Nosh Pit Weekly Planner: Memorial Day Edition

This week: free burgers, free ice cream, an upcoming Skelly and the Bean event, and a Seattlecentric cookbook signing.

Memorial Day and National Burger Day are officially one in the same this year.

WEDNESDAY May 23
Whole Food Veggie Happy Hour Benefit
For one day only: dodge the accidental $20 hot food bar trip; there will be a $6 vegetarian dinner from 5 to 7 at the Westlake Whole Foods. Baked artichokes, asparagus, and corn fritters are on the menu, and all the food sales go to Forterra, a northwest conservation group.

SATURDAY May 26
Mischief Distillery at Tulalip
Tulalip Casino Resort is bringing the Fremont craft distiller out for the summer launch party of the patio at the Mpulse Lounge. Though the letter “i” apparently won’t be in attendance, the founder of Mischief will. The $30 ticket gets you an afternoon of live music, giveaways, liquor-laced snacks, drinks, and…mischief.

Revelry at Col Solare
The first of the summer’s Auction of Washington Wine events takes place at Col Solare winery on Saturday. Aside from the beautiful scenery and 21 winemakers planned to pour at the event there’s an even better reason to make this the highlight of your Memorial weekend getaway: it’ll be raising money for uncompensated care at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

MONDAY May 28 (Memorial Day)
Free Burgers at Li’l Woody’s
The 28th is doing double holiday duty his year: Memorial Day and National Hamburger Day. Actually, there’s some serious debate about the true day o’ the burger, whether it’s May or July 28. The Capitol Hill burger joint is celebrating the May date with free burgers for all from 2 to 5.

Free Scoops for Vets
Old School Frozen Custard is keeping its Memorial celebration, well, old school, and honoring the veterans who the holiday is actually for with free scoops for those who’ve served.

Sidetrack Distillery Feast
The berry liqueur–making crew out at Lazy River Farm is putting on a big Memorial Day party. Food, beer, wine, and sips of Sidetrack are all on the docket. The party starts at 2:30.

Raw, Vegan Potluck
Mayonnaise-y potato salad and a juicy burger not your thing? Those who aren’t taking advantage of Memorial Day as a day to indulge in an entire week’s worth of fat and sugar are meeting up at Discovery Park for a potluck. Drums and durian, that um…pungent fruit, are encouraged.

TUESDAY May 29
African Feast at Skelly and the Bean
From Morocco all the way down to South Africa in four courses for just $40 bucks. Arrive at Skelly and the Bean at 5 for drinks, and dinner begins at 6.

Seattle Cookbooks at Elliott Bay Book Co.
Seattle-o-rama at Elliott Bay. Molly Moon (of… Molly Moon’s), Mark Klebeck (of Top Pot Doughnuts), and Jess Thomson (of Pike Place Market Recipes) will all be at the bookstore signing their books from 5 to 6:30. And there’s promise of samples from all the mouth-watering books…

May Corner Table at Cafe Presse
This month’s Corner Table dinner is a benefit for Green Plate Special, the Central District nonprofit that teaches kids from primarily low-income families how to garden and cook. The Corner table menu will be put together by Laura Dewell, head of Green Plate, and the dinner is $55 with wine pairings. Call Cafe Presse to save your spot at the 6:30 dinner.

BEYOND
July 26 This year marks the third anniversary of the popular event Feast on the Farm. Ethan Stowell cooks, Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready jams, and diners get to ride tractors around the farm before sitting down to a salmon-safe, local-food dinner under the sky. Tickets went on sale May 10, and you’d better act fast to get a spot on that tractor.

Molly Moon’s Capitol Hill Expansion Plans Postponed

But a collaboration with Beecher’s is in the works.

Email
120207_foodprty-9

Mix this with Molly Moon’s and you’ve got yourself a whopping dose of dairy.

Molly Moon Neitzel is tabling her expansion plans on Capitol Hill. In February Neitzel acquired the storefront left vacant by kid clothier Flora and Henri with the hopes of beefing up the kitchen of her neighboring Pine Street ice cream shop.

Neitzel will retain the prime piece of real estate, namely for administrative purposes—at least for now. The end goal is still to turn it into an open work space where, for example, toppings and sauces are produced (yes, there are plans to retail those in the future), or freshly baked cookies for the Parker’s Praline sandwiches can cool. But Neitzel doesn’t envision that happening until the summer of 2013. Meantime, Neitzel will also likely host events in there, such as ice cream demos—something she’ll be doing a lot of in the coming weeks during her national book tour.

