Seattle Restaurant Openings
Expect a mix of “fusion and traditional dishes,” full-service bar.

Whether the Aspira building qualifies as downtown or Denny Triangle, I couldn’t tell you. But I do know this: Cynthia Hoang and her family are opening La Lot Vietnamese eatery at the base of the shiny tower at 1823 Terry Avenue.
Hoang is involved with several other restaurants in the area, including Pho To Chau and Cafe Pho, but says the concept of La Lot is “completely different… More wine and dine.” One assumes she’s referring to the sleek surroundings with floor-to-ceiling windows and trendy trimmings (there it is again: wallpaper), as seen on the La Lot website.
A bar seating 25 or so is in the center of the restaurant and will tender a decently stocked beer, wine, and cocktail list. Food-wise we’re looking at “a mixture of fusion and traditional dishes,” says Hoang.
Hoang is hoping to open La Lot, named for the leaf predominant in Vietnamese cooking, by the end of the month but is realistic about such things—a mid-February target is more likely.

Green Leaf spring rolls are destined for Belltown come February. Photo courtesy Green Leaf.
Those who were hoping to usher in the new year with banh xeo and vermicelli bowls at the new Green Leaf near Olympic Sculpture Park will have to table that expectation.
Owner Ridgley Kuang tells Nosh his plan to launch a second location of his family’s lauded Vietnamese restaurant in mid-January has been tripped up by your typical delays. Now he’s looking at an end of February debut for the new kitchen at 2800 First Avenue.
Might as well get used to it folks, surely this is the first of many times we’ll be waiting with bated breath in 2012.

Green Leaf banh xeo are coming to Belltown.
Green Leaf, esteemed by many as one of—if not the—best Vietnamese restaurants in Seattle, is planning to open a second location near Olympic Sculpture Park.
Ridgley Kuang, who owns the restaurant along with members of his family, says a remodel is underway at 2800 First Avenue, site of the expansion. “We are expecting it will open for business in two or three months,” he adds.
Green Leaf opened in the ID in December of 2005 and promptly drew crowds with delectable phos, vermicelli bowls, and banh xeo, or rice-flour pancakes. Fun fact: in a recent Seattle Met poll, local chefs said Green Leaf was among the restaurants they most admire in the city.

Sun Bakery and Deli also gets a mention.

T magazine includes Saigon Deli in its best banh mi roundup. Photo courtesy yelp.
Will you look at that. We and T agree that Saigon Deli fashions some of the best banh mi out there.
The magazine for The New York Times ruminates on where to find the country’s 13 top versions of the Vietnamese baguettes, and the ID counter not only gets the first mention, but also scores the lead photo.
In the writeup, T calls out Saigon’s quirks—the grimy digs, the “disaster” that is trying to park—but hails the sandwiches as “second to none, especially the $3 banh mi dac biet—pork, ham and chicken liver pâté.”
Of course you already know this—Saigon Deli got top marks in our Asian Food feature —but perhaps you are less familiar with Sun Bakery and Deli. T gives the Jackson Street joint props for its “combo sandwich made with Chinese-style ham, grilled chicken and cucumber.”

Monsoon in Bellevue and Capitol Hill (pictured here) get free-ky for the Lunar New Year.
Here is one reason you want to eat at Monsoon: the restaurants serve up some of Seattle’s best Vietnamese cuisine.
Here is another reason: this weekend both the Capitol Hill and Bellevue locations are handing out freebies in celebration of the Lunar New Year. Will Mason, manager of the Monsoon on 19th, says patrons will receive gratis mochi dumplings dressed in a ginger syrup. What are mochi dumplings? They’re plumped with sticky rice, according to Mason.
The freebies are to be had Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
