It’s only day two people, keep them livers primed.

Kulture Freaks happens tonight at Brouwer’s

FREMONT
Big old party at Brouwer’s: Kulture Freaks, featuring carnival attractions, burlesque performers, and a whole lot of beer starts at 9pm and sounds like a wild ride. If you’re just doing one SBW event this year, this might be the one.
U-DISTRICT
Fair warning: Shultzy’s promises to be a total sausage fest tonight. (Sorry, I just can’t not make the sausage fest joke.) Staffers from Chuckanut in Bellingham will be on hand to talk about the brewery’s lagers—the restaurant is pairing five of those with five different sausages.
WEST SEATTLE
The Beer Junction is hosting a tasting of Iron Horse Brewery beers. That doesn’t sound like a big deal but I would like to take this occasion to steer you towards the Ellensburg-based brewery’s IPA. It’s milder than a lot of our state-brewed IPAs, an excellent gateway beer for reluctant hopheads.
Looking towards the weekend: Nosh Pit has posted a guide to the good SBW beer-pairing dinners, you’ll want to reserve today if you’re interested in attending one of them. The Volunteer Park Café and Stone Brewing feast sounds like an amazing, possibly gout-inducing indulge-o-rama. (Bone-marrow mashed potatoes? Hard core.)
On Saturday, there are a bunch of tasty-looking brunches, and that’s the day that the Tour de Pints happens. Look to SBW’s website for a complete list of events. I’d also refer you to SBW coverage on Seattle Beer News.
Good stuff.

50 North in the University District
You may recall that back in October, I spoke to Melinda Sontgerath, owner of the Hardware Store on Vashon Island, about her plans to open 50 North, a restaurant and event space just across the street from the University Village.
Well it’s open, has been since New Year’s Eve. If you hit it between the hours of 4 and 6pm you can catch a happy hour menu with $5 appetizers and drink specials. Among those $5 apps: gluten-free fish and chips and corn beef sliders with apple-pumpkin hash. Among those specials: all wines by the glass are discounted to $6.
Here’s the
website.

Will that beer be organic? What do you think?

Chaco Canyon Healthy eats destination and future microbrewer
About six months ago, Chaco Canyon, the organic cafe in the U-District obsessively frequented by UW’s raweys, vegans, and vegetarians (plus the people who love them), started serving alcohol. Organic alcohol, of course—wine, sake, and draft beers from Elliot Bay Brewing.
Now, says owner Chris Maykut, Chaco Canyon is going to start brewing its own beer.
“We pretty much make everything ourselves in house” says Maykut, “chai, chocolate sauce, ice cream, all soups, dressings…and our Head Chef [Lois Blanfold] is quite passionate about brewing. We just got our organic hops and four-tap tower in, so we should have a rotating housemade beer available in the coming months.”
Maykut promises to let me know when the new brews are available. I’ll keep you posted.

Bob’s Homebrew is the spot.

One of my favorite things to see: readers helping readers. When Bonnie commented that she would like to try Jamie Boudreau’s ginger beer recipe but was unsure where to find champagne yeast, Barbara suggested she visit the “brewery supply store by Calvary Cemetery near UW.”
The shop Barbara is referring to his Bob’s Homebrew Supply, and it is located at 2821 NE 55th Street (indeed, very close to the cemetary). Phone number is 206-527-9283. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so you’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to go get your yeast, Impatient Ones. Thanks Barbara!

This Wednesday, local brewsky luminary Mike Baker talks pale ales and IPAs.
Posted by: Jessica Voelker on Mar 01, 2010 at 07:47AM
University District brews-and-brats bar Shultzy’s has introduced a monthly beer education class. This Wednesday, March 3 the subject is pale ales and IPAs. Your teacher is Mike Baker, who helped start local microbrewery Baron Brewing (he has since sold his share) but now toils for Pacific Beverages and is one of the four members of Seattle Beer Collective—the group that organizes Seattle Beer Week.
Classes are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 6pm and are limited to 25 people, so to attend you must reserve and pay the $20 tuition in advance. If you can’t go this month, sign up for a class on German beers in April or weisse beers in May.
