CAPITOL HILL
Eater Seattle shared the good news that the Thai Curry Simple walk-up window has extended its hours. It’s now open Monday to Friday 11 to 8, Saturday 11 to 5.

Tavern Law will be showcasing the wares of nearby distillery Oola tonight, March 28, from 7 to 10 with a special Oola-centric happy hour. On the menu: $7 bee’s knees and Moscow mules.

Lucky 8s is launching a lunch special: patrons choose one item from each of three categories (fortune, luck, and happiness—aka starter, entrée, and side) for $8, available to dine in or take out.

Yikes: Terra Plata got burgled this weekend. Capitol Hill Seattle blog reports that more than $3,000 in tools and construction equipment was swiped from the rooftop deck.

Poquitos is putting on a fundraiser this coming Monday, April 2, for the families of three skiers, Jim Jack, Chris Rudolph. and John Brenan, who were lost in a recent avalanche. The event begins at 4, and chef Manny Arce will be roasting two whole pigs and offering $2 tacos on the patio—ski attire is suggested.

DOWNTOWN
The Icon Grill has a new facade but a historically inaccurate quote. And Hanna Raskin has something (amusing) to say about it.

GREENWOOD
King 5 reports that last weekend a grease fire erupted at Rickshaw, interrupting a night of karaoke. No one was hurt.

QUEEN ANNE
Canlis is presenting the 2009 vintage of its Peter Canlis Syrah from Buty Winery to the wine-drinking world. On Friday, March 30, the Canlis crew is having a five-course celebration of good wine and good food in the restaurant’s penthouse.

SOUTH LAKE UNION
Just a reminder that breakfast at Brave Horse starts today, March 28. Finally, those pretzel breakfast sandwiches

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS
The hi-hat cupcake is coming back to Trophy Cupcakes next weekend. The chocolate-dipped, marshmallow-topped cupcakes are almost as elusive as the Easter bunny—they’ll surface for just two days on April 7 and 8. (Also, Hunger Games cupcakes through Sunday, April 1.)

An article on Sightline Daily kicked off a discussion of Seattle’s supposedly tragic food cart scene. We’ve got some catching up to do with our neighbors to the south for sure, but we don’t think it’s so bad up here, especially not with bellies full of crepes and beignets

On the Menu

A Corn Dog Cameo at Brave Horse Tavern

The summertime favorite returns for one day only March 16.

Tomorrow only: battered dogs on sticks. Photo via Brave Horse Tavern

It started with a note that a diner wrote to Brave Horse Tavern chef Brian Walczyk.

She started by lamenting the closing of Danny’s Wonder Freeze, “the creme de la creme of corn dogs and egg creams.” And oh, by the way, National Corn Dog Day is March 17, and this particular individual and her colleagues take food-related holidays quite seriously.

These batter-crusted sausages had themselves a moment last summer; Brave Horse Tavern and several other establishments around town served up some tasty upgraded versions of the carnival classic. But seasons change and so do menus. Is there a chance, the diner pleaded, that the beery South Lake Union gastropub could bring back its corn dog, even just for a day?

Walczyk is apparently an obliging guy. And so, for one glorious day on March 16, corn dogs return to the menu at Brave Horse Tavern—the 17th is reserved for St. Patrick’s Day revelry. Get these dogs from 11am till close. And please don’t take advantage of the chef’s good nature by bombarding him with requests about National Zucchini Day (August 8), National Lobster Day (June 15), or National Yorkshire Pudding Day (October 13). National Soft Pretzel Month, which happens in April, is presumably fair game.

Neighborhood Food News: Meatless Mondays, mini MODs, and a West Seattle beer-naming contest

Plus: Mondays are on at Dinette, a Girl Scout cookie locator, and more.

Dinettetoast

Dinette (home of many tasty takes on toast) is now open Mondays.

CAPITOL HILL
Skelly and the Bean’s unique chef incubator project began this week. Every Monday in March, Sarah Wong, instructor, chef, and member of the Butcher’s Guild, will be doing a meatless Monday menu, served up with a side of irony.

Eater Seattle reports that Dinette is now open Mondays. This means fancy toast is now available six days a week.

SODO
Ales from local brewery Two Beers will be available next week at CenturyLink Field. Starting March 17, some of the SoDo brewery’s most popular creations will be on tap during Seahawks and Sounders games.

SOUTH LAKE UNION
Tom Douglas’ Brave Horse Tavern will serve breakfast from 8 to 11 on weekdays, starting March 28. More importantly: Breakfast includes pretzel breakfast sandwiches.