In related news, the confectioner has teamed up with another local dairy kingpin for a new flavor. Beecher’s Flagship will hit all Molly Moon’s locations on May 17. Pints can be purchased at the Beecher’s in Pike Place Market and the Seattle and Bellevue Pasta and Co stores. The ice cream will grace the dessert menu at Mercer Island restaurant Bennett’s as well.

As Neitzel herself suggested, a scoop would pair swimmingly with a piece of apple pie. Yum.

A Terrible Beauty
Seattle Weekly brings word via Facebook that the Irish pub is opening its third location this summer in South Lake Union.

Ballard Pizza Co.
Ethan Stowell slices…they’re getting closer and closer. No pizza till next week officially, but we’ve got a peek inside.

Essex Bar
That collective squeal heard throughout the city Monday was prompted by the news that Delancey owners Brandon Pettit and Molly Wizenberg are turning the neighboring umbrella store into a craft cocktail bar. Seattle Magazine has more details on the food and drink menu, but here’s a teaser: Don’t expect pizza.

Isola Bella, Sicilian Cafe
Per Eater Seattle, local chef and restaurateur Enza Sorrentino is moving into a space on First and Bell. She’s planning to dispense baked goods and coffee by day, and arancini, meatballs, and pizza by the slice at night.

Molly Moon’s and Trophy Cupcakes (…and Cupcake Royale)
The city’s sweets magnates are playing do-si-do: Cupcake Royale, which is launching an ice cream line, is taking up residency at the downtown Chocolate Box space. Molly Moon’s Downtown Shop to Shutter

With Cupcake Royale taking over the storefront at 108 Pine Street, the ice cream purveyor is getting the boot.

The Molly Moon’s at 108 Pine Street is closing.

Cupcake Royale is moving in at 108 Pine, with a new line of ice creams in tow. The current occupant of the address, The Chocolate Box, will reportedly continue to operate in a smaller space next door. But what does the move spell for Molly Moon’s, which last summer opened an ice cream counter there?

“That means we have to shut down,” confirmed a disheartened Molly Moon Neitzel Friday morning. Neitzel said she envisioned operating at the location for ten years, if not more, and had known for awhile that some shakeups were in order. “I tried to work something out so I could stay in that space,” she continued, but Cupcake Royale owner Jody Hall was intent on making her own ice cream. Neitzel wasn’t sure when the closure will happen.

All’s not lost for Neitzel, however. There’s that Capitol Hill expansion, for one, and she hopes to establish a downtown presence elsewhere. Also on the horizon is a partnership with Trophy Cupcakes. Neitzel and the local confectioner have been in talks since last summer and are looking to unveil their collaboration soon.

So, Cupcake Royale is getting into ice cream. And ice cream purveyor Molly Moon’s is getting into cupcakes. Got it?

The newest outpost of the local brewery opened Monday, March 26, in Lake City. The Washington Beer Blog has photos of the interior and some of the food.

Tokyo Dog
The Japanese hot dog truck had its first outing in Fremont this past week, and it sounds like a success. These JapaDog–style hot dogs are topped with east-west flavors, such as furikaka and bacon and the like. Facebook says the truck will be in Wallingford on Saturdays, Fremont on Sundays, for now.

Five Hooks Fish Grill
Eater Seattle reports that the renewable seafood joint is now open in Queen Anne. The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license just yet, but it does have a very affordable menu.

Cafe Rozella
It’s technically a reopening, but the French-Nordic (think lox and crepes) cafe in West Seattle will have a little soft opening party on Thursday, March 29, then a public grand reopening on April 20.

CLOSINGS

Detention
The U-District bar (that used to be a Po Dog) is closed, says The Stranger. Maybe the owner, Laura Olson, is simplifying, seeing as she just added a brand new Ballard Po Dog to her roster of restaurants and bars.

HG Lodge
The owner (also owner of burger joint Li’l Woody’s) is shutting down the nightclub to make way for a sports bar called 95 Slide that will have a respectable food menu, says Capitol Hill Seattle blog.

SHIFT CHANGES

Chino’s
The self-labeled “urban tiki house Taiwanese cantina” hired Evan Martin (recently departed from Ba Bar) and has big tiki plans.

Tini Bigs and Vito’s
Ian Cargill, previously of Tavern Law Shorty’s will now be behind the bar at Tini Bigs and Vito’s.

RELOCATIONS

Joule
Good news for Fremont, sad news for Wallingford. Chef-spouses Rachel Yang and Seif Chirchi are moving Joule into the Fremont Collective on Stone Way this summer.

COMING SOON

My Chef Lynn
A chef from Issaquah has decided to launch herself into the food truck world (Having a car dealer husband helped). She’ll be mostly on the Eastside, but may be Fremont too, slinging lamb sliders and smoked meats.

