Danny Oleson and Natalie Samford of CakeSpy Shop in Capitol Hill.

In May of 2010, Jessie Oleson founded CakeSpy, a deliciously adorable blog that would soon become one of the Internet’s most frequently-visited destinations for all things sweet. Oleson’s blog—the online manifestation of her obsession with sprinkles and frosting and anything else that you can put on a cupcake—is what she calls the ‘Dessert Detective Agency dedicated to seeking sweetness (literally) in everyday life.’

While Oleson is busy running her online treat empire and translating her baking expertise into a second book (you can find her first on Amazon), husband Danny Oleson and Natalie Samford hold down the fort at CakeSpy Shop on Capitol Hill. Samford says Danny takes care of all the behind the scenes work while she provides assistance inside the half-art gallery, half-gift shop on Pine. We checked in with Samford to see what it’s like to work in what just might be the most mouthwateringly charming shop in Seattle.

WWW: What song or album is playing on your store’s sound system right now?
Samford: The Joy the Baker Podcast with Tracy Benjamin from Shutterbean.com has become what I listen to all the time when I am working on projects or paperwork. When customers come in, I usually switch over to a Motown Pandora station.

What was you first job in retail? What did you love or hate about it and how does it compare to what you do now?
My first job in retail was working at Pottery Barn at University Village. I loved, loved doing floor sets and talking with customers, helping them design their homes. It is a completely different world working at a small business—you learn very quickly that everything costs something, and that the experience with customers is so different—but in the best way. You really get to take time getting to know your shoppers.

What’s your favorite thing in the store right now?
I am in love with these hand-embroidered hoops by an artist from Newberg, Oregon, BoBesty. Also, I am obsessed with bunnies, and I really like Ryan Berkley’s Animal Prints. Six of these guys moved into my dining room late last year.

Where do you shop when you’re not at your store?
All the Best is one of our neighbors, and I go there like three times a week to buy the sparkle ball that my cat loves and loses. Also, Curtis Steiner in Ballard for inspiration and Gnome Enterprises online for their shirts. I hope to have some of their awesome shirts for the shop this holiday season.

What do you love about your store’s neighborhood? What nearby restaurants, coffee shops, etc. do you recommend?
I love that our neighborhood is so modern and fun. I love to see new local shops in the cool old buildings, there are creative people are everywhere, and there are lots of fun places to meet friends after work. Bauhaus for coffee, Honey Hole for lunch and dinner. Sun Liquor for drinks—luckily, we are sandwiched between both locations.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened in your store?
Probably when we had a flood earlier this year. I was working on pricing some new items, and all of a sudden water started pouring down all around me. Our neighbor accidentally left her bathtub running and left the room, and we flooded. I was fairly new here and called Danny, who was luxuriating at Disneyland in the sunshine, screaming about water and where our landlord’s phone number was. It was bonkers!

A signature clutch – pretty much started it all

Where: Far 4

What: A trunk show with one of Seattle’s most celebrated daughters, Amanda Brotman. Brotman’s line, Amanda Pearl, is made up of ribbon-tie necklaces, sleek satin clutches, and coordinating earrings and bracelets that won’t weigh you down. (Check the slideshow here for a look.) While giving an air of luxury and timeless good-taste, the jewelry is (for the most part) made with lightweight materials, thus making your trip down the aisle, and everything afterward, gorgeous and light. Love that.

It’s my firm belief that Brotman, a former dancer and attendee of not a few high-style events, will be a great resource for brides, and moms, and maids (and friends and cousins and roommates), who aren’t sure what kind of accoutrement they want gracing this neckline or the other. A percentage of all purchases will be donated to Seattle Art Museum Shoppers.

In addition to this great shopportunity, you’ll be treated to the amazing sweetness of Suzanne Rosellini of Rosellini Sweets. We like Suzanne’s cakes so much we put five of them in the current issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom. What’s more: Mini-manis from Mimisan. Say that five times quickly and yours is free (actually, they’re all free).

Speaking of the current issue of Seattle Met Bride & Groom; the brand new issue is on stands now, and at Far 4 for the trunk show – we’re excited to give you one.

When: Friday July 9 from 2 to 7.*c

Bridalwalkblog

Look for the pink poster at participating specialty shops and wedding vendors in downtown Bellevue next week, and find specials, deals, and expert advice inside

You’ve noticed that it’s not just bars and restaurants that throw happy hours these days, but here’s a new one for brides- and grooms-to-be: A wedding pub crawl.

Well, sort of. Okay not really. But close enough.

