In addition to drinking pumpkin beer, you can dress your dog up in a pumpkin costume. Because this is America.

Elysian Brewing Company’s brewer-in-chief Dick Cantwell revealed yesterday that he is working with the folks at Tom Douglas Restaurants to create Serious Pumpkin, a beer featuring three varieties of America’s favorite gourd.
The squashes will be sourced from the Douglas family’s Prosser Farm, which is already supplying sour cherries for another forthcoming TDR beer. Serious Pumpkin should make the Bravehorse Tavern menu later this fall, according to Cantwell, and will possibly pop up at other T-Doug joints. (One could not be blamed for expecting to see it at Serious Pie, given the name.)
It will also be one of the more than 50 pumpkin beers poured at Elysian’s Great Pumpkin Beer Festival, to be held on October 8 and 9 at Elysian’s new Georgetown brewery, where no beer has yet been brewed. The brewery is expected to go into operation within the next few weeks.

Fourth of July
Everyone loves that barbecue guest who shows up armed with excellent local brews. Be that guy with these beers.

Beer: It’s what people drink on the Fourth of July
Photo: Chuckanut
I want you to be happy. I think drinking these local beers on the Fourth will help that happen:
1. Silver City Brewery in Silverdale makes great beer—one of their newest is the highly drinkable Ziggy Zoggy Lager. It’ll be very welcome guest at any Fourth of July barbeque you attend.
2. Fremont Brewing has been rolling out kegs of its Summer Solstice—an American pale ale—to some of my favorite bars over the past few weeks, giving me plenty of opportunity to delight in its crisp hops-forward (but not too hops-forward) flavor. They’ve captured summer in this brew, and you will delight in it. Speaking of kegs, you can order one directly from Fremont if your party is on the larger/boozier side.
3. Kolsch! If you are planning to eat light this Fourth—grilled fish, ceviche, fresh salads—you could do a lot worse than a Kolsch from Chuckanut Brewing in Bellingham, which I’ve been enjoying on tap at Seatown Seabar, among other places. Hale’s Ales’ kolsch is also nice—slightly sour, very sessionable—and it is widely available in grocery stores. In the off-chance that it rains on Monday, these beers bring their own sort of sunshine.
4. Elysian Avatar Jasmine IPA: Once a seasonal, this winningest of brews is now available year-round and that’s exactly how often I want to drink it. Pair with Asian-leaning salads—cabbage slaw with soy, sesame oil, and ginger; cucumber salad with vinegar and sesame seeds, etc. It’s also the right beer for yakitori.

Nice Package
The SoDo brewery debuts new packaging today.

Can you handle this?

Back in 2009, I contacted Wallingford beer emporium Bottleworks to learn about the advantages of cans over bottles. As it turned out, cans cost less to fill and less to ship, and were of course highly portable—and we all know that outdoor folks tend to enjoy their microbrews. Aluminum cans are way more convenient than bottles to take into the woods or whatever.
In those days, Two Beers Brewing was just a teeny little micro headquartered in a storage space in Fremont. The beer wasn’t even available by the bottle until 2011. But today the brewery, now housed in a proper space in SoDo complete with tasting room, will intro a canned version of its Evolutionary IPA along with two summer seasonals: Panorama Wheat and Trailhead ISA (that stands for India Session Ale, meaning an IPA you can drink a lot of).
The cans will be in stores (Whole Foods, Central Markets) early next week. If you want to get crackin’ before that, head to the brewery on Thursday, June 23 for the release party.

Summer Brews
A brand-new summer brew from Silver City hits stores this week.
Posted by: Jessica Voelker on Apr 25, 2011 at 01:25PM
It feels weird to be talking about outdoor drinking, seeing as a cruel inky rain is currently soaking the windows of my office. But we must persevere, musn’t we?
Also, I want to tell you about the new lager from Silver City Brewery in Silverdale. The brewery sent me a sample of it the other week, I had only just heard about it from Rich Coffey—chef at Madison Park Cafe and contributor to Seattlest. (He offered up some of his summer beer picks for an article, more on that later.)
Good suggestion, Coffey! Ziggy Zoggy is such an easy-drinking, tasty beer for summer. Brewed in the Bavarian tradition of kellerbier or zwickelbier, it’s unfiltered and has great malt flavor but enough bitter hop character to satisfy a Northwest palate.
I called Kurt Larson of Silver City to find out when we can get our hands on some more, turns out it’s being bottled tomorrow and should start trickling into the market later this week with full distribution by mid-May. Ballard Market will carry it, as will all Whole Foods stores.
