Let me figure out where we need to go and what we need to check out—all you have to do is enjoy the ride.
-a stop off at Report Shoes headquarters where you’ll pick out a perfect pair

It’s just a little thing, all things considered, but I’m happy to be included.

Tickets are on-sale now. I hope to see you there.

Party Report: Get Hitched Give Hope ’10

A whopping $64,000 raised at this year’s get-a-little-give-a-little (or give-a-lot-get-a-lot, depending) gala.

Great silent auction items (dinner for two at Palisade, a custom wedding invite suite from Ephemera), super fun raffle prizes (a wine party from Januik Novelty Hill), and a really exciting live auction hour (one of the modeled gowns from La Belle Reve, a bachelor party package at Hotel 1000) allowed the amazing Get Hitched Give Hope team to raise a whopping $64,000 that will be used to grant wishes for stage four metastatic breast cancer patients.

View Slideshow » Photo: La Vie Photography

You had to admire the energy of Movin’ 92.5’s Brooke (white dress) and Kel (not pictured here), who emceed the event, and you really had to admire the spirit of Brenda Chovanak (pink dress) from The Making Memories Breast Cancer Foundation. Chovnak spoke about how wishes are granted and how many dollars are needed to grant each wish. At which point, it became much easier to raise your auction number for a Tiffany necklace, or a no-strings-attached $50 donation.

View Slideshow » Photo: La Vie Photography

A commonly overheard comment at the event was, “It’s beautiful here!” Guests and sponsors alike were referring not just to the venue, the Four Seasons (which really is beautiful, as is its view of Elliott Bay), but the elegant and immersive environment (thanks to a slew of talents such as Aria Style and paper artist Celeste Cooning) and the delicious and elegant desserts from Tallant House, Radical Cupcake, New Renaissance Cakes, and others.

I love these photos of the amazing Get Hitched Give Hope team and a smattering of sponsors. If you’re shopping for a wedding vendor there is no smarter place to start than the organizers of the event and the folks who donate to it. If they give this much to women and men they don’t even know, imagine what they’ll do for you.

Okay, yeah. This one needs an explanation. That’s GHGH’s Barbie Hull on top. She’s an amazing event photographer, a wonderful kook (I totally mean that with love), and a proponent of the face-down pose, which started innocently enough but is now a bonafide cultural phenomenon.

There was a lot of love in the room. Tons of it. This year’s Get Hitched Give Hope had a new location, the downtown Four Seasons, and a new attitude: Never mind the economy, let’s party.

500 guests (that’d be engaged folks; shout out to all the dudes who were there — you know who you are) and 100 sponsors rallied around the needs of stage four metastatic breast cancer patients and their own upcoming good times and managed to bring in $64,000.

The story’s here in the slideshow, thanks to the ever-awesome images of La Vie Photography.

As promised, I notified the winners Tuesday evening, so if you didn’t hear from me, that means — what are you waiting for?you better jump on the GHGH site and buy some tickets. Online sales end today, though there may be some available at the door on Thursday — if they’re not sold out.

Here’s another chance to win great stuff: Herban Feast wants you to get to their Facebook page and post a picture that illustrates what sustainability means to you. The two pictures that get the most likes will receive a CSA membership for the June thru September 2011 season from Willie Greens Organic Farm. You have until November 5 at 5p to get your image up.

The Herban Feast folks say this is just the first in a series of three socially networked contest bonanzas aimed at socially savvy and food-focused couples-to-be so stay tuned for news of more great giveaways.

Oh and while we’re on the subject of social networks: There remain another couple weeks to sign up for the Get Engaged Tour at the Fairmont Olympic. How’s your 140-character Twitter-speak? And that blog you were going to start? Be there.

Save the Date: Get Hitched, Give Hope

Be a giver: Get your tickets now for the Oct 28 event, and get ready to give a lot and get a lot.

Turnbullazzura_photography_2-1024x682

One of this year’s Get Hitched Give Hope vendors is Timeless Weddings, who embroider classic, lovely veils, linens, handkerchiefs, and more.

Where: Downtown’s Four Seasons

What: Get Hitched, Give Hope is, at its heart, a wedding show — though really, considering the crew that throws it, a wedding party — in which great vendors gather in a gorgeous room and give couples the opportunity for face-to-face interaction and a real-world, real-time experience of their experience, their talents, their craft, and their specialties. For a list of the premier beauty, photography, floral, decor, planning, paperie, and more wedding professionals at your disposal at this year’s GHGH, slide over here to their vendors page.