During the week of June 14 – June 20, between Christina Lynn Table Top and Home and Julep on Bellevue Way and City Flowers and Yuen Lui on NE 8th Street, seekers of gorgeous bridal gowns, stylish registry items, delicious cupcakes, wow-factor flowers, fine stationery, and more will be traversing the landscape looking not for pints of beer, but the pink sign shown here as well as top-rate wedding advice and great deals.

Bellevue’s Bridal Walk Week links the above mentioned vendors with Mr. J’s Culinary Kitchen, Obadiah Salon, Silberman Brown, Trophy Cupcakes, and Voletta Couture – and, this part is important, you.

Participating stores will be offering specials, incentives, and other good stuff – including, on Wednesday June 16, cake and champagne.

If, three years ago when we launched Seattle Met Bride & Groom, you had told me that I’d be spending a lot of time talking to people about cake platters, you would have been met with a pretty blank stare. As it turns out, the topic does come up a lot, so I’ve learned to focus my gaze a little.

I think the thing is that most people don’t spend a lot of time looking at or for cake pedestals until they need one — like, for a five-tier fresh raspberry-stripped chocolate ganache dream — and all those Amy Atlas dessert buffets make them feel that their union won’t even be legal if they don’t have a five-some of cakes on pretty strands strewn just-so on a long, perfect-color-palette spread.

Furthermore, they assume that after the DJ cues or the band approximates that terrible and seemingly irresistible Average White Band song, they’ll never need one again. And a headache ensues.

Cake pedestals, as we found out here, are not that hard to find. But if you’re imagining something clean-lined and stylishly classic, maybe in a haute shade of neon or a vintage jade hue, just call Sheena Kalso at Totally Tabletops.

Kalso rents great modern pieces to couples who aren’t looking for overly precious or expensively bland, and she’s excited to have recently added a huge pile of Mosser brand pedestals courtesy of Judy Tallant of Tallant House. Totally Tabletops serving pieces are pictured here; check them out.

More and more couples are doing the multiple cake thing, for sure. It makes so much sense, and it makes for such a pretty spread. Browsing the Totally-Tabletop-by-way-of-Tallant-House collection, you can just imagine how the blue milk glass Mosser would look next to a white milk glass Mosser surrounded by couple of shorter, ruffled-edge clear platters. That is: adorable. Good enough to eat. (Though it should be noted, the pedestals work just as well under a single, stacked cake or piled with cupcakes, donuts, cookies, or whatever else.)

So go ahead and dream, and browse the images here, courtesy Tallant House, knowing that you can make it all happen without spending a bunch of money (the Mossers are loaned for between $10 and $20 bucks), and without a single headache.

Social Calendar

Four events to consider adding to your wedding planning itinerary.

Email

The birds, the cherry blossoms, and the daffodils are out in full effect — must be … yeah, it is… Wedding Season. Here are four events to consider adding to your wedding planning social calendar.

1. Let’s get the words FREE and CUPCAKE in the same sentence, shall we? On Saturday April 10 from 11 to 2p at 415 Westlake, Cupcake Camp will both raise money for Hope Heart Institute and allow you taste-test an obscene amount of the sweet little bites from all over the city. If you’re thinking of having cupcakes at your reception, there is probably no better all-in-one opportunity to figure out whose you like the best. Some kind of wonderful, eh? You have Bella Cupcake Couture to thank for the Seattle edition of this national “camp,” so let’s not forget those adorable little wrappers. (No, Cupcake Camp is not strictly a wedding event, but it’s okay if you utilize it as one.)

2. Martina Liana trunk show March 26-28 at Calla Bridal. The Australian-based gown line makes a special appearance at the all-but-hidden bridal boutique near Green Lake.

3. Billed as a “more civilized way to accomplish your wedding planning,” Voila! gathers vendors like Azzura Photography, All About Weddings & Celebrations, and Edit 1 Media (full list, curated by Panache and Pink Blossoms Events, is here) at the Woodmark in Kirkland on Sunday March 28 from noon to 5 and leaves the rest, more or less, up to you. Ask questions, inquire about availability, and check out the seasonally decorated rooms for inspiration and motivation.

4. For a more urban flavor, you might try meeting up with PM Photobooth, Gabriel Boone Photography, Moon Mansion, Scott Staples Catering, and more at Sole Repair on Capitol Hill on Sunday April 18 from 3 to 6. Hosted by All the Flutter and Anticipate Wedding and Event Planning, The One is an afternoon of photobooth snaps, snack samples, and mini spa services.