Yard House
What was once books will soon be beer. The closed Borders location near Fourth and Pike is slated to become Yard House, the Seattle outpost of a California chain.

Molly Moon’s
The mini-Molly’s in Madrona will reopen for the summer on May 1. The pop-up shop will have five flavors and those irresistibly delicious-smelling waffle cones. Also: shakes, sundaes, ice cream sandwiches, and pints from the little shop every day from noon to 10.

OPENING DELAYS

Marination
The June opening of the West Seattle Marination Station has been delayed by permitting problems. West Seattle Blog says that there will be an update in late spring, and until then Alki Kayak Tours will be the “interim concessionaire.”

CLOSINGS

Kabab House
Greenwood’s Kabab House is closing down this Sunday, according to Phinneywood.

SHIFT CHANGES

Ba Bar
Don’t bother with Tivo-ing soap operas—just drop by Ba Bar on a Sunday night. For the second time since the restaurant opened last summer, the bar manager is out, this time as a result of a dinnertime confrontation. Hanna Raskin has the whole tale on Voracious.

Local 360
Mike Robertshaw was cut from the Local 360 team over the weekend. The firing came as a surprise for Robertshaw, but, silver lining: it’s giving him a chance to join forces with a friend for an upcoming restaurant project.

COMING SOON

Molly Moon’s
Last week, word came out that Molly Moon’s would be expanding into the recently vacated space right next door to the Pine Street shop, but questions about what would go into the space were answered with a Willy Wonka riddle. Now we know what’s up: come summer it will become a kitchen on display that Wonka himself would admire.

Hallava Falafel
Georgetown food truck Hallava Falafel is adding on a mobile counterpart soon, with a few new menu items and a much larger roaming area—Ballard, Capitol Hill, and South Lake Union will all soon have the yellow truck on their streets.

The Gerald
Surprise, surprise: something is opening in Ballard. Seattle guys Kevin Rothrock and Elliot Westwater are opening The Gerald later in March on Ballard Ave, offering gussied-up comfort food and classic cocktails.

Skillet
Josh Henderson will be expanding Skillet into the newly revamped Seattle Center House later this summer. The space is not exactly a diner, not exactly a food cart, but something in-between: a grab-and-go counter slinging Skillet favorites.

Marination
After some fuss, Marination’s second brick-and-mortar is slated to open by July, says West Seattle Blog. Marination was given the concessionaire contract that had long been held by Alki Crab and Fish, but it seems that things have settled down out west and Marination will be excitedly welcomed into the community.

The Neighbor Lady
A new mostly vegetarian bar will be opening at 3rd and Union soon, brought to the Central District by the same people behind The Twilight Exit, just a few blocks away, says CDN.

Xplosive
Cody Bay of Seattle Magazine reports that there’s another new food truck comin’ right up: this time a Vietnamese-Filipino hybrid.

Naos
Fremont Universe reports that the neighborhood is getting a juice bar in the old Cool Whirled space. Naos is planned to open mid-March and serve not just juice and smoothies but coffee, beer, and wine as well, under the motto Community, Sustainability, Funk.

Seattle Coffee Works
The coffee shop is opening an outpost in Ballard on the corner of 22nd and Market Street, planned to open March 24th, says the Ballard News Tribune.

RollinQ
So much to look forward to. Another food truck, coming soon. This one a southern barbeque truck, complete with custom mobile smoker.

Details on the Molly Moon’s Capitol Hill Expansion

The Pine Street ice cream shop is taking over the former Flora and Henri storefront.

Email
Mollymoons

Come summer, you watch this get made at the Molly Moon’s on Capitol Hill.

Earlier in the week CHS dropped news of a possible expansion of the Pine Street Molly Moon’s. The blog reported the ice cream shop will take over the neighboring space left vacant by child clothier Flora and Henri. When CHS pressed owner Molly Moon Neitzel for details she wouldn’t divulge much, but instead responded rather curiously with a riddle from Willy Wonka:

If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanna change the world?
There’s nothing to it!

Huh? Turns out there’s a reason for the rhyme.

During a phone call Friday Neitzel confirmed she is indeed taking over the storefront and will convert it into a Willy Wonka-esque “kitchen on display.”

“The space came up and I felt like we had to jump on it,” she said. The kitchen at the Capitol Hill shop, which also produces ice cream for the truck and Madrona and downtown spots, is “busting at the seams.”

