The Weekly Spread: Jalapeno-Mint Chutney at Hopvine Pub

The chef adds yogurt to offset the heat from this fresh Spring chop-up. It’s still pretty spicy.

The condiment in question The Hopvine Pub’s jalapeno-mint chutney, a bright chop-up that’s added to the baked turkey-and-chutney sandwich: roasted turkey and Swiss cheese piled between slices of whole wheat bread from Essential Baking.

Made by The Hopvine’s Michael Congdon, more famous for the pub’s boldly flavored soups. “I’ve been making chutneys for years,” says Congdon, who adds that East Indian cuisine was one of the first that he explored as a chef.

Traditional East Indian chutneys are vegan, and that’s how Congdon makes this one at home. At the pub, however, “a lot of people complained that it was too hot” so he added yogurt. The chutney still packs heat—your server will likely offer a word of warning—but thanks to the cooling effect of the yogurt it’s like a slap in the face without the sting that follows.

Made with Mint, jalapenos, green onions, ginger, salt, sugar, lemon juice, and plain Greek yogurt. “I avoid nonfat and lowfat yogurt at all costs,” says Congdon.

Available Now! Each season, the Hopvine changes up its chutney, and the jalapeno-mint is served strictly during spring. Come summer, Congdon will switch to a cooked peach chutney; Fall’s the moment for raw cashew chutney—the chef’s favorite. In winter he cooks up a mango spread for the sandwich.

Parting thought You can order the sandwich by the half and pair it with one of Congdon’s soups. The pub is currently serving the garlic soup, a perennial favorite made with garlic (fresh and roasted), herbs, cream, white wine, croutons, and Swiss cheese. Get there now if you want some; Hopvine will be changing things up for summer soon.

Delicious sandwiches prevail at Elliott Bay Cafe on Capitol Hill and in Pioneer Square.

Since we last chatted Seattle’s best sandwiches, several of our go-to shacks shuttered—thanks for the memories, Roy’s BBQ and Rizzo’s—and we’ve welcomed some newcomers—hola, Other Coast Café on Capitol Hill, Seatown To Go. So we here at Nosh thought it due time for an updated roundup of between-sliced-bread winners.

Herein, and mapped for your ease, some favorite sandwich spots. Note not all maintain sandwich-exclusive menus. Nor is this list totally and completely and utterly exhaustive—it’s just where we’re heading when the hankering for a bready handheld takes grip.

See you at lunch?

What Happened to Ni Sandwich?

The Broadway cheap eats destination goes dark.

Email
Ni

Capitol Hill’s Ni Sandwich, shortly after opening in May 2010.

Well, that was short-lived.

Signs indicate Ni Sandwich, the Broadway banh mi counter that opened mid-May, is closed: the space now belongs to the tumbleweeds, and a call to the deli reveals a disconnected phone line.

Though the prices were right—sandwiches topped out at under $4—Ni failed to find a steady crowd.

Anyone know what’s up?

Homegrown Nixes Late-Night Hours at Capitol Hill Store

Last chance to soak up some fun at the sandwich shop, chums.

No more of this at 2am: Homegrown on Capitol Hill ditches late-night hours. Photo courtesy the establishment.

UPDATE 1/7 at 3pm Of the change in hours, co-owner Ben Friedman says: “It’s mainly a location thing—when it’s this cold out, not as many people are down to walk as far for some steak frites and catfish hushpuppies…”

Bummer news, boozers. Homegrown on Capitol Hill is nixing Friday and Saturday late-night hours. This is the last weekend the Melrose Market shop will cater to night owls and stay open until 3am, but according to a Facebook post, the powers that be “might bring it back in the summertime.”

What gives? I’ve got a message in with co-owner Ben Friedman and will let you know when I hear back.

More importantly, does this spell the end of the deep-fried Bluffernutter?

Capitol Hill Gets Another Late-Nightish Pit Stop

The Other Coast Cafe serves sandwiches until midnight on Pike.

The Other Coast Cafe is open and ready to feed Cap Hill bar crawlers.

