The Best Part of Waking Up

Weekday Breakfast

It’s showing up on more and more menus.

Apparently boring.

Seattle is home to a silly number of brunch spots—some nailing it, some not. But we’ve already covered that, so here’s something new to consider: What’s up with weekday breakfast? More and more we’re seeing it pop up—hello!—on menus.

Witness the new AM offerings from Café Campagne. On June 1 the Market bistro rolls out Monday-Friday, 8am-11am breakfast. Lest you think the French only do petit déjeuner, selections include a chevre-and-escarole omelette, poached eggs, and chicken and pork sausage.

Once the newly minted Sitka and Spruce gets a few weeks under its belt, it, too, will open up 8am-11am on weekdays. The menu is still under wraps, but it will no doubt be delicious and fresh and seasonal, because that’s how Matthew Dillon rolls.

Now, back to the what’s up with question. I love love love brunch on the weekends. It’s an excuse to rehash last night with friends and a treat for making it through another five mornings of tepid english muffins. If weekday breakfast becomes more of an occasion, does that mean brunch will lose its appeal? Does a bagel and cream cheese not cut it anymore?

When you go to a Mariners game, you pig out on the garlic fries. But when you go to a Sounders game, what do you eat? Top Pot Doughnuts, for one.

Today the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders FC announced a three-year partnership with the local company. According to a release, Top Pot will set up eight locations—coffee carts, kiosks, and concession stands—throughout Qwest.

Wonder if the notoriously not-food-focused Hardcore Fans can resist this temptation.

Food Find for Five Dollars

Bluebird now serves light breakfast fare.

Sandwich

I have two priorities in the morning: to get clean and to get caffeinated. Breakfast often falls to the wayside, partly because I’m usually haulin’ it anyways and unless I’m downtown it’s not easy finding grub to go.

So it was with delight this Tuesday that I stumbled upon a fuzzy-eyed employee opening Bluebird at 8am. Turns out the ice cream parlor started serving light morning fare, such as the breakfast sandwich pictured to the left. It’s made by Seattle’s Domovoi Happy Foods and consists of organic free-range eggs, sharp cheddar cheese, chipotle mayo, and you can choose between a bacon or tomato topping. We’re not talking anything totally gosh-wow—it’s $3.50, mind you—but, when you’re in a rush, it certainly does the job.

Where do you get your breakfast on the go?

Plum and Homegrown Serving Breakfast

Email

Two beloved new Seattle hotspots; two joints starting breakfast service. Who knew life before noon could be so fulfilling.

At Homegrown in Fremont the deal is breakfast sandwiches, from pastrami-hash with a fried egg to a turkey, bacon, toad-in-the-hole breakfast club. Homemade granola, fresh-squeezed juices, and the almighty Stumptown Coffee will round out the offerings at this sustainable sandwich shop.

Because after all, says co-owner Ben Friedman, “breakfast is the next frontier of sandwich environmentalism.” Look for it all to begin October 12, from 8am to 11am.

This weekend, Plum, the new global vegan sensation on Capitol Hill, launched its weekend brunch service with Latin-inspired dishes like Panamanian-style polenta with chili gravy and apple quinoa with Brazilian feijoada. And Bloody Marys and Mojitos.

Weekday breakfasts featuring vegan pastries and its signature crepes and—get this—a bottomless Stumptown latte with any entree purchase come with a heapin’ helping of free wi-fi.

Breakfast at Plum is Monday through Friday 8am to 11am; weekend brunch Saturday and Sunday 10am to 5pm.
