Cafe Lago’s $100 Take-Home Lasagne

The Montlake restaurant has been doing a 10-person takeout tray for years. Who knew?

The lasagne in question.

If you order the much-loved lasagne—noodles surrounded by ricotta, bechamel, and tomato sauce—while dining at Cafe Lago in Montlake, it will run you $19.95. You can cut that price in half by ordering a takeout version, but the catch is that you need to gather nine friends to eat it with you. The restaurant offers a one-size-only lasagne to go; it comes in a 10×15×2 inch tray, serves ten people, and costs $100.

If you want to order one, call 48 hours in advance. Lago will even make it in the pan of your choosing—ideal for fakers trying to pass the casserole off as if it was their beloved nonna’s secret recipe—but it should go without saying that your container should be around the same size as the ones the restaurant uses.

Another thing you can take out from Lago: tiramisu. A 15-person portion costs $65 but you’ve got to order it five days in advance due to the complicated processes involved in preparing homemade mascarpone and lady fingers.

Was it really 20 years ago that Cafe Lago opened in Montlake, opening Seattle’s eyes to homemade pasta, wood-fired pizzas, and the astonishing featherweight delicacy of perfect lasagne?

Apparently so, though this critic remembers the city’s collective gasp of delight as if it happened yesterday. Come relive the magic as Cafe Lago celebrates its big 2-0 all month. A few highlights:

A happy hour menu offers classics like pizzas, gnocchi, and salads for $4, Mondays through Thursdays in October, 5pm to 7pm.

On October 27th, drop in to grab a pizza for $9.95—the price of its pies in 1990, and about half the price they sell for now.

Then mark this date: November 14. That’s the night Lago culminates its festivities with a 7-course dinner with wine, starring such crowdpleasers as butternut squash with hazelnut goat cheese, braised short ribs with parmesan polenta…and that lasagne. Reserve a spot, $99 per person excluding gratuity.

In an October article for Bon Appetit, local scribe/pizza wunderkind Molly Wizenberg goes giddy for the meatballs at Cafe Lago. Over the course of seven years, she writes, she’s tried many meatballs, both at restaurants and from recipes, but “none could nail both taste and texture….I never found one that got it all right until I ordered the fettuccine and meatballs at Cafe Lago.” Makes you wonder what they’ve got going in that kitchen, no?

Find out next week when the Lago folks let diners backstage and teach them to cook like Lagos cook. As part of an ongoing twentieth anniversary celebration, chef and co-owner Jordi Viladas and several toques are leading four free classes. The focus, several of the Montlake restaurant’s favorite dishes.

Each session starts at 5pm and lasts one hour. Space is limited, so call 206-329-800 to secure a spot. Here’s what Viladas is making and when:

October 4: Eggplant and mint ravioli and Lago marinara.
October 5: Carbonara and putanesca sauces and pasta to go with both.
October 11: Butternut squash ravioli.
October 12: Bolognese sauce with fettuccine. Promised to “make you famous among your friends and family.”