But GHGH is not just about you, and it’s not just about the vendors. It’s about giving stage four breast cancer patients a chance to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience before their life on earth is over. Area vendors have agreed to donate their goods and services; you bid on them, via a series of silent and live auctions, and the money goes to the women who need it most. GHGH organizers are hoping to raise $50,000 this year; all of which will go to the Making Memories Foundation. It takes about $4k to make one dream come true — a first-ever family vacation to Hawaii, a wedding she wasn’t sure she’d get to have — and this year, the Seattle dreammakers who have pooled their resources to make this happen are hoping to make those things happen for twelve women.

By way of illustration: I just got a gorgeous Real Wedding submission from a photographer who donated her services at last year’s event. A lucky bride “bought” the photography package that night with a donation to the worthwhile charity (money she would spent anyway, hiring a shooter). The images are fantastic, due in no small part I’m sure to the underlying bond shared between the bride and her photographer; they knew that they were in it together all day long not just in pursuit of gorgeous photographic memories, but for a greater cause, as well. It’s really pretty amazing stuff.

Bottom line: Your dream happens in the most beautiful and meaningful way — and someone else’s dream comes to life in a truly special and singular way, also. And, you got to go to a really fun party.

So you’re saving the date, right? Be sure to check in on the GHGH blog, too; there are some pretty great run-up happenings before the big event — for example: an online jewelry trunk show from Stella & Dot; 25% of all purchases will be donated to GHGH.

When: October 28; tickets start at $35

I Flipped For It

For guest favors and a good time, call Flipped Out Productions

Inside

Page 1: A great wedding favor idea

The totals have been tallied from last week’s Get Hitched Give Hope; a whopping 35k was raised, and many Seattle-area couples made great matches with just the right vendors. Among the vendors supporting the cause and going beyond the beyond to capture clients and share their talents was Flipped Out Productions. I totally flipped for them — as did everyone else.

Here’s the deal: You and your best friend or your Uncle Dave or the guy you’ve only been dating for two weeks but oh what the heck, bring him to your sister’s officemate’s roommate’s wedding anyway dig into a box full of props — feather boas, silly signs, blow-up saxophones, giant sunglasses — (or not) and then step in front of a video camera and prepare for action. For five seconds – yep, just five seconds – you generally act a fool and forget how cool you are.

Next, you go get another peach-colored cocktail from the bar, run into some more friends, then return to the Flipped Out Booth where owner Josh Hershfield and his crew have made still images from the five-second video, printed them out, and bound them in a little flip-book.

Then, you totally flip out again. Because you’re just that cute in stop-motion, no matter how cool you are.

Here’s a little little short video of a flip book starring me and Dixie Duncan, SMB&G’s star sales and marketing wiz. Since we approach the magazine from different sides, Dixie and I don’t really work together, which means we have more fun having fun together. As our flip book clearly shows.

I brought a recently engaged girlfriend (she asked him so there you go) to GHGH with me and we made a flip book, too. (I think everyone there starred in at least two. They. are. addictive.) After flipping through it I immediately got all up in her business insisting that this is what she and her to-be need for guest favors at their wedding next summer. I’ve tried not to push too much “professional advice” in her face but everyone at GHGH was having so much fun in the booth — and with the finished product, that you just can’t help but want to share the experience with 200 of your nearest and dearest.

Front_cover

You give the Flipped Out folks a design to use for the front and back cover and they’ll wrap it around each of the flip books at your event.

I’m sorta considering getting married again just so I can hire these guys. Well, okay maybe not but look — if you opt for this fun and memorable guest favor at your next big shindig — whether it’s a wedding, a birthday, or a holiday party, let me know, k? I’d love to come crash it. And make another flip book.

Shannon

Shannon’s shoes, and Shannon’s sweet bee ring.

A few weeks ago, we talked about Get Hitched Give Hope (see second item). We’re one week and a day from the big event, (read: get your ticket now) and, as is typical a week before any big event, we’re all thinking about what to wear. We? Barbie, Eliza, Kaycee, Wendi, Laurel, Shannon, and Holly-Kate, — aka, the aforeblogged awesome and amazing wedding industry whizzes with the time, energy, dedication, and passion to throw this party, fundraiser, and wedding planning event.

They’ve each sent me a picture or two of outfit elements that they’re sure about; the pieces they know they want to build on. You have to start somewhere. Working from those elements, I’m about to tell them not what not to wear (never seen it, never will) but what seems to me to be just the thing. Right here. So here goes.

