Holiday Boozing
Here are five things to do tonight.

Canlis’s color-changing margarita, the Prosperina.

You can always wait in line for an hour outside La Carta de Oaxaca. It’s always worth it. Or you could do one of these things.
1. Go to La Casa Azul up north for a strawberry margarita. We’ve talked about this already. That restaurant is awesome.
2. Get a margarita that changes color at the bar at Canlis.
3. Go to Pike Brewing and drink a Cerveza Rosanna—an ale made with chili peppers.
4. Go to Rob Roy and ask owner Zane Harris for something with mezcal. He loves mezcal, (What’s not to love?), and he makes a fine cocktail. The last time I was there, I told him he should have a Cinco de Mayo party, and he didn’t like that idea. We won’t hold that against him because we want the mezcal cocktail.
5. Make some margaritas at home and drink alongside these crazy Theo Chocolate tacos.

It’s a holiday designed for day drinking. Plan accordingly.

Tango on Capitol Hill has a special this Sunday, April 4 (or as Christians like to call it, Easter): a $5 tequila flight that includes Herradura Silver, Chamucos Reposado, and Cazadores Anejo. Nice.
Before you do that, though, you might want to go to brunch or something. Which is not to say you should delay getting your Easter buzz on. Head to Smith, for instance, for a pitcher of mimosas with your eggs Benedict (please note I did not say “eggs Benny,” and never will), or to Lola for its bloody mary with jalapeno-infused vodka, or a prosecco served with a scoop of—hello, delicious—sorbet.
That drink reminds me of Spring Hill and its grapefruit cooler: sparkling wine, fresh-squeezed grapefruit, and lillet.
If you come to find these places are booked come Sunday, check this master list of Easter brunches from Nosh Pit. And have a happy and buzzy bunny Sunday.

Green-beer wingdings will take place in Irish pubs all over town today, but the one to hit is Kell’s.

A very Irish band of the sort you can see all day at Kell’s.
It being St Patrick’s Day, you can pretty much stumble into any Irish bar around town and expect a party. But the one to hit is Kell’s, which opens at 10am (20 minutes from now).
There is a $20 cover—admission buys you a free t-shirt and the chance to hear no fewer than eight Irish bands. The party spills into an outdoor tent and nearby Post, which shares owners with Kell’s. Please don’t forget to eat—the food at Kell’s is relatively tasty, and will help absorb all the beer.
In other news, I just called Tom Douglas Restaurants and was informed that there are still about 10 tickets left for the beer blast tonight at Palace Ballroom. So if you want to get on that, call this number right now: 206-448-2001.
Finally, was anyone curious where the great Shane MacGowan himself might be playing tonight, as bands the world over cover his songs? I was, but there is no show date posted on his Myspace page. I’ll bet you two green beers he is doing a gig at Bill Gates’s private St Patty’s party on Mercer Island. Or perhaps in Mexico, playing for Carlos Slim, that Mexican telecom tycoon who is now richer than Bill Gates.

Tom Douglas offers lots of local micros plus food pairings for $35.

Patron saint of the boozies.
There are always a lot of bar offerings for St. Patty’s, but they can all seem to run together after awhile—Pogues cover band here, green beer there. Shamrocks everywhere.
So this year, let’s start things off with Tom Douglas’ Saint Patrick’s Day Beer Blast, to be held at Palace Ballroom on March 17 from 5 to 8pm. Entry is $35 per person, for this you can sample Irish ales from Snoqualmie, Big Al Brewing, Maritime Pacific, Elysian. Elliott Bay, Hales, Pike Brewing, and Georgetown Brewery. Douglas is fixing up some Irish snacks to pair with the brews, you know those will be good.
It’s funny. I’m not having the best day today, and the thought of going to this actually cheers me up. Tom Douglas is such a happymaker, have you noticed? He just knows how to make us happy. Order tickets by calling 206-448-2001.

Valentine's Day
Meet the “cocktail psychic” or have a champagne cocktail.
Posted by: Jessica Voelker on Feb 01, 2010 at 11:00AM
Just two weeks out from the so-called Hallmark Holiday, it’s time to start thinking about what you’re going to do.
First, from the Valentine’s Day press release pile, a drinking event:
Kerry Colburn is the author of a book called Good Drinks for Bad Days who calls herself a “cocktail psychic.” (I spent this morning struggling through the first four stages of grief with that term before arriving at acceptance. Really she just means she can tell you what to drink in order to cheer up a bad day. Can she really do this? I don’t know.) Colburn is hosting a Valentine’s Day party—pardon me, Anti Valentine’s Day party—at the bar at the Pan Pacific on February 11. It begins at 6pm.
Whatever your feelings about V-Day, you can’t deny it’s a great excuse to drink a champagne cocktail, otherwise known as joy in a flute. The basic model is pretty easy to make at home: you put a sugar cube at the bottom of a glass, douse it with a dash of Angostura bitters (the Angostura shortage that had bartenders stockpiling should be over by now, last time I checked it was in stock at DeLaurenti), slowly pour champagne to the top, and garnish with a lemon twist.
But it’s kind of a drink that is more fun to imbibe while out at some place romantic where they will offer all sorts of flavor embellishments, places like Bricco della Regina Anna on Queen Anne, like Sambar and Hazlewood in Ballard, like Poppy on Capitol Hill, or like 35th Street Bistro in Fremont.
