Upcoming Drinking Events: Oktoberfests; Liquor Law Happy Hour with Steve Scher; Two Beers, Traffic, and a Pretzel for $10.

Lots of booze-enhanced events over the next seven days.

Benecio

Watch badass Benicio whilst drinking beer at Lot No 3 tonight, beginning at 10pm.

Hey Bellevue, how many beers can you drink in 122 minutes? That’s the running time of Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic, the film on the docket this week at Lot No 3 in Bellevue. The whiskey-and-beer bar offers up a film along with a late-night snacking menu each Monday. Two beers and a soft pretzel will run you $10. One beer and a slider is $6.

Wednesday the 21st brings us a Think and Drink happy hour at Naked City in Greenwood. The topic is liquor laws—upon which we will once again be voting this November. His Abruptness Steve Scher, host of KUOW’s Weekday, moderates; William Rorabaugh, UW prof and author of The Alcoholic Republic will also be weighing in, as will bowtie-donning Pike Brewing founder Charles Finkel. This event is free.

Friday, October 23 through Sunday the 25th, catch a beer buzz in the center of the universe at Fremont’s always-sloshy Oktoberfest. Speaking of Ocktoberfest, Beveridge Place Pub. is making like Munich by serving Spaten, Paulaner, and Hofbrau in one liter mugs through October 3.

Also on the 23rd: the bar at Ponti Seafood Grill will be mixing up the hot-and-boozy variety of beverage at a $2 discount. The deal is available only in the lounge.

Revealed: First Chance to Try Spirits from Mystery-Shrouded Fremont Mischief

The secrecy-loving distillery shares a little info.

Shhh

Enough with the shushing! Fremont Mischief finally talks.

Photo via this blog

Years in the works, Fremont Mischief Distillery, project of Mike and Patti Sherlock, has been notably hush-hush about plans.

And in true Seattle style, when the distillery finally revealed itself, it did so quietly and nerdily. Last Saturday, the first tours of its luxe-looking HQ at 132 N Canal Street were offered to 750 treasure hunters during a Groundspeak geocaching party, according to Patti.

The distillery and tasting room are “almost ready to open,” but Patti says that the first public opportunity to try the products will be August 31, during the grand opening of the new upscale state liquor store at 4100 SW Alaska Street in West Seattle. (The store is one of the 30 tapped for the pilot program to test spirit sampling in state stores, according to West Seattle Blog.)

“Most of our spirits and a sampling of our products will be there,” Patti revealed yesterday evening in an email. So if you head to the new hooch emporium on the 31st, you can try “Fremont Mischief whiskey, gin, and vodka,” and check out the distillery’s “cocktail kits, vintage leather cases with a dirty martini kit, and more.”

Look for more Mischief info coming soon.

Seattle Beer Week

Seattle Beer Week Essentials: More Beer Cocktails, Hale’s at Cooper’s, Old World Versus Lazy Boy

There are still plenty of chances to take advantage of SBW.

Email
Kelcrowd

Beers from Hale’s are on tap tonight at Cooper’s Alehouse.

More beer? More beer! Here are the SBW picks for May 25.

FREMONT
If you missed Brewing Up Cocktails last night, you have another chance. This time tenders will be making cocktails with brews from Hopworks Urban Brewery in Portland. The five signature drinks are available tonight at Brouwer’s Cafe from 6 to 9pm.

MAPLE LEAF
Cooper’s Alehouse is all about the home-brewed pride: Its 23 taps have been devoted exlusively to Seattle beers all week, and tonight it is featuring brews from Hale’s Ales in Ballard.

WEST SEATTLE:
Tonight at the Cask a tasting that pits four Euro brews against four beers from Lazy Boy in Everett. It goes from 6 to 9pm.

A sampling of all eight runs you $5. These are the beers:
Belgian: Orval Trappist Ale versus Lazy Boy Belgian
German: Pinkus Organic Ur Pils versus Lazy Boy Lager
English: Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale versus Lazy Boy Amber
English: Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout versus Lazy Boy Porter.

Seattle Beer Week Essentials: Cider on Cap Hill, $3 Pints, Brouwer’s Taps Evil Twin

Rare deals and rarer taps on day five of SBW.

Quinns

Cider and cheese pair up at Quinn’s tonight.

And so we’ve come to the middle.

It’s day five of Seattle Beer Week, and the events continue to flow forward like a frothy, turbulent river current. Break out your metaphorical canoes and ride that rapid, people. Beer week comes but once a year.

Here’s what looks good for Monday, May 23.

CAPITOL HILL
Cider fans: Tonight Quinn’s is hosting an event in your honor. Pay $25 at the door to receive six different cider samplings paired with cheeses. This goes from 6 to 9pm—I suggest you call to see if there is still space. I’d do it for you right now but Quinn’s isn’t open yet.

