No more white linens at 86 Pine Street: After an eight month renovation, the space that housed Campagne for more than two decades officially has morphed into Marché, a more relaxed reboot of the French institution. After all, casual is très trendy.

Elegant accoutrements have made way for handsome woods, a communal table, and snazzies like vintage filament bulbs and loungey booths. The shiny, well-stocked bar is even pimped out with an Enomatic wine-dispensing system.

Chef-owner Daisley Gorden will look to his Pike Place environs for sourcing (marché means market) to prepare bistro dishes like curried mussels, house-made chicken and mushroom sausage, or mackerel. Joining Gordon, whose Cafe Campagne remains open and unchanged, is general manager Cameron Williams and former Rover’s sommelier Cyril Frechier. He promises plenty of wines by the glass.

Marché is currently in the soft-open stage, with an official debut slated for Friday, October 7 starting at 4:30. Can’t make it? Get a look at the revamped cafe and a sampling of the food in our slideshow.

Luc Launches Sunday Brunch

Look for French-American cafe food starting in November.

In keeping with one of Seattle’s 12 hottest restaurant trends, an exemplar of another one of Seattle’s 12 hottest restaurant trends starts brunch service next month.

Sunday, November 7, Luc kicks off its French-American cafe brunches, with items like brioche French toast, poached eggs with ham and harissa hollandaise, and classic crepes and omelettes.

Look for the menu to hit Luc’s website November 1. Brunch hours will be 10am to 2pm.

What Gaul! Paris Grocery Opens Quietly on the Pike Hill Climb

From the good people who brought us The Spanish Table, Paris Grocery (1418 Western Ave), a new little grocery with a French mood, has moved in next door to the Iberian emporium on the Pike Hill Climb. No frills signage announces the name of the store offhandedly, as if the owners are confident that word of mouth gushing will suffice.

And we know it will: there are Macrina baked goods, lovely French picnic wines under $30, and most importantly—for us, anyway—there is cheese. French cheese. Basque sheep’s milk cheeses like Le Bleu and Kaikou, and the delicately textured Tome Corse de Chevre, a goat cheese from Corsica. Like the Spanish Table, Paris Grocery also stocks items you thought you could only get in Europe: saffron fettuccine, Badoit sparkling water, and 10 cent coffee candies. Bon appétit and so forth.

Happy Bastille Day!

The fried chicken and apple pie have been devoured; the star-spangled cocktail napkins have been stowed; the Bud bottles have been recycled.

But don’t fret: it turns out French independence is even tastier. Bastille Day is today, you know. Here’s where to celebrate.

Rover’s and Le Gourmand present seven- and five-course dinners, respectively, each with the option of paired wines.

Le Pichet kicks it into party mode with Parisian street food available at 6pm, live jazz at 8, and a DJ at 11pm.

Voila! Bistrot has recently opened a patio for summer dining, which is so a la mode, they don’t even need a Bastille Day special.

Café Campagne offers the crème de la crème of all Bastille Day celebrations, with a street party in Post Alley from 3 to 10pm (admission is free! Yeehaw!), where you can enjoy wine, beer and street food starting at $5 while you feast your eyes on burlesque and Cancan performances. Ooh la la.

Duck inside the cafe’s more sophisticated older sister, Campagne for its “Storming The Palace Larder Dinner,” where they’ll serve a 5-course feast from 5pm to 10pm for $75.

Finally…need we even mention Bastille, the new French bistro that’s taking the Rue de la Ballard Avenue by storm?

We didn’t think so.

Bastille Opens Today…

…and it’s a little slice of Paris in Ballard

Can’t remember last time a Seattle restaurant was as breathlessly awaited as Bastille, the big new Ballard brasserie from James Weimann (Pesos, May Thai, El Camino, Triangle Tavern, Talarico’s Pizza) and Deming Maclise (Caffe Fiore), with Shannon Galusha (Veil) in the kitchen and Peter Lewis (founder of Campagne) mastermind of the front of the house.

It opens tonight. Bistro faves (steak frites, Croque Monsieur, poulet roti, French onion soup, etc.) dominate the menu; falafel and suchlike the Ballard Ave takeout window; nibbles and aperitifs aplenty the breezy patio; late-night eats (til 1am nightly) the intimate Back Bar.

Mostly, the place is a looker. Salvaged Parisian appointments set a Musee d’Orsay tone, from the Paris metro tiles to the vintage light fixtures, some from French churches. Other stuff was reclaimed from our back yard, like the 3,000-piece chandelier from an old Ballard mansion.

And check the 45-foot zinc bar. Yeah. Forty-five feet. And the 2,500-square-foot rooftop garden, whose 12 raised beds will produce much of the menu’s greenery.

The size and vision of this joint are what sets it apart in these lean times. There is nothing small about the scope of Bastille.

The place, including bars and patio, will seat some 200 comers.