WEST SEATTLE
Big Al Brewing is just about to launch a third ‘hood-exclusive charity beer, and the organizers are leaving the naming up to you, says West Seattle Blog. (Maybe they are hoping to avoid another double entendre …) Whoever comes up with the winning name gets to choose a charity to receive a portion of the beer’s proceeds, as well as a stack of gift certificates from a variety of bars, and eternal fame.

WOODINVILLE
Four intriguing meals are coming up at the Herbfarm: first Super Cattle, starting March 9, a meaty meal exalting Washington and Oregon–raised Wagyu. After that; Chambers of the Sea, Spring Forager’s Dinner, and Salmon Nation.

MULTIPLE LOCATIONS
The Beard and Stache Fest will be bouncing around town all month, from bingo at Calamity Jane’s to a Skee Ball tournament at King’s Hardware.

MOD Pizza has just launched the Mini MOD, a pizza sized for kids (or not-so-hungry grown-ups) that costs just $3.88. The little pie will be available at four of the five locations: Alderwood, Bellevue, Capitol Hill, and the U District.

For those of you regretting not buying an entire case of Thin Mints, never fear. There’s an online cookie locator. Find cookies in your ‘hood (or just find a new cookie spot, so they don’t see you coming back for yet another case of Samoas).

Morning Matters

Brave Horse Tavern Adds Breakfast

And by “breakfast” I mean “pretzel breakfast sandwiches.”

Brave Horse Tavern, that beery bastion of delicious pretzels and tipsy, shuffleboarding Amazonians, is launching breakfast service on March 28. Weekday breakfast will run from 8-11, while the hearty weekend brunch at the Tom Douglas gastropub (cheffed by Brian Walczyk) remains the same. In fact, you can read about it in this month’s issue.

So, breakfast. That’s cool. But wait—I totally buried the lede on this one. The new morning menu will include breakfast sandwiches made with Brave Horse’s signature insanely good pretzels. Yes, people: pretzel breakfast sandwiches. One such sandwich planned for the menu will include egg, house-cured ham, and white cheddar. I’m not exactly sure how the sandwich filling manages to stay within the twisty confines of the pretzel, but I’m certainly willing to find out.

Some of the brunch favorites, like the Brave Horse Breakfast, will be on the menu too, as well as a bread pudding French toast, pastrami hash, and—in case you prefer your food comas in the evening hours—healthier fare like the Horse Food, made with quinoa and granola from nearby Dahlia Workshop.

The pretzel sandwiches will be on the breakfast menu only, not brunch. If you’re feeling ambitious, you could arrange a Douglas-centric breakfast sandwich crawl that starts here, moves on to the recently rechristened breakfast sandwich haven Serious Biscuit, then over to Dahlia Bakery.

Neighborhood Food News: Fire at Amore Infused, Big Mario’s Goes Dark for SOPA

Plus: Where to eat and drink in the snow, and burgers get creative at Brave Horse Tavern.

Amoreinfused

Amore Infused owner Sean Langan took to Facebook to share images of his fire-ravaged restaurant with fans and regulars.

BELLTOWN
Eater Seattle says that the fire that broke out January 15 at Italian food and cocktail spot Amore Infused was caused by an electrical outlet. The blaze caused an estimated $300,000 of damage, and left owner Sean Langan without a kitchen in which to prepare for his five upcoming catering jobs. Langan isn’t sure how long his restaurant will remain closed for repairs and remodeling, but still plans to participate in FareStart’s guest chef night on January 26.

CAPITOL HILL
If it’s good enough for Google and Wikipedia, it’s good enough for Big Mario’s. The pizza shop that delivered hot pies to Occupy Seattle protesters this past fall has temporarily shut down its website in support of today’s protests of the federal House and Senate’s Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act.

SOUTH LAKE UNION
Tom Douglas’s gastropub Brave Horse Tavern has been calling for burger of the week submissions from patrons, and Seattle Weekly‘s Hanna Raskin reports on some of the more memorable concoctions. The entries have ranged from latke-topped burgers to peanut-butter heavy Elvis burgers. This week’s winner: Jalapeno Heater, a bacon and chuck patty topped with jalapeno poppers, Calabrian aioli, and red cabbage slaw.

EVERYWHERE
In case you haven’t seen Twitter, Facebook, the actual news, or the actual outdoors, it’s snowing today. Some bars and restaurants have called in a snow day (as have most food trucks) but plenty of places are open and catering to the hungry, thirsty, and snowbound.
