Bar Bites
A welcome development for downtown imbibers.

The bar at RN74 is a spirited place (and not just in the literal sense. Been here for happy hour? Then you know what I mean), and now, news it’s to become even more of a destination.
A rep for the restaurant says chef Michelle Retallack and sous Larkin Young are rolling out a new bill of barside nibbles. With just under 25 items it’s a pretty extensive menu punctuated with buzzword vittles like soft pretzels, foie gras sliders, bone marrow, pork belly, and corn dogs (but of the lobster variety).
The menu is split into six sections, labeled as such: poppers, sticks (i.e. the lobster dog), toasts, baskets (fries and other dippable things), oysters (on the half shell and done up), and buns. The offerings are available Monday through Saturday 11:30am–close and Sunday 10am–close.
Eight of the “finger snacks” will be served during happy hour for $6 or less (a majority of the items are under $10 otherwise) alongside drink specials that top out at $5. Happy hour happens Monday through Saturday 3 to 6 and 10:30 to close and Sunday all day.

(Some) details on the RN74 bash.

RN74 Seattle hosts its first Bastille Day bash this Thursday.

As I mentioned in this list of Bastille Day parties last week, RN74 has been hyping its shindig over Twitter, but I couldn’t then get details on what the deal was.
But today, finally: details. Well, sort of details. We know there will be $5 “food specials,” at least, and “Buck oyster shucks” for $1. Drink specials include $2 Kronenbourgs, $5 French 75s and Ciroc vodka cocktails, plus $5 wines by the glass including a muscadet, a rose, and a Cote du Rhone.
Held in RN74’s sizable lounge, the party begins at 5pm on Thursday, July 14.

Seattle Bar News
“Zig Zag is a young man’s bar,” says Stenson.

Murray Stenson at Zig Zag
Why is Murray Stenson moving to RN74 Seattle from Zig Zag Café?
I just had a quick phone chat with him and asked.
“I’d been at Zig Zag for 10 years,” he said. “I’m looking to simplify. I’m really old, and Zig Zag is a young man’s bar.”
The amazing amount of attention the bar has received in the national press has led to bigger and bigger crowds. A good problem to have for a bar, but something Stenson’s ready to do without.
“It’s a monster,” he said. “The move will be good for my blood pressure. And I can spend more time with my family.”
So will he be working less?
“Not necessarily. I’m penciled in for four 10 hour shifts and talking to some other bars about picking up two extra shifts.”
And won’t the crowds that flock to Zig Zag to see him just overwhelm the bar at RN74 as well?
“I don’t think it’s possible. The bar is much smaller over there, and the accent [at RN74] is more on food than drink.”
RN74 opens June 13 at 1433 Fourth Avenue. Rajat Parr is the wine director. Michelle Retallack is executive chef.

From RN74 Seattle’s Twitter account: a sneak peek of the wine bar and restaurant opening in June at Fourth and Pike downtown.
RN74 Seattle is an offshoot of Michael Mina’s San Francisco establishment. Back in March, Nosh Pit chatted with Mina about his plans for the second location. As at the original, he told us, the wine at RN74 will inform the food (as opposed to the other way around), and the restaurant will stock over 100 bottles under $100.
I have high hopes for the food though, what with staffers like Maria Hines protege Larkin Young in the kitchen and Mina vet Michelle Retallack at the helm.