The hours at the just-opened Capitol Hill branch of Other Coast Cafe aren’t as brazen as these additions to the nabe’s late-night munch bunch—the cafe is open until midnight daily. Still, it’d be prudent to keep it on your beer-goggled radar. The sandwiches—chin-drippy, plump—make for a tasty barhop refuel. Especially of note is the “Rajun Cajun:” spicy seasoned turkey, melted pepper jack cheese, and a salsa mayo garnished with tomato and onion and served warm.

And while you’re at it, also consider these 38 restaurants. On Fridays and Saturdays their kitchens serve until midnight or later.

Homegrown brings sustainable sammies to Queen Anne Ave.

Here’s news befitting of National Sandwich Day: The Queen Anne Homegrown is now open.

The third branch of the sustainable sandwich counter comes four months after co-owners Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis set up shop in the Melrose Market—home to the drunk muncher triple-dog-dare-you deep-fried Bluffernutter.

The Queen Anne outpost is open daily 8am-4pm, with dinner hours slated for the coming weeks.

Which nabe is next, guys?

It’s National Sandwich Day

Let’s eat sandwiches.

It’s National Sandwich Day, obey your instincts.

Is your nervous system hungover from all those election day frizzle frazzles? Everyone knows that the cure for hangover is sandwich. And since it’s National Sandwich Day well…let’s eat sandwiches.

We’ve told you before about our favorite Seattle ’wiches. If you haven’t tried them all, today seems like the right day to do it.

Also for vegetarians, healthy eaters, and/or people like me that have an undying love for good, garlicky hummus, may I suggest the hungry artist roll-up at Paloma? I had one yesterday and found it quite delectable. It’s feta, hummus, (creamy Lebanese style, not the pasty stuff), and vinegary tomato salad wrapped up in a fresh, pillowy pita and served with a spinach salad.

If You’re Looking for a Good Sandwich This Weekend…

Head to Rizzo’s French Dip in Ballard.

Weekend plans: French dipping at Rizzo’s.

If you’re in Ballard this weekend and looking for a bite, why not do as Nancy Leson suggests and make your way to Rizzo’s French Dip.

If you haven’t yet heard, last week the owner of the sandwich stand, one Kenny Johnson, heroically rescued three-year-old Anna Kotowicz from a blazing car wreck that would take the life of her father, Andy.

Rizzo’s is open Saturday 11am-8pm and Sunday 11am-7pm, so stop in and show him a hero’s appreciation.

Our condolences to friends and family of Andy Kotowicz.

What would you do for this sandwich?

We know how much you love Homegrown, that land of all-natural, insanely tasty sandwiches served in sustainable packaging in two locations—-Melrose Market and Fremont—-with another opening next month on Queen Anne.

Well do you love it this much? Because the Homegrown gents just wrote to inform us that on Halloween this Sunday, anyone who comes into Homegrown dressed as the Earl of Sandwich or the Count of Monte Cristo gets his/her sandwich free and is entered into their Earl of the Year contest.

And what is the Earl of the Year contest, you ask? It’s the contest that awards the most creative and most unique costumes with homegrown gift cards and free tee-shirts and totes.

We are talking powdered wigs and coats that have tails, people. On the other hand…we are talking spicy jalapeno meatloaf sandwiches made with organic chuck, whole milk cheddar, Zoe’s bacon, horseradish Dijon, hazelnut Romesco, and mixed greens on whole-grain. Man we love this joint.

Where’s that powdered wig again?

New Hours for Homegrown

Homegrown in Melrose Market is introducing a late-night menu.

The bad news: The Fremont Homegrown is nixing the weekend dinner hours it initiated in May.

The good news: Come Monday, August 16 the sandwich shop’s Melrose Market location will take them on daily, giving Cap Hill–goers until 8pm to get their Bluffernutter fix.

The even better news: Also debuting next week is Homegrown’s late-night menu, which means on Friday and Saturday relish in round two of Bluffernutter-ing (maybe with a side of catfish hushpuppies?) as late as 3am.

The menu at the Capitol Hill branch of Homegrown, located in the Melrose Market.

After nearly a month of delays, the Melrose Market location of Homegrown, the second for the sustainable sandwich shop, is open as of Monday, July 12.

Right now the hours are set for 8am-4pm. Co-owner Ben Friedman expects the weekend late-night menu and dinner service will be offered by the end of summer.

With Baguette Box just around the corner, the opening has me wondering: Which will become the sandwich spot of choice for lower Pike/Pine denizens?
