Super Deli Mart’s Min Chung has stocked up for Seattle Beer Week.

Here are my SBW picks for Thursday, May 19:

WEST SEATTLE
Super Deli Mart kicks off the beerathon with the following brews on tap: Anderson Valley Brewing’s Bahl Hornin’ Imperial Boont Amber Ale, Boulevard Brewing Dry Stout, the Afterburner IPA from Flyers Restaurant and Brewery, and Stone Brewing Co’s Double Bastard Ale and 10.10.10 Vertical Epic Ale.

Also in West Seattle: From 6 to 11:45pm it’s Cask-o-rama at Beveridge Place pub, an awesome occasion to try Seattle-made beers on cask.

GREENWOOD
Another hyper-local happening: In Greenwood, Naked City is doing a special food menu for the occasion and splitting its 24 taps between house-made brews and beers from other Seattle breweries.

The Yard, a new Greenwood bar from the people behind the Dray, opens tonight at 8313 Greenwood Ave. N. New beer bar + beer week=happy times.

REDMOND AND CAPITOL HILL
The Coney Island Craft Lager circus show will be at Redmond’s Malt and Vine early in the evening then over to Unicorn on Capitol Hill.

Happy Places: Malt and Vine

Beer geeks and oenophiles find common ground in a Redmond strip mall.

The Place Malt and Vine
The Deal A low-key Redmond retailer that caters to beer geeks and oenophiles alike.
Manager’s Pick Store manager Clint Scriven is stoked about Terrasaurus, the new shitake mushroom-brewed stout from SoDo craft brewer Epic.
Our pick Firestone Walker Solace, an unfiltered summer ale
The scoop Beer tastings are held every Friday evening beginning at 5:30. There are also special cask pours. Malt and Vine ships by the bottle and also stocks kegs. See website for details or inquire within.

Seattle has great wines stores, and it has great beer stores. But Redmond has a great beer and wine store. It’s called Malt and Vine and it is not the sort of emporium that takes advantage of every bit of square footage. It is quite sparse, in fact. Clean and down to earth, Malt and Vine is the booze retail equivalent of a cold washcloth on your feverish forehead—soothing, relaxing, in possession of the ability to slow you down.

In the front half of Malt and Vine, where the beer is stored, there is a scattering of tables. Behind this is a bar with a line of taps and a chalkboard menu detailing the revolving selection on beers and wines by the glass. Do you see what I am saying here when I say there is a bar? I am saying that you can drink in the store. I love the idea of coming out to buy a few bottles and then pausing over a pint of German pilsner or a California cab before returning to the real world.

In the back is a small but well-curated wine section with an emphasis on Washington. I was sort of expecting a perfunctory selection—that’s usually what you get at beer shops—but I was instead impressed with the thoughtful choices at Malt and Vine. Lucky Redmond.

Happy Hour Spotlight: Jerzy’s Wine Bar in Redmond

Croque monsieur sliders. What else is there to say, really?

Jerz

Headed out to Redmond yesterday and what did I happen upon while lost amongst the strip malls of Redmond Way? Jerzy’s Wine Bar and Bistro, a little wine-bar-in-a-house nestled improbably, adorably between shopping centers. Spotting it, I did a dangerous left turn into a nearby parking lot and crept over to investigate.

As I skulked around the red shingled house to a sweet little patio area near the entrance, a goatee’d man pulled up on a bicycle and we got to chatting. There was a language barrier, but I gathered he was an employee, and soon enough the owner came out and joined us. I was soon invited inside, where I found a cozy little barroom with bottle-lined shelves and curlicue ironwork and one blue wall and a lot of other randomness that all somehow added up to something good, to somewhere you’d want to spend a little time.

Happy hour at Jerzy’s runs Monday through Saturday from 5 to 7pm (the bar is closed Sundays). There are $5 reds and white, five different types of bruschetta, croque monsieur sliders, and various “tapas” (olives and whatnot). Jerzy’s also has a very nice lunch deal: soup or salad, entrée, and a glass of wine for $8.

My Redmond go-to happy hour has always been the Matador, but now I think I might be hitting up Jerzy’s. Croque monsieur sliders? Come on now. Wonder what other HH gems are hiding out there in Microsoft land….
