Seattle’s Best Soups?
We’re in the thick of soup season, and we all want to know where the good ones are.
Is everyone else as obsessed with soup as I am these days?
I’ve written about some of my favorite Downtown Seattle soups here before—though lately I’ve been digging into a lot of pho as well as sundubu—Korean soft-tofu stew. We keep pimping this recipe for French onion soup at now-defunct Artisanal, because it’s ultra-wonderful.
Other places that have fantastic French onion soup: Place Pigalle, Toulouse Petit, and Le Pichet.
But thanks to a bunch of Seattle soup suggestions posted on The Stranger’s Questionland site, I have some new places to check out. I’ve never ordered soup at Joule, for instance, or Sambar.
While we’re at it, might I suggest, once more, the sopa azteca at El Mestizo? So darn delicious.

So where does one get this lovely soondubu? I’m always on the lookout for good Korean food.
Andrea; I like Korean Tofu House in the U-District and BCD outside H-mart.

The Spicy Beef soup at Joule is heavenly. Chunks of beef with leeks and daikon in a steaming, lucsious broth, topped with creme fraiche and scallions. Order this with warm bread and home made butter and you will be very happy – especially on a cold, wet, Seattle day!
The other night I had the French onion soup at Cafe Presse and it was super. Huge bowlful, too.
Not that exotic, but Sound Soups is always really good.
Voila! Bistrot has a good onion soup as well, and it’s a reasonably-sized goblet, so you don’t have to have it as your meal.
The French Onion Soup at 611 Supreme is a crock of cheesy, tangy goodness.
Also agree that the sopa azteca at El Mestizo is amazing!
The French onion soup at Maximilien in the Market is the best I’ve had on this continent…
The Market Grill in Pike’s Place makes the absolute best clam chowder – I go there for lunch every day I am in Seattle on a visit from San Francisco.
SAVOUR in Ballard, mmmm! Different everyday & soooo good! Parsnip & Pear, Cauliflower/Sunchoke & Tomato Basil have been my faves!