FREMONT
Brouwer’s Cafe in Fremont has been touting the fact that tonight it will tap rare kegs from Evil Twin Brewing in Denmark.

WEST SEATTLE
If Beer Week, for you, is about sampling as many state-made brews as possible, head to Beveridge Place Pub in West Seattle. It has 24 Washington beers on tap, and is charging just $3 a pint.

Also, Tomme Arthur from Southern California’s Port Brewing Company will be at Super Deli Mart at 1pm. (At 7pm he heads to Hopvine on Capitol Hill. Don’t let any Cascadia brewers catch you chilling with one of the San Diego dudes.)

A trio of side notes:
1. Don’t forget we’ve got a guide to SBW beer week dinners over on Nosh.

2. All week The Dray on Phinney Ridge is dusting off bottles stored in its cellar and serving them up to you, fair customer. This is to honor its third birthday.

3. For a full list of events, turn to the SBW website.

Seattle Beer Week Essentials: Kulture Freaks, Chuckanut at Shultzy’s, Guide to Beer Dinners

It’s only day two people, keep them livers primed.

Kulture Freaks happens tonight at Brouwer’s

Photo: brookstonbeerbulletin.com

FREMONT
Big old party at Brouwer’s: Kulture Freaks, featuring carnival attractions, burlesque performers, and a whole lot of beer starts at 9pm and sounds like a wild ride. If you’re just doing one SBW event this year, this might be the one.

U-DISTRICT
Fair warning: Shultzy’s promises to be a total sausage fest tonight. (Sorry, I just can’t not make the sausage fest joke.) Staffers from Chuckanut in Bellingham will be on hand to talk about the brewery’s lagers—the restaurant is pairing five of those with five different sausages.

WEST SEATTLE
The Beer Junction is hosting a tasting of Iron Horse Brewery beers. That doesn’t sound like a big deal but I would like to take this occasion to steer you towards the Ellensburg-based brewery’s IPA. It’s milder than a lot of our state-brewed IPAs, an excellent gateway beer for reluctant hopheads.

Looking towards the weekend: Nosh Pit has posted a guide to the good SBW beer-pairing dinners, you’ll want to reserve today if you’re interested in attending one of them. The Volunteer Park Café and Stone Brewing feast sounds like an amazing, possibly gout-inducing indulge-o-rama. (Bone-marrow mashed potatoes? Hard core.)

On Saturday, there are a bunch of tasty-looking brunches, and that’s the day that the Tour de Pints happens. Look to SBW’s website for a complete list of events. I’d also refer you to SBW coverage on Seattle Beer News.

Good stuff.

Min-chung-mini-mart-owner

Super Deli Mart’s Min Chung has stocked up for Seattle Beer Week.

Here are my SBW picks for Thursday, May 19:

WEST SEATTLE
Super Deli Mart kicks off the beerathon with the following brews on tap: Anderson Valley Brewing’s Bahl Hornin’ Imperial Boont Amber Ale, Boulevard Brewing Dry Stout, the Afterburner IPA from Flyers Restaurant and Brewery, and Stone Brewing Co’s Double Bastard Ale and 10.10.10 Vertical Epic Ale.

Also in West Seattle: From 6 to 11:45pm it’s Cask-o-rama at Beveridge Place pub, an awesome occasion to try Seattle-made beers on cask.

GREENWOOD
Another hyper-local happening: In Greenwood, Naked City is doing a special food menu for the occasion and splitting its 24 taps between house-made brews and beers from other Seattle breweries.

The Yard, a new Greenwood bar from the people behind the Dray, opens tonight at 8313 Greenwood Ave. N. New beer bar + beer week=happy times.

REDMOND AND CAPITOL HILL
The Coney Island Craft Lager circus show will be at Redmond’s Malt and Vine early in the evening then over to Unicorn on Capitol Hill.

Drinking Events This Week: Cinco de Mayo and Derby Day

Boozy things to do around Seattle.

Email
Victoria-beckham-royal-wedding-dress1

Your royal wedding hat could win you a prize on Derby Day—Tavern Law and Bottleneck are doing costume contests.

The Sauce has been a little thin lately, you may have noticed. This is due to the fact that I was having a little Illinois adventure last week. But I’m back and there’s a lot going on.

Let’s get to it.

Wednesday, May 4 Lupec Seattle will hold its monthly meeting. This time the ladies will be heading out to Woodinville Whiskey for a tasting class. The suggested donation—which will go to relief efforts in Japan—is $20. See the Lupec Seattle’s site for more details.