Those are Shannon’s shoes up there in the corner, and the sweet ring she wants to sport. I like the idea of starting with accessories; so many women do it — you either know that this is the night I can wear those high sexy heels, or you know, oh, no, it’s flat boots or I’m staying home in front of the TV.

Shannon, I’m thinking lets throw more animal prints into this look. I’m in print-overload this season. The other day I had no fewer than five patterns on my body, and today I have ethnic-ish printed leggings under my winter-floral dress. How about something like this Diane von Furstenberg one-shoulder velvet cheetah dress. Hot!

Not sure about the sac-shape? (I’m sure; I love it) There are about a million and four animal-print wrap dresses out there right now; here’s one at Neiman-Marcus. Keep in mind: You’d want a slinky blend to match the mood of the party, and to counter the somewhat casual ease of the wrap shape.

Nude fishnets, please? Or, with the velvet DVF, totally opaque black hose. Add a big chunky gold chain and you’re, well, golden.

Kaycee, you’re up. I love that you’re starting with jewels here. You obviously have a gorgeous collection of gems and iced-out goodies, and it’s smart to jump on any opportunity to show them off. I love layering these kinds of pieces (and to that end: quite frankly, I think J Crew has been copying me), and I absolutely love the coppers and rose-golds.

Kaycee

Here’s what Kaycee knows: The bling is the thing.

May I direct you to the Merge blog? These looks here by Nuh Novackhett would be perfect compliments to your pink-toned metals. You’d want to bring that kind of look together with opaque black hose, and strong, patent-leather black heel that’ll stand up to your bling.

Alternately, I like something simple and taupe with your accessories. Isn’t this pretty? Neutrals have never been more gorgeous, and less … neutral. Yes, I know, it’s cost-prohibitive. Yikes. And anyway, any actual shopping will be done locally, of course. We’re just dreaming here, and coming up with ideas you can take with you as you shop your closet.

Okay. Wendi. Your turn. Smart lady, you’ve selected an asymmetrical LBD. A sound investment. You can go in so many directions with this.

Is there a little high-heeled shoe-boot you’d like to pair with this? Ala the crazy-cute Alexa Chung? I love the proportion play here; short dress, shortie boot.

Wendi_2_

A very current LBD for Wendi.

The thing I love about black dresses though, is the opportunity they offer in terms of adding color. I loved colored tights, and a bright bold shoe. Start with the shoe — do you have an electric blue heel? A deep royal purple T-strap in suede? Once you select the colorful footwear, a contrasting tight or hose in the same color family (yellow … did someone say bumblebee yellow…) is an inexpensive way to make the look feel that much more new.

Most one-shoulder dresses aren’t really going to take a necklace. They’ll get confused and it just won’t work. Consider that a word of warning, and permission to go for broke with a big chandelier earring. Maybe a bangle too. And a smart black satin clutch.

Barbie! Where you at? Oh right. There you go with that super sexy LBD and the pearls. Very Gossip Girl-meets-Sex in the City.

Barbie

The beginnings of Barbie’s pearls and lace look.

I think what you want to do with this already-almost-perfect look is add some textured hose. The pearls aren’t gonna let you go for a ton of color ala Wendi’s look, so add interest with the great hosiery patterns that are all over town. I like these by Betsey Johnson just fine, and you definitely want to check out the new Wolford shop at the Bravern. The Austrian company is a premiere source for gorgeous, luxe legwear.

Also: pretty peep-toe heels in black satin. Delicious.

You’ll probably want to get some color in, and for my money, the color to get in is a deep, rich magenta. Do it with a wrap, or do it with a clutch. And definitely do with a super-hot three-free manicure.

Who’s the lady in red? Laurel! I’m cheating here, because I know you’ll rock a fascinator at the uh … drop of a hat but this is the time, this is the place, and this is the dress. You’ll definitely want to try Violet Magpie’s collection; I know they have some holiday items coming out soon. Give Jen a call and see if you can get in on that!

Laurel

Laurel’s seeing red.

As you probably know by now, I’m the type to add more to more. And I think the pomp of a feathery cap or little cage veil calls for some sort of brooch or pin, too, and the waist of this dress can really take a pop of something. Rhinestone Rosie has gobs of that sort of thing, or how about an investment in an amazing antique from Isadora’s?

