Another One for Mother’s Day Brunch Consideration: Golden Beetle

Because nothing says “I love you, mom” like a goat confit omelet.

The interior of Golden Beetle in Ballard.

Should you still be on the hunt for a spot to take mom on Sunday, and if you’ve been wanting to try the place but haven’t yet scored a reservation, don’t forget Golden Beetle just joined the brunch game.

For Mother’s Day, the new Maria Hines restaurant will cook up four types of crepes (caramelized apple sounds pretty good), plus roasted eggplant omelet with lacinato kale, feta, and herbs. But if meat strikes Mom’s fancy, don’t pass up the option to add goat confit to that omelet or the lamb scramble made with harissa and spinach.

Brunch service runs from 10-2. Call for reservations.

Two ways to a mother’s heart: flowers, a tasty brunch.

Almost all of the restaurants featured in last month’s Easter brunch roundup are holding court this Sunday, so in the interest of avoiding repeats, Nosh points you to six other options for feting the special lady.

Allium on Orcas 10—2
Hop the 10:35 ferry to Orcas Island, where Mom is treated to fresh fruit with vanilla cream and a hint of Grand Marnier and an entree of baked ham with sour cherries, wild mushroom and truffle medley, or halibut with tarragon pesto. $39/adult; reservations recommended.

BOKA Kitchen and Bar 8—2:30
Start with the generous seafood platter then move on to the inventive mains like braised veal cheek hash. Individual items $9-$15/person; call for reservations.

Cafe Flora 9—2
The highlights of this vegetarian repast? Hibiscus scones and orange cinnamon twists, truffled asparagus benedict, spring foraged tartlet, and a huckleberry chevre French toast. $23/adults, $14/children; reservations recommended.

Piatti Ristorante and Bar 10—3
Let Mumsie kick back with a sparkling pomegranate mimosa or a peach nectar bellini while the rest of the family feasts on rock shrimp scramble, eggs pomodoro, or omelet with rosemary ham. Individual items $11.50-12.60/person, $6.50 for kids brunch; reservations recommended.

Volunteer Park Cafe 8—4:30
Locally sourced, farm fresh ingredients perk up this four-course family style meal featuring chilled English pea bisque, olive oil poached halibut, seasonal greens with citrus vinaigrette, herb roasted lamb rack, and strawberry shortcake. $65/adults, $15/child; reservations recommended.

Westport Winery 10—3
Partake in a Fête de Mères while raising money for the Westport Arts Festival. Main courses include a benedictine quiche, baked french toast with pecan streusel, roasted rosemary potatoes, apple sausages, and a raspberry velvet pie. Chase the meal with a walk in the sculpture garden. $35/person; call for reservations.

Mother’s Day Critic’s Picks

Take the dear lady someplace to charm her socks off

Email
Old_mother

She’s hungry, people!

Let’s face it: Mom digs a little flirtation between courses. “I may be old and married, but I’m not blind,” she says. With disturbing frequency in fact. So trust us, as long as the food’s up to a certain baseline (Mom’s a food snob too) she wants to be taken somewhere with a little eye-candy at the door, a little sex appeal in the kitchen.

Like Tavolata or Spinasse, where the pastas are as sublime as the view of the chefs in the open kitchen.

In the “Boyish Greeting at the Door” department, one thinks immediately of the puckish Phred Westfall at Elemental @ Gasworks or the adorable Dustin Ronspies, chef and co-owner of the boutique Art of the Table. Alas, neither is open on Sunday.

Time, perhaps, to consecrate that hallowed night, Mother’s Day Eve…?

Or what of that timeless archetype, The Dashing Impresario? Like Paul MacKay at El Gaucho, or Joe Vilardi at Bis on Main in Bellevue? Table-hoppers both…and elegant ones.

If Mom likes her empresarios, ahem…younger, escort the old Cougar to MistralKitchen for a glimpse of foodie cutie William Belickis, or to good old Canlis where the young pair of third-generation owners, Mark and Brian Canlis, will fawn on cue.

Finally, anything Tom Douglas is likely to set mom’s heart a thumpin’. Because if there’s one thing Seattle’s most prolific restaurateur does well..besides crab cakes…it’s work a room full of women. Though his spokesfolks will not commit to where he’ll be that day, brunch is on deck for Etta’s Seafood, Dahlia Lounge, and Lola.

This critic prefers brunch at the latter…but the old charmer’s likely to charm your mom’s socks off at any one of ’em.

Where to Eat on Mother’s Day

Spoil the old gal AND support your struggling local restaurant

Email

Not for nothing is this Sunday the biggest day in the restaurant year. Mom shouldn’t have to cook and you sure as shootin’ aren’t going to.

So go ahead, son, crank open that wallet. There you go. Now grasp hold of that sparkly platinum thing inside. That’s the one. Say it with me: c-r-e-d-i-t c-a-r-d. Remember your credit card? Remember spending?

We thought you did.

A few places for you to practice your new skill this weekend:

Andaluca will serve breakfast (7am to noon) and lunch/dinner (3pm-9pm) off its Mediterranean menu, which includes pintxos, tapas, and paella. Or choose the pris-fixe special: pintxos, entree, and dessert for $30.

Got a cultural mom? Take her to the Seattle Art Museum and enjoy a meal in its terrific cafe, Taste. Either pay $35 per person (includes a three-course lunch, admission for one to the museum, and a gift from the SAM shop) or $100 per person (all of the above plus a SAM family membership). Remember: kids 12 and under get into the museum free, every day of the year.

Eastsiders, take note: At Redmond’s Pomegranate Bistro from 9am to 2pm, Mother’s Day brunch will start with Mama Royals (Pama Liquor & French Sparkling Cremant) plus donut holes with strawberries and cream…and just get better from there, with entrees from cardamom French toast to smoked salmon Bennies. $28 per grownup; $10 per kid.

At the lovely Campagne, Sunday’s menu will include sparkling wine cocktails, Dungeness and leek quiche, black truffle omelettes with housemade sausage, and pan-roasted beef with fried eggs and smoky harissa rouille. Yum.

Or, for a little hobnobbing with the celeb chefs, bring Mom to Palace Kitchen’s Ballroom where you can brunch with owner Tom Douglas at his “Mom and Tom” brunch. Douglas will conduct a cooking demo of the dishes on offer (plus give away the recipes), and award prizes for the top ten hats worn to the occasion. Should be a hoot. Starts at 11am; tickets are $60 a pop.

For a Tuscan feast, bring Mom to Ballard’s Volterra for chestnut pancakes and wild mushroom and truffle cheese scrambles, to wash down with a peach thyme Bellini or five. Brunch happens from 9am to 2pm that day…with dinner starting just three hours later.

On North Capitol Hill, neighb favorite Tidbit Bistro will be peddling its brunch menu items, including frittatas and crepes…while across town at Elliott’s Oyster House the order of the day will be smoked salmon scrambles, Tenderloin Bennies…and stiff Bloody Marys.

Finally, for those who are up for nine courses and $189 per person—what better day than Mother’s Day to get out to the famous Herbfarm? It’s dinner, starting at 4:30, preceeded by a tour of the lovely gardens. And this year, to sweeten the deal, a chauffeur-driven town car from anywhere around Seattle is included in the cost.

So you, dear child, can get a little soppy right along with Mumsie.

Find them all.
