Homegrown Nixes Late-Night Hours at Capitol Hill Store

Last chance to soak up some fun at the sandwich shop, chums.

No more of this at 2am: Homegrown on Capitol Hill ditches late-night hours. Photo courtesy the establishment.

UPDATE 1/7 at 3pm Of the change in hours, co-owner Ben Friedman says: “It’s mainly a location thing—when it’s this cold out, not as many people are down to walk as far for some steak frites and catfish hushpuppies…”

Bummer news, boozers. Homegrown on Capitol Hill is nixing Friday and Saturday late-night hours. This is the last weekend the Melrose Market shop will cater to night owls and stay open until 3am, but according to a Facebook post, the powers that be “might bring it back in the summertime.”

What gives? I’ve got a message in with co-owner Ben Friedman and will let you know when I hear back.

More importantly, does this spell the end of the deep-fried Bluffernutter?

Homegrown brings sustainable sammies to Queen Anne Ave.

Here’s news befitting of National Sandwich Day: The Queen Anne Homegrown is now open.

The third branch of the sustainable sandwich counter comes four months after co-owners Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis set up shop in the Melrose Market—home to the drunk muncher triple-dog-dare-you deep-fried Bluffernutter.

The Queen Anne outpost is open daily 8am-4pm, with dinner hours slated for the coming weeks.

Which nabe is next, guys?

Homegrown’s Halloween Costume Contest

You’ll have to get creative, because we guarantee you don’t have this costume lying around your basement.

What would you do for this sandwich?

We know how much you love Homegrown, that land of all-natural, insanely tasty sandwiches served in sustainable packaging in two locations—-Melrose Market and Fremont—-with another opening next month on Queen Anne.

Well do you love it this much? Because the Homegrown gents just wrote to inform us that on Halloween this Sunday, anyone who comes into Homegrown dressed as the Earl of Sandwich or the Count of Monte Cristo gets his/her sandwich free and is entered into their Earl of the Year contest.

And what is the Earl of the Year contest, you ask? It’s the contest that awards the most creative and most unique costumes with homegrown gift cards and free tee-shirts and totes.

We are talking powdered wigs and coats that have tails, people. On the other hand…we are talking spicy jalapeno meatloaf sandwiches made with organic chuck, whole milk cheddar, Zoe’s bacon, horseradish Dijon, hazelnut Romesco, and mixed greens on whole-grain. Man we love this joint.

Where’s that powdered wig again?

A Homegrown employee works behind the register, situated on top of a grow box filled with plants and herbs, from chives and basil to turnips.

If ever Seattle was missing a mid-day meal destination for the sustainable-minded, childhood friends Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis have heeded that call with Homegrown, a new-ish sandwich joint inconspicuously located on Fremont Avenue.

Friedman and Gillis’s goal is to make every aspect of Homegrown’s operations eco-friendly—they don’t use bottled water, all products are 100 percent compostable and recyclable, and ingredients are organic, local, and/or sustainable (check the massive chalkboard to see which sourcers fall under what category). All this while creating a truly gourmet (albeit affordable) product.

Choose from over a dozen different options; half sandwiches range from $5-$6.50, and whole ones will run you no more than $12. I highly suggest ordering the immaculate creations on Boulangerie Nantaise or Essential Baking Company breads, but if you’re cutting out the carbs (is that still an in thing?), you can also opt for a handful of salads for a similar price. And beginning Oct. 12, the sandwich shop will offer breakfast, too. Check out the offerings here.

With a $10 bill, I ordered the turkey, bacon, and avocado sandwich on country bread, with a side of the South Carolina slaw. Though the portions were less than impressive, the taste and quality of my artfully crafted meal won me over. Read: I’ll be back.

What’s the must-try item?
[Friedman] “Our must-have pick is the flank steak or the turkey bacon avocado; those are my two faves, and they’re both pretty meaty sandwiches. The flank steak comes with sliced Portobello mushrooms and South American-style chimichurri, and the turkey comes with a homemade aioli and melted Gouda, so it’s nice and garlicy. If I had to call it, those are both the house favorites.”

Morning Memo

Plum and Homegrown Serving Breakfast

Email

Two beloved new Seattle hotspots; two joints starting breakfast service. Who knew life before noon could be so fulfilling.

At Homegrown in Fremont the deal is breakfast sandwiches, from pastrami-hash with a fried egg to a turkey, bacon, toad-in-the-hole breakfast club. Homemade granola, fresh-squeezed juices, and the almighty Stumptown Coffee will round out the offerings at this sustainable sandwich shop.

Because after all, says co-owner Ben Friedman, “breakfast is the next frontier of sandwich environmentalism.” Look for it all to begin October 12, from 8am to 11am.

This weekend, Plum, the new global vegan sensation on Capitol Hill, launched its weekend brunch service with Latin-inspired dishes like Panamanian-style polenta with chili gravy and apple quinoa with Brazilian feijoada. And Bloody Marys and Mojitos.

Weekday breakfasts featuring vegan pastries and its signature crepes and—get this—a bottomless Stumptown latte with any entree purchase come with a heapin’ helping of free wi-fi.

Breakfast at Plum is Monday through Friday 8am to 11am; weekend brunch Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm.