Plans are still very much in the air, but Neitzel does intend to assume the space in its entirety. She envisions patrons being able to watch workers as they prep batches of Balsamic Strawberry or waffle cones. Neitzel said she believes strongly in transparency of ingredients, so it “feels only fitting we should show more of that. To make what we do in our kitchen more visible.”

In the coming months Neitzel will embark on a nationwide book tour; during the stops she will demo how to make ice cream at home. Upon returning to Seattle Neitzel imagines hosting similar events in her newfound real estate.

There’s no firm timeline for the build-out, but look for the space to open in the summer.

The Other Washington

Dispatches from D.C.: Seattle Business Leaders Meet with Obama Officials

Among the invitees was Molly Moon Neitzel. She rehashes the experience.

Email
Mmmmollymoon

Molly Moon Neitzel, owner of Molly Moon’s ice cream shop, was one of several locals to meet with top economists in D.C. last week.

Last week the mayor’s office sent a handful of Seattle business leaders to the other Washington to meet with members of the Obama administration. The four-hour confab was part of an initiative in which representatives from several American cities are brought in to discuss economic policies and job creation.

Repping Seattle were marquee businesses like Microsoft and Boeing alongside smaller companies such as Cupcake Royale and Molly Moon’s.

We caught up with Molly Moon Neitzel, owner of the eponymous ice cream company, to learn about the experience—and of course, what she ate.

SM: So there were only Seattle businesses at the meeting?

MMN: Right. [The administration] has been inviting different business owners from various cities on different days. It was nice because we were able to talk specifically about Seattle’s economy and job creation with some of the smartest people in the country. We spoke with Obama’s chief economist and he gave us a great presentation.

SM: How many Seattle business owners where there?

MMN: You know, I’m not sure. I think maybe 15 or 20. I was the smallest business.

SM: Did the views differ between small business owners like yourself and larger businesses?

MMN: One of the themes from everyone was access to capital. Even with perfect credit and great numbers for years, everyone is having a hard time getting access to capital from banks. Congress and the Obama administration have done some interesting things through the Small Business Administration, but either we don’t know how to access that capital or the money that they pushed through community banks isn’t being doled out. It was good for the administration to hear, and I think they’ve been hearing it from the various business leaders that have been attending these meetings—that it’s still hard to get loans. And it’s a little ridiculous.

SM: Was there anyone you met that was particularly interesting?

MMN: I was really impressed with the economist who spoke to us, Mark Doms, and the facilitator of the meeting, Ari Matusiak—he was pretty incredible. I was just struck by how smart everyone was. These are incredible minds, and they did a lot of listening as well as a lot of telling us what they’re doing. I also felt valued, like they really wanted to know what Seattle business owners are thinking.

SM: Had you been in the White House before?

MMN: I had been on a tour, but I’d never been to a meeting. It was all business though. We were hoping for a visit from the president, and I heard that he was in the building, but he didn’t make his way into our meeting.

SM: But now you can claim having been in the same building as the president! Any good meals in DC?

MMN: You know, the food in DC is terrible! But I did have a good dinner at an Italian restaurant called Posto.

SM: What’d you have at Posto?

MMN: The appetizer was a warm La Tur cheese with roasted peppers, scallions, and black olives. The entree was the fish special, a creamy, delicious potato and carrot gratin. For dessert, a blood orange panna cotta.

SM: Any good snacks at the meeting?

MMN: There were no snacks provided! Look at those government dollars at work.

Awards and Accolades

Molly Moon’s Ice Cream Named King County Executive Small Business of the Year

Dow Constantine’s office calls out the sweet treats chain for being tenacious, perspicacious, and audacious.

Email

Molly Moon’s wins small business award.

Photo: Molly Moon’s via Facebook

Molly Moon Neitzel, owner and founder of the Molly Moon’s ice cream empire (tag line: “Longer lines than a Cold War Era Russian Bakery!” Just kidding. About the tag line. The lines really are quite long), announced today via Twitter that her business was named King County Executive’s Small Business of the Year.

Neitzel’s competition in the category this year was Trophy Cupcake and Party (fantastic cupcakes, normal-size lines) and Lightel Technologies in Renton (nothing to do with food, probably no lines at all). Per Executive Dow Constantine’s website, the award is “given to the small business that best exemplifies the tenacity, perspicacity, and audacity it takes to successfully operate a small business.”

“But WTF does perspicacity mean?” You might ask. I’ll tell you. Perspicacity is defined as “an acuteness of perception, discernment, or understanding.”

The honor was announced this morning at a breakfast at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. KING 5’s John Curley covered the emcee duties, naturally enough. And there was a scheduled appearance by the Seahawks Blue Thunder Drumline—a bold choice for an event that began at the ungodly hour of 7:15am.