Shoes: I’d love to see something luxe and really colorful. A vivid magenta? Deep purple? Maybe a little of both? Check Posh on Main.

I love these pale gray heels that Eliza has picked out — and the pretty, pearly drop earrings. The gray shoes, on their own, could do just about anything, but paired with the cool-toned earrings, we have a more specific course charted for us.

Eliza

Shades of gray for Eliza.

I love that almost-black plum color with these shades, and then that whole black-and-white thing is totally in play as well.

Gray on gray on gray on gray would be fun, too. And ouch. Just for inspiration, look at this. Give it some shimmery, silvery eyeshadow and plum lip. Double ouch.

Sort of similarly, you could toss a bunch of metallic shades in a pile and go to town. Eliza, you could rock this. Just let Anna Dello Russo (Vogue Nippon’s ed-at-large) be your gilded inspiration.

On the other hand, navy. When black doesn’t feel up to being black, it’s navy. And I love it when that happens.

And finally, Holly-Kate. Those are great pieces, tons of possibilities. The first thing that comes to mind is that we’re going to want to elevate the scale of the tan shoe with something pretty fantastic, however. I bet you’re up for that.

Holly-kate

Holly-Kate’s autumn-to-winter colors.

The colors are great for a late-October event. You can get in some warm autumn hues and inch toward the rich, dark winter colors too. I like the idea of a really deep red with these pieces. Not an firetruck red, but either a deep, ruddy brick red or a red with some orange in it.

You’ll probably want to look for silk jerseys and similar fabrics because, again, you’ll be balancing the potentially casual vibe of the shoe.

For example, I love the emerald green of this dress with that beautiful lavender-y purple necklace, but the fabric is wrong for the shoe. If you went with something silk, you’d want the shape and cut and general feel to be somewhat carefree and oh this old thing? — kinda in line with something like this.

Ladies, I do hope this helps because what you all do to help is just phenomenal. I’m proud to know you all and humbled to have had this opportunity to assist you as you dress for what will definitely be a successful event.

One last note about the shopping here it’d be great if all my fav local boutiques could catalog all their stock online, but of course, that’s a lot of work. It would also be great if there were two of me, and twice as many hours in the day. If so, I’d take my camera to all those places and photograph locally available looks. Failing all that: Go see for yourselves, perhaps referencing this piece from last year on shops with great party dresses (tho sadly, Jeri Rice is closed now).

Wait. Oh, man. I just realized something: I have no idea what I’m going to wear.

5g2-young-

This thing has been floating around the internet forever and no one knows who to credit anymore. Probably young Anna’s mum or dad.

Four fashion, style, and goodwill events to put on the calendar now, while you’re thinking about it.

++*Friday, Oct 2* One week from today, the Seattle debut of The September Issue, or, the scrapped title, The Devil Sure Does Wear a Lot of Abstracted Floral Print Sleeveless Sheath Dresses. You won’t read fashion mags, or any mags, the same way after spending a few hours with Ms. Wintour and that poor maligned yet oddly triumphant Grace Coddington. That’s our pal the Vogue chief-ed over there. It appears she’s always favored bangs.

++*Thursday, Oct 29* The second annual Get Hitched Give Hope auction. If you or someone you know is getting married any time soon, buy tickets now for this Making Memories Foundation fundraiser/great party. Last year I watched couples and friend-packs bid on goods and services from some of the best Seattle vendors while sipping great cocktails and enjoying delicious snacks and desserts inside that amazingly historic and beautiful dome at the Arctic Club Hotel. They were, simultaneously, having an entirely ridiculously great all-out super good time. I was sort of amazed by how much fun was had, but then again, if you’re not having an entirely ridiculously great all-out super good time preparing for your wedding, you’re not doing it right.

Header_01

And here’s the thing: the team running this thing puts fun and fundraising on the same plane. ++*Saturday + Sunday Oct 24 and 25* 7th annual Closet Treasures Sale, a fundraiser for the much loved and respected Dress for Success program. The proceeds from the sales of donated vintage and designer fashion help promote economic independence for women in the midst of hard times.

++*Saturday + Sunday Nov 14 and 15* The Seattle Goodwill Glitter Sale. People are nutty about this thing. All year long the organization stashes the best and brightest and glittery-est vintage and current fashions, and then brings them back out for the sale. From sequined gala gowns to rhinestone brooches, the stuff is priced to move — and to help fund Goodwill’s free job training and education centers. Pretty essential stuff in times such as these.