Thursday, May 5 is of course Cinco de Mayo, so we’ll be wanting to drink some margaritas. You could hit up La Carta de Oaxaca but let’s face it, that place is likely to be a total cluster on Cinco. Maybe try one of these parties instead: Milagro Cantina in Kirkland is rolling out the $5 food menu and a $5–7 specialty cocktail menu. Bottleneck is offering a special taco menu that night. Bandolero in Greenlake is having a Cinco de Mayo party too and margaritas there are always $5 during happy hour (4–6 and 10–midnight).

Also on Thursday: good beer! West Seattle’s Beveridge Place Pub hosts the Three Matts brewers night with, you guessed it, three brewers named Matt. The Matts in question are Matt McClung from Schooner Exact, Matt Stromberg from Scuttlebutt, and Matt Lincoln of Fremont Brewing. This starts at 7pm.

One more thing on Thursday: Theo Chocolate’s Abby Culin is heading over to Wine World Warehouse to conduct a wine and chocolate pairing class with WWW’s owner, sommelier David LeClaire. That’s from 7pm to 9pm and costs $20.

Saturday, May 7 is Derby Day, so if you’re one of those royal wedding hat people, here’s a chance to give that kooky headwear a second life. Bottleneck hosts a costume contest with prizes during its annual derby party, and Skillet will show up from 2 to 4 to dole out burgers and poutine and so forth. Just a little way’s away on Capitol Hill, Tavern Law will be doing its annual Derby Day party. That’s from 1 to 7pm and it, too, features a costume contest.

Looking forward to next week: Bartender Miles Thomas will work his last shift at the Hideout on Friday, May 13. Should be a party….

Five New and Very New Places to Check Out This Weekend

New year, new watering holes. Here’s what’s popped up around town.

Email

Locöl Revelry It’s the weekend, time to explore fresh drinkeries.

1. 50 North has opened across the street from University Village—stop in for happy hour.

2. Chorizo dumplings, pork belly pancakes, five spiced duck balls: Almost everything on the menu at Revel is under $15 and Quoin, the attached bar, is shaping up nicely.

3. Patience, my dears. Local 360 is opening very softly and slowly, but stop by the coffee bar and grab a latte and a chance to check out the interior.

4. Pop into Soul Wine, the new South Lake Union shop from Pike and Western’s Michael Teer, and get a glimpse of the goings-on upstairs at about-to-open Serious Pie.

5. All signs point to a grand opening this weekend at West Seattle’s year-in-the-works beer and wine bar Locöl. I’ve got a message into the owners, will let you know as soon as I hear.

Have a Round for Haiti

Help relief efforts by raising a glass at these local drinkeries.

Email
Boom

Boom Noodle offers its happy hour menu during a silent art auction to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. Twenty-five percent of food and drink proceeds will also be donated.

Watch five minutes of CNN coverage in post-earthquake Port-au-Prince and you’ll want to do something…anything…whatever to help. Do this: head to Liberty Bar on Capitol Hill and plunk down $6 for a cocktail called “the Haiti.” Then have another. One hundred percent of your tab will help disaster relief efforts there.

Here are some other ways to drink for Haiti.

You can drop off donations for Unicef at any of the Purple Cafe and Wine Bars and the two branches of Barrio until January 24. Heavy Restaurant Group has pledged to match from one to 10 percent of those donations, depending on the total.

On Thursday, January 21 (tonight!), The Great Nabob will give away $1 for every drink purchased off its specialty cocktail menu. Dough goes to Doctors Without Borders and Partners in Health.

On Saturday, January 23 at the George and Dragon, Seattle Sounders Steve Zakuani and James Riley will be onhand to sign autographs in exchange for a $5 donation. The bar is also selling $5 raffle tickets, prizes include Soudersphenalia and gift certificates.

On Sunday, January 24, Quinn’s Pub on Capitol Hill and Skylark Café and Club in West Seattle are participating in a dine-out initiative where a portion of the night’s earnings go to relief orgs: each restaurant chooses the donation percentage, see other participating restaurants here.

Next Tuesday, January 26 from 7 to 10pm, Boom Noodle will offer its happy hour menu during a silent art auction to benefit Haiti—25 percent of food and drink proceeds will go to Haiti, while 100 percent of the auction earning will be donated. Look out for art from Spike Mafford, Dean Zulich, Matt Larson, and Joe Shlichta; there is a $100 bid minimum.

The benefit “Turning Wine into Water” begins at 5pm on January 31 at Cellar 46 restaurant and wine bar on Mercer Island. There will be food, DJs, tastings, and a wine auction. Make individual donations at the door, suggested amount is $25 and up.

If you can’t find anything you like here, check out the A&E guide to Haiti relief efforts. There’s kind of something for everyone, so go out, give generously, and have a good time.
