Coffee Talk
It’s going on the corner of Sixth and University.

The downtown crowd is due for another local java destination come summer. Voxx Coffee, an Eastlake Ave staple for more than four years now, is opening a second cafe on the corner of Sixth and University.
Regulars of Voxx know it as a spot where custom Lighthouse blends brew by day, and wine and beer flow by night. Michael Uetz and fellow co-owner Myriam Guillemin will import that same beverage menu, as well as the stellar sandwiches, wraps, and pastries. And the 4-7 happy hour? “Not sure,” says Uetz, “but I have a feeling we will.”
Also carrying over is the retro styling that makes Voxx such a looker. “I have a passion for mid-century design,” says Uetz. “We’ll incorporate some of the same elements.” But expect touches unique to 2.0, too. This new cafe is longer and narrower than the original, so Uetz guesses it will accommodate a smaller crowd, maybe around 20 people. The contractors are having at the space as we speak; Uetz anticipates it will open in July.

Stop by for a Swiss hot chocolate.
Posted by: Christopher Werner on Feb 24, 2012 at 11:37AM
Coffee shops abound in this town, but few (none?) are Alpine-inspired.
Behold Cafe Suisse, which opens today at 2008 Westlake Avenue, writes in Urs Berger. He is opening Suisse with his wife Leslie Conti; they own neighboring boutique Eurostyle Your Life.
The wood-accented spot is quite cute, and carries an assortment of delights hailing from Berger’s native Switzerland, such as soft drinks and pastries called guetzi. Locavores can relax knowing Victrola is the bean of choice, but if you’re here you really should order a Swiss hot chocolate anyway—Berger and Conti promise it’s the real deal.
Cafe Suisse is open Monday through Saturday 6:30‐6.

“The little piece of Europe” will open in the 2000 block in several weeks.

Leslie Conti sent over this pic of the coffee shop she and husband Urs Berger are opening at 2008 Westlake Avenue.
As the name suggests, Cafe Suisse takes a few cues from the land of Toblerone and pristine Alps. Soft drinks from Switzerland are in the cards, as are pastries Conti called guetzi and of course, Swiss hot chocolate. Victrola will be the bean of choice.
A Swiss-American architect rejiggered the space next to Conti and Berger’s boutique Eurostyle Your Life. Toy makers for the shop formerly occupied the spot but are now sequestered to the back. Lest you worry they’ll be by their lonesome, a wooden wall separating the coffee drinkers from the craftsmen features a cross-shaped window—a nod to the Swiss flag—wherein the workers can be watched.
“It’s nice to have a distraction while you wait for your coffee,” offered Conti, who says Suisse is more of a “stand-up” coffee shop than sit-down cafe. Vintage travel posters will hang on the south-facing wall, and a door to Eurostyle Your Life is positioned on the opposite one.
Conti and Berger, a native of Switzerland, hope to open Suisse in three weeks or so.

Sebastian Simsch’s second cafe will go by Ballard Coffee Works.
Posted by: Christopher Werner on Oct 31, 2011 at 03:59PM
Sebastian Simsch gets his buzz on at downtown’s Seattle Coffee Works.
Sebastian Simsch, esteemed bean man and owner of downtown’s Seattle Coffee Works, has landed what he considers a real estate gold mine for his second cafe: the corner of NW Market Street and 22nd Avenue. Simsch just signed the lease; the spot will go by Ballard Coffee Works.
“There’s rarely a piece of real estate” like that, Simsch says of the prime plot, formerly home to a Tully’s and before that, a bank. He added most corner coffee shops are too big but the 2,000-square-footer is exactly what he had in mind when scouting his expansion. Simsch anticipates a considerable overhaul of the interior before the coffee shop opens in early spring. “We want to make it a lot more pleasant. The bank hasn’t been swept out of the building.”
Ballard Coffee Works will carry the same core offerings as the downtown cafe (slated for an appearance on Bizarre Foods in January or February) but Simsch says those could change “as we see fit.” Ballard is very much its own animal, he points out, and he plans to accommodate accordingly. Ultimately he hopes BCW will serve as a “community center” for the neighborhood.

The new Boren Ave shop has been designed in the style of the Kirkland Zoka, according to an employee.

Zoka’s fourth location opens April 11.

As if consumable treat-wealthy South Lake Union needed something else to be psyched about, now it gets a Zoka?
I just spoke with an employee at Zoka HQ about the company’s new location at 351 Boren Avenue North in South Lake Union. “It’s in one of the buildings of one of the new companies down there. You can probably guess which one,” he told me.
Mysterious. And by mysterious I mean Amazon.
The new store will resemble the Kirkland location, said the employee. Of the three existent local Zokas, Kirkland’s is decidedly the fanciest, with sleek modern lighting and a big communal table carved from a tree trunk. (For maximum Northwestiness, please add communal table carved from a tree trunk).
The South Lake Union Zoka will open on April 11.
