Tacos Chukis: “high quality and cooked fresh.”

Seattleites are quick to bemoan the state of Mexican food in this city, but they seem to have found a reliably authentic spot in Tacos Chukís. The newish restaurant is located in the 219 Broadway building that houses a handful of other ethnic eateries: Hana, Guanaco’s Tacos Pupuseria, Kimchi Bistro.

At Chukís (a Tijuana colloquialism for “good” or "cool") Roberto, “Beto,” Salmerón and Virgilio, “Gilo,” Hernández fry up corn tortillas then fill ’em with adobada pork and pineapple and nopales, grilled prickly pear cactus leaves. At $1.60 the eats are cheap but the ingredients are still “high quality and cooked fresh,” wrote Joseph Gustav in a recent Seattle Met article.

Also noteworthy is how this little joint came to be. It’s a compelling story—it involves Salmerón biking 1,600 miles to his Mexican hometown, impressive even by cycle-psycho Seattle standards—and the reason Gustav wrote that article. You really should read it.

So many hummus platters, so few of them delicious. At bars across the land, the hummus plate is a token, a throwaway, an obligatory nod to the vegans and the dieters.

But this is not the case at Hopvine, which changes up its hummus seasonally—on day you may find it’s made of white beans, another time: pinto. Some days, it’s just good old fashioned chickpeas and garlic, with a little paprika on top for color and flavor pizzazz.

The other stuff on the platter changes too. There may be almonds, or roasted red peppers, or cucumbers, or sunflower seeds, or olives, or red onions. Pita is the only consistent player in this production.

So there you have it, the Hopvine hummus platter. Tastes good, always surprising, won’t make you fat. Enjoy.

This coming Wednesday is one of those days in which we pay tribute to a totally random food: the S’more. Been awhile since you had one? Here’s where to dig in.

Autumn Martin of Hot Cakes Confections is whipping up cookies inspired by the campfire classic and selling them at the Columbia City Farmers Market from 3–7. (If you can’t make it then, Martin will have the treats at the Wallingford, Bellevue, West Seattle, and Lake Forest Park markets, too.) The cookies are made with hand-smoked chocolate. Martin grew up smoking foods and was formerly head chocolatier at Theo—expect deliciousness.

Blue Moon Burgers is touting a milkshake mixed with Theo Chocolate ganache, in-house marshmallow crème, and graham crackers, crumbles of which sweeten the top. Have at it through the end of the month.

The toasted-just-so mallow pictured here is courtesy Tom Douglas. A trio of his eateries—Dahlia Bakery, Dahlia Workshop, and Rub With Love Shack —are offering the graham guys for $3 from 11–4. Because half the fun of S’mores is roasting the marshy, Douglas promises a fire at each of the spots.

Eat this now: a chocolate chip cookie made by DeLaurenti.

DeLaurenti did not take take top honors in Nosh Pit’s recent chocolate chip cookie taste test (those went to Volunteer Park Cafe), but hands down D’s submissions boasted the best chocolate of the bunch. Dark but not too bitter and almost creamy in texture, we clearly were dealing with some high quality stuff. And while the slightly crisped dough was really very nice, it was this ingredient that helped the cookie to rank as third favorite of the 20 tasters.

Also appreciated was the fact that this high-quality chocolate—and there was a lot of it—was evenly distributed. You’d be amazed at how many bakeries fail to realize the importance of that.

One of the cookies costs $2.19.

Luc’s magical potatoes. And also the hat. Because of the whole Chef in the Hat thing.

People say that pizza is like riding a bicycle.

No wait, people say that pizza is like sex, even when it’s bad it’s not that bad. And sex is like riding a bicycle because…I think because you don’t forget how to do it? Wait, I got it: Everything that you don’t forget how to do even if you haven’t done it in a while is like riding a bicycle. That’s how that one goes. Who brought up sex anyway? Pervert.

Nevermind all that. In real life, it’s fried potatoes that are like riding a bicycle. That is to say, more fun than what you are doing right now.

Especially if they are Luc’s fried potatoes, or souffle potato crisps as they are referred to in the restaurant’s vernacular. The potatoes are blanched, cooled, and fried three times.

A basket costs $9 and comes with the house aioli.

More good news: Luc now has keg wine.

Even more good news: it’s almost evening snack o’clock.

Among the many yummers gracing the menu at Monsoon are these crispy imperial rolls. They’re stuffed with a mix of kurobuta pork and shrimp—plus a dash of carrot, yellow onion, and taro root—and served with a side of kicky nuoc cham sauce.

To achieve the inimitable skin blanketing those ingredients, toques steep the rice paper in beer. Beer! Then the roll is deep fried. Talk about a winning combo.

A plateful is priced at $8.50 but if you’d rather try your hand making them at home, by all means do.

You, too, will love this treat from Frost Doughnuts.

Today’s snack: Caramelly fried cake from Frost Doughnuts.

Have you ever known a food less polarizing than the doughnut? I mean, who doesn’t like doughnuts? They’re fried dough, for crying out, often excessively coated in sugar and/or frosting.

Seattle Met is particularly fond of this doughnut here. It’s a salted caramel variety from Mill Creek bakery Frost Doughnuts (which will soon open two new shops, possibly both in Seattle proper). When Nosh Pit piggies ate their way through 17 kinds of rings from rollers all over town, the salty-sweet combination garnered this confection runaway praise.

Are you groaning and eye-rolling at the mention of another salted caramel something something? Justifiable, the flavor is beyond overexposed, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious.

You’re still the one, Mr. D’s baklava.

Today’s snack: A small baklava ($2.50) from Mr. D’s Greek Delicacies.

As food trucks around town were going brick and mortar, Mr. D’s, a gyro stand in the Pike Place market, did the opposite. While its permanent digs receive a seismic make-over, the lunchtime destination has been temporarily moved to a trailer painted a garish shade of red and parked just across the sidewalk from its normal location in the market.

That means that there has been, and will be, no interruption in your access to the city’s best baklava, made on the spot by a very friendly Greek lady of advanced age. A classic version of the layered treat made from filo dough, chopped nuts, and honey, Mr. D’s ’va is sweet but not too sweet, perfectly flaky, and fresh as the morning dew, even when made in a tiny truck surrounded by chaos and construction dust.

Today’s snack: shrimp pancake from Green Leaf.

The menu at the ID sliver (one of the city’s best Vietnamese restaurants, mind you) is crazy long, rife with banh xeo, vermicelli bowls, and phơ. So in the interest of negating what-the-hell-do-I-order anxiety, just go with a pancake (one is quite filling). Made with rice flour and pleasantly fluffy, the cakes are almost crepe-like, flipped as if an omelet, and slightly sweet in finish. Dress one up with an accompanying jungle load of basil, mint, and greens; finish with a healthy dousing of earthy fish sauce; then relish in a decision-free meal.

Today’s snack: Some very tasty toast at Dinette.

Even if the words “chicken liver mousse” aren’t near and dear to your heart, try the chicken liver mousse toast at Dinette on Capitol Hill. it’s creamy and crunchy, savory yet light.

Toasts—grilled bread topped with delicious things—are a house specialty at this sweet Capitol Hill cafe. There are seven different kinds on the dinner menu, ranging in price from $5 to $7. A happy hour menu (available from 5 to 6:30pm) must-try: the egg salad and marinated anchovy crostini. Extraordinary, and only $6. (The chicken liver toast also appears on the HH menu, it’s also $6, $7 at dinnertime).
