The Bar Formerly Known as Viceroy

Email

You know Viceroy. It’s a bar that should be awesome—given its styling bachelor-pad decor and roster of good DJs. But it’s saddled with a weekend crowd heavy on cologne and wince-inducing antics.

Well, if you’ve been there in the past few months, it turns out you weren’t at Viceroy at all, but at a place called The Rob Roy. The bar quietly changed its name some weeks back.

Why? Here’s what owner Linda Derschang emailed me: “We mainly changed the name to Rob Roy as we are focusing on our original intention of being a classic cocktail bar. The change happened after hiring Tara Mclaughlin [formerly of the Hideout]. The Rob Roy has become our signature drink and Tara makes a mean one!”

So what’s in a Rob Roy (besides noisy Belltowners in $200 jeans)? It’s three parts scotch, 1 part sweet Vermouth, stirred and strained and served over cracked ice.

ok, i confess: i want to be too cool for the the viceroy, i mean rob roy, but i really like the sofas in there. i’ve only been inside once, but the sofas are low profile, kinda boxy leather, and i think in very good taste.

I agree, the place is really well appointed. On a slow night, it’s a great bar.

i haven’t been since the changeover, but i used to go to viceroy when my friends were spinning. it’s a pretty nice, relaxed atmosphere, and yes, the interior is warm and comforting. my only problem was the belltown drink prices…booo
