Exciting news for small batch-seeking locaboozers: Sound Spirits, a brand-new Interbay-based distillery, has submitted a license application to both the state and federal governments, with plans to open its tasting room/shop (at 1630 15th Ave W, Suite C) early next year.
I asked found/head distiller Steve Stone what we can expect.
When will you open shop?
We’re looking at a first quarter launch. You can watch our progress by checking in with us on Facebook.
Tell me about your products.
We have plans for vodka, gin, whiskey (with a grain bill that includes barley, wheat, and rye), brandy, absinthe and more. It’s going to take us a while to roll them all out.
What bars will stock Sound Spirits?
I’ve been getting the word out to all of the bars/bartenders that I feel would be interested in what we are doing. You know who we’re after: Zig Zag, Vessel, Rob Roy, The Hideout, Liberty, Tavern Law, Sambar, Oliver’s Twist, Sun Liquor, Barrio, Naga Lounge at Chantanee, Coppergate, Smith, etc. All the bars that are into the revival of better cocktails.
What’s the hardest part about opening a distillery in Washington?
Starting a distillery is hard, period. I’ve spoken with distillers from other parts of the country and each state presents different challenges. In the end, Washington isn’t such a bad place to be.
