Bring in your tacky tiki mug. Get a free drink.
Posted by: Allecia Vermillion on Dec 29, 2011 at 03:20PM
Are you in possession of a wildly tacky (or even moderately tacky) tiki mug? Over at new Pike/Pine spot Chino’s, bar manager Veronika Groth spends every Tuesday celebrating these pseudo-Polynesian vessels. Bring in a tiki mug for the restaurant’s collection on Tuesdays and Groth will serve up one free tiki drink (except zombies) in that mug.
You can even keep your mug at Chino’s, with your name on it, for future (non-free) tiki drink imbibement. Owners Walter and Mari Lee are planning to set up some sort of cabinet or shelving situation to display all these fine pieces of barware, says Groth.
The former Poppy bar mistress has been busy resurrecting the golden era of tiki drinks since Chino’s opened earlier this month. While her rum and fresh juice-centric concoctions are far removed from the lame incarnations of recent decades, there’s no harm in enjoying her handiwork in a delightfully tacky mug.

Head to the English gin happy hour at Paratti Craft Bar tonight, and then do it all over again on Saturday.

There’s no such thing as a free drink, most of us learned that in the earliest moments of our 21st year on the planet (or earlier). But if you don’t mind some sponsored-style drinking, this comes pretty close: Head to Paratii Craft Bar in Ballard tonight, August 25 between 5 and 7pm to have a cocktail on Pernod-Ricard, parent company to Beefeater and Plymouth gins. Fine print: After the first 50 drinks, cocktails are $5 each.
If you can’t make it tonight, you’re in luck: This event will groundhog day itself on Saturday, August 27. What I mean is: Head to Paratti in Ballard on August 27 between 5 and 7pm to have a cocktail on Pernod-Ricard, parent company to Beefeater and Plymouth gins. Fine print: After the first 50 drinks, cocktails are $5 each.
Brand rep Andrew Bohrer will be on hand to answer all your burning English gin questions.

Tuesday=Free Balvenie tasting at the Washington Athletic Club
On Tuesday, May 10 the Balvanie Rare Craft Roadshow comes to Washington Athletic Club (1325 6th Avenue) from 7 to 9pm.
What does it all mean? Well, The Balvanie is a single malt scotch whiskey from the Speyside region in northeast Scotland (also from Speyside: Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, among others). It’s been around since 1893. Its website speaks of barley grown on the grounds that surround the gazillion-year-old castle that houses the distillery and an on-site cooperage and coppersmith. When you drink it you hear bagpipes and your pants take the form of a tartan kilt. (Allegedly).
The rare craft roadshow is of course aimed at familiarizing us with the product. Its two brand ambassadors are going all around the country hosting tastings. Tuesday, they are here. From what I gather they talk some about the whiskey and the distillery and then they give people whiskey. For free! There’s the 12-year, aged in two types of cask and the other 12-year—the Signature—aged in three types. Then there’s the single barrel 15-year, and the 14-year aged in casks once used to make rum in the Caribbean, etc, etc.
RSVP here before the event fills up and you don’t get to have any free whiskey.

Better Boozing 2011
Practice wine sniffing (and drink for free) this Saturday night in Ballard.
Posted by: Jessica Voelker on Jan 04, 2011 at 10:18AM
Know your aromas Stop by Dish It Up this weekend to sharpen your sniffing skills.
Something cool this weekend:
Shannon Jones is winemaker at Woodinville winery Hestia Cellars. He is teaming up with sommelier Cole Sisson this Saturday, January 8 to teach a free wine-sniffing class at Dish It Up’s Ballard location.
If you tend to scratch your head like a monkey when you hear people discussing wine aromas, you should definitely stop by. Wine aromas are described using foods and objects such as honey and chocolate and various berries and wet dog and skunk and cloves and bootstraps. Jones and Sisson are bringing some of these things (probably not the skunk, but who knows) to the class. You’ll smell what they bring, and then smell the wine themselves. Suddenly, everything will make sense. Bonus: You get to drink the wine.
The class is from 6 to 8pm. Since it’s held on the second Saturday of the month, Ballard Art Walk will be in full swing. So you might want to check that out too.

Patty Pan’s new 23rd and Madison location gives away the goods through Saturday.
Posted by: Jessica Voelker on Oct 21, 2010 at 10:54AM
Now through Saturday, get a free coffee drink at the new Patty Pan.
Patty Pan Soup and Salad Cafe is the new coffeshop from Devra Gartenstein, owner of the defunct Patty Pan Grill, a vegetarian tamale destination in Ballard.
The tiny property she has taken over at 2310 E Madison Street has been home to two previous coffee ventures in recent months: Cafe Char and Fixx.
Gartenstein is sticking with Fremont Coffee, the roaster that also supplied Fixx. And through Saturday, October 23, she is offering a free coffee—espresso drinks included—to customers.
Patty Pan is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30am to 3:30pm. Aside from coffee, Gartenstein will be serving handmade soups, salads, and stuffed breads. Also scones.

This week in free caffeinated beverages

It’s like rain on your wedding day: Starbucks wants you to stop using paper coffee cups. Irony aside, it’s a good thing they’re doing this and it involves you receiving free coffee. Bring your reusable coffee mug to Starbucks this Thursday, April 15 and your green-aproned barista will fill it up for free.
Meanwhile at Tully’s, every Friday in April customers get a free “barista” drink—so, espresso and whatnot—when they buy a pound of coffee. The Tully’s near Seattle Met’s office is staffed by the nicest people in the world, so if you’re near the Harbor Steps on Friday get your free coffee at that one.
And don’t forget that Fonte is offering a free coffee tasting every Saturday at 2pm.
